Title: CCS Lean 3 owner question Post by Ranger on Jun 18th, 2018 at 4:36am
I own a CCS Lean 3+ shelter. I've only used it as my primary shelter on one trip a couple of years ago. Worked fine, but I seem to remember having trouble finding a suitable site to pitch it. For those that have more, and more recent, experience with their Lean 3: do you have issues finding a site to accommodate them, and/or does it often force you to move on to another site?
Appreciate any thoughts. I'm debating between the Lean 3, or a tent/tarp combo. But given that I am looking at a mid-August trip, the bug netting would be a huge plus. |

Ranger -
Yes, finding the "right" space CAN be an issue. There were times when I had to put the unit up over the tops of big rocks & bushes, etc.. You learn to get creative. I DID use it fairly often but, eventually, I sold it. I've thought about getting a smaller Lean shelter from CCS... maybe a 1, possibly a 2. Leans are about as lightweight a shelter option as you're going to find (no poles). Also, you can easily get 2 people & ALL of their gear in the Lean 3. Hopefully you have the right-sized ground sheet for the Lean, especially in June-July-August. Otherwise, if you're NOT camping on bare rock, you'll soon discover - as I did - that significant numbers of skeeters will emerge from the moss, etc., below to join you during your slumber. Bottom Line: My Lean 3 was simply overkill for my needs on most trips and, yes, it did pose challenges in finding the right space for set-up. Jimbo 8-) |

Whoa, that had not even crossed my mind! I've only used mine in September, during relatively bug free periods, with no ground cloth. I'm starting to "lean" away from the Lean 3 for an August solo. Not sure I want to invest in a Lean 1 right now, but I'll have to consider some options... maybe I should look into the hammock options, which I've never done before. |
