Simply put, "The River" by Peter Heller is one of the very best canoe adventure tales I've ever read.  See:   (You need to Login or Register .  Anything Heller writes is good but this is a thriller many QJer's will immediately relate to, especially those who have paddled the Far North.  While it is well-researched, only an experienced paddler could have written this.  It required someone who knows the setting and the rhythm of wilderness travel well.

I won't risk spoiling the tale by going very far into the weeds with this recommendation.  In short, "The River" is a "buddy tale" in which the two main characters - college friends seeking adventure in the North Woods - get far more than bargained for when they are thrust, suddenly, into exceptionally challenging yet realistic wilderness circumstances. The extreme situations they face demand immediate, life-or-death-type decisions.  These choices define their character and steer their fortunes (and those of others), for better or for worse. 

This story truly registered with me with respect to places I've paddled, people I've paddled with, situations I've come close to experiencing and choices I feared & hoped I would never have to make, ever. I believe many of you will relate to this story, too.  Emergencies are but a throw of the dice away at just about any time, up there.  I give this book my highest possible endorsement for all QJ readers and wilderness enthusiasts who enjoy a great adventure tale.  This won't disappoint.

Thanks Jimbo. I'm a couple chapters in and it reads great. The author sounds authentic about both the land and canoe tripping.
