I thought I would attempt a Trip Report on my recent solo.  Not that anyone will be impressed, but more of a "What Not To Do" guide to other novices.

Can I reasonably assume the report itself is just a series of back to back posts, with the appropriate photo(s) attached to each one?

Can I also assume all photos must reside on a separate photo hosting website? 

If So, which one is the simplest to use for the simplest of people, like myself?

As a fellow tech neanderthal, I can only speak to PhotoBucket my choice for a FREE hosting site.
  Go join and follow the SIMPLE instructions to BULK upload your pics.

  You need to have your trip pics in a file on your computer. When you try to bulk upload them, it will ask you to go to that file on your computer.

If you don't have them in a file PROPERLY the bulk upload won't SHOW that you have pics to upload.

Once you get them uploaded you can NAME the album and go thru and add descriptions to each pic IF you want.

  As you write your trip report, I do mine in Windows Office off-line then COPY/PASTE into the report. You WANT to have your PB account open.

You want to put a pic in, you look to the right side of pic you highlight and you'll see numerous options. HOVER over them and you can either COPY the link OR copy the image to trip report.

I save ALL my trip reports and PASTE the copy to QJ.
Before you POST it, open the PREVIEW.
IF you want the IMAGE to show in the report and it DOESN'T then you can go back to PB and try again because you COPIED the wrong thing.

A little trial and error and you'll have it down pat.
OR ask ANY kid and they'll do it for you.  ;) ;D ;D

I can't speak from personal experience but I believe Photobucket stopped third party hosting - what I believe solotripper describes - for free accounts. Hopefully you can check a report that used Photobucket free and see if it's working. I see a lot of images not available.

I don't want to downplay that there maybe changes to the PB policy on 3rd party hosting, but I got it too work but ONLY on the thumbnail page.

I went to my album, clicked on it and up comes the thumbnails. Under the thumbnail, there are boxes with the different image codes in them.

I clicked on the one that says IMG, it turned blue for me and then right clicked for my options.

I chose COPY and then went to the QJ reply box and pasted in the IMG code. It shows as JUST code in the reply box so don't let that throw you.

I always hit PREVIEW before posting to make sure things look the way I want them too.

In the PREVIEW, the IMAGE will show FULL size.
If it's what you want, then just post as usual.

TomT, I have no clue why you would LOSE your trip pics/Avatar on PB? I could see them NOT allowing FREE 3rd party hosting, but the purpose of having FREE accounts is to get you to PAY for other services.

Could it be you exceeded the LIMIT for free storage?


If you go to Solotripper which are public albums, you'll see at least a dozen or so albums. As far as I know NONE of the pics have been deleled, at least not the last time I checked?

Have your tried sending E-mail to Customer Service and see what they have to say?
I'm going to do some checking myself to see IF there is something going on?

Hmmmm, I guess there IS no more FREE 3rd party hosting on PB.
PB says it took the action because people were storing so many FREE pics but were abusing the system by using them for profit ( I guess) that they changed their policies?

I don't know HOW it worked for me? MAYBE I just stumbled across work around like a blind squirrel after a nut. ;) ;D ;D ;D

Maybe some other QJ members that use FREE Photobucket could try what I did and see if it works for them?

Just for the helluva it, why don't you see IF you can copy the IMG code under one of your thumbnail pics and paste into a reply like I did?

I appreciate everyone trying to sort this out, but from my vantage point I would guess I have a snowball's chance in hell of ever doing any of this successfully.  I Googled some of the terms being tossed about and as close as I got was references to a 2009 animated movie featuring critters that resemble my first girlfriend.

There is no right or wrong way to post a trip report. They are as varied as the folks on this board. Just tell us whatever you want to about your trip. 8-)

Nope!  They're on to me.  I need $400 a year to be able to share 3rd party hosting.

I have been able to put photos up, connected to my posts, without using a service like Photobucket.  Use "insert" on the top bar of icons.  Then go to choose file and go to the file (or photo) on your computer to choose picture.  It will have to be under 250KB to be accepted by QJ so you may have to resize the photo.  To make it easier I put the desired photos in a file I name QJ photos on my desktop and resize and save the "ready" copy there to include in my post.

Guy on left is Kawishiway and other unknown is brother or brother-in-law of Magic's (?) I think.  I believe this was 2005 Bushwacker's/Jimboree.

I believe I met Stumpy once but not long enough to get a read. There was only one group that did an actual Jamboree as I recall and it's what they liked to do anyway. I don't remember their names offhand but they had pictures I kinda remember.

2010 was a Bushwackers Jamboree that several of us made it to, including Stumpy.  The only BwJ I managed to actually get to the "no-name" lake.  It was an adventure but at 67 (now) I have had enough of bushwacking. :)

Not that it matters, was there a bushwhacking Rendezvous in 2015? If so, where? Who came? Will there be one in 2020? Where? Is Stumpy still doing these? 8-)

It looks to me like since you’re the only one who made it, you choose the next one in 2020. The trip you did with KF would be quite challenging or perhaps you have something else up your sleeve... 8-)

Your previous suggestion of finding a 10 year old kid to help me was a good one, but sadly she told me I was too ignorant and there was nothing she could do other than pity me. Even her pity was brief as she went back to killing the batteries on her tablet.

After some trial and error a was able to reduce the image sizes below 250 using “Paint”, the entire time being sure there must be a simpler way.
I made the mistake of asking a friend who does IT work for a suggestion on a photo hosting website.  He suggested Imgur.com.  I successfully posted a test photo to QJ, but my image was surrounded with advertising, so I immediately deleted the image from Imgur.

db had kindly offered early on to post for me, but I declined as it seemed like cheating.  Citing my need to learn to fish, not just be given one.

Thanks for your reply.  I will try to decipher your BBCODE reference.  I appreciate the help, even if you are over 10 years old.

If you want to display images inline for a trip report, you can host them anywhere and just link to the image itself like solotripper did. It looks like this.

Code (html):

(You need to Login or Register   (You need to Login or Register The brackets enclose the opening and closing html tags so they do not show. Between the tags is the URL (location) of the image to be displayed.

The board will automatically resize the picture to fit and when clicked on will display it full size. Just play around till you get it. You won't break anything.

First let me say I appreciate everyone's help and encouragement.  Even those of you who only pretend to have as much difficulty as I do.

I was able to successfully post the one photo of the bow of my red canoe.

ST, I did use the same screen you posted the screenshot of using the BBCODE option you had mentioned previously.  db's comment about the board re-sizingimages automatically was also helpful as doing it manually in "Paint" was a pain. 

What I do not understand is your link "   (You need to Login or Register; When I first tried it all I got was "0 images " and nothing I could open.  Now the same link says it is "Solotripper Profile" but contains no information???  I am sure it is my persistent residual ignorance causing the problem.

So I will try to post a couple of photos along with some text and if that works well I will attempt a trip report before my aging memory jettisons too much more detail.
