Title: Re: My pal Luna in Canoe and Kayak Magazine Post by intrepid_camper on Oct 9th, 2018 at 3:37pm
Fun to read about Luna as a travel partner. I have a tall, 60# Munsterlander (German Setter) BLUE who has been kayaking and camping with me for 3 summers in the BWCA and Quetico. He loves to go camping and relishes the comfort of the tent on bad weather days and when he wants to get away from the biting insects. We have the routine down pat and he never tips the kayak when getting in and out; good thing he is nimble. He loves to explore but also seldom strays far enough to lose sight of me. He returns to a sharp whistle if he is out of sight. On suitable shorelines he likes to run the shore, while I paddle along, and will keep it up until he reaches a difficult stretch of rocks, cliffs, or mud. This works great to keep him wearing off excess energy and staying calm in the kayak when paddling. People often meet and pet him when at portages and say they wish they could bring their dog. His company is great when solo camping and I do not know how I got along without a dog for so many years. I did have to get a bigger canoe to fit us and gear in. IC
