Title: Paddler's Liars Club Post by mpeebles on Apr 3rd, 2019 at 12:28pm
I had a brain fart. How about we have a little fun telling lies/fibs, tall tales, call them what you want. Might be fun. I was inspired by the reports of mosquito swarms of biblical proportions in OPP as reported by Jimbo, dd, magic, etc. (not to mention the Burlington Liars Club). Doesn't have to be original and some of them may be old but that's OK.
I'll start with a mosquito one. Once while paddling in northern WI I saw two huge mosquitos hoovering over me. One said to the other, "should we eat him here or take him back into the marsh" to which the other one replied...."no let's eat him here, if we take him back in the marsh the big ones will get him". ;) |

Nah, and you can trust me on this: FACT is almost always stranger than fiction! Almost always. Still, I like mpeebles QJ challenge. Might be interesting to see what turns up.... Jimbo 8-) |

Back in '09 four of us headed into WCPP through the Lund Lake access. The portages had not been rerouted to higher ground yet. The rain of '08 kept on through '09. We almost lost Jim on the first one. Fortunately John saw his hat where he sank under the surface and spotted fingers of an uplifted hand in the nick of time. The pouring rain helped with the clean-up. After that close call life jackets were mandatory on every portage.
It was an odd group with most only familiar with one of the others. The plan was to find a new route to the Walleyes of Joey Lake. It soon became apparent that some had not read beyond "Walleye." The part about having to find our way there through various small lakes streams and swamps escaped attention. This became evident when I told them to take the day off on Indian House while I spent the day looking for a way through the next leg. Jaws dropped and murmurs of " you mean there are no portages" could be discerned. It had been so cold and wet that the Blackflies were still covering us and crawling in every opening. I kept mentioning Joey Lake and all the Walleye but the cold day we spent swatting and wading chest deep up a stream so twisty we had to pull the canoes across the corners increased the murmurs. They should have been happy the flood conditions had the stream near the top of the banks. It was a somber camp that night as the best we could find was rocky and black with insects. The murmurs now started mentioning "mutiny." |

Marten don’t leave us hanging. What did they do? Did they hang you or leave you in the swamp without a canoe?

We did a layover day in the Blackfly Camp, we had not noticed the flowing swamp on the back edge. Looking back I feel all our eyes may have been nearly swollen shut. My rest day was spent clearing an old trapper's trail so we could at least clamber over the fallen trees. A bottomless bog mid-way was passable until the brush I laid down was pushed thigh deep into the ooze. One more bushwhack after the trappers trail and we arrived on Joey Lake. Eight buggy and dreary days and not one Walleye was caught that afternoon. Every time I approached the group huddled out of the blowing wind and rain they fell silent. |

Mike once told me he saw Luna walk into the forest, dig a hole and do her business then cover it up. |

You could cut the tension with a knife and if tension was all they wanted to cut I would have slept better. One paddler had come from Virginia and one evening I made the mistake of mentioning the civil war. He sprang off his stump and with a finger jabbing at my face informed me it was some long name that had northern aggression in it. There were no Walleye to fillet so the amount of time this man spent honing his knife was very unsettling. Our camp spot was a good one at least. Tents were scattered about and mine was strategically located. I trimmed a narrow tunnel and then cleared a tent pad. The final touch was hanging a bear bell across the entry tunnel. Bears were not my concern! |

Funny stuff everyone!
On my first solo two years ago in WCPP I was paddling the large bay on the east side of what Marten calls Splitrock Lake and I refer to as Patrick Lake (just to confuse each other) along the west route from Irvine. Along the north side of that bay there is a sloping piece of exposed Canadian Shield about 150m long and 30m wide. On the bottom of the hill next to the shore are several large boulders arranged in a semi circle. On the top of the hill there are some larger boulders as well. I hiked to the top of the hill and was taking in the beauty of it all when all of a sudden the ground started shaking! I just stood there wondering what was going on when all of a sudden a crack opened up in the granite and some smoke came out which quickly turned into the form of the devil himself! He stood right in front of me and we looked each other in the eye for a minute or so, could've been longer. After a while he spoke...."why aren't you afraid of me like everyone else I encounter" to which I replied " why would I be afraid of you, I've been married to your sister for 42 years." He stood in silence for a moment or three, said he understood and went back to wherever he came from. Now I know why those rocks are there. |

Joey Lake, Walleyes and Marten's secret weapon
Wet conditions, another supper of Mac n cheese and general misery had everyone in their tents well before the unseen sun had set. This did pay off with rising early and noting our first view of the sky since the trip began. Fishing poles were leaning against a tree so I grabbed mine with its hot pink Dardevle hanging from a steel leader. I wanted the others to catch the fish so had not done any fishing the previous day. The Walleye struck as soon as I started to reel in. Our camp was on a rock slope that extended out into the water so the Walleye was pulled splashing out of the water and put on the stringer. All the splashing woke the others but three more casts had four Walleye on the stringer. I put my pole down since I only "fish to eat." Fancy fishing rigs went into action but no fish were caught. I had seen this happen too many times to be surprised. After an hour I decided I would fill my limit and cast the hot pink Dardevle out from where I sat sipping my coffee. As expected Walleye # 5 was added to the stringer. Ugly looks came my way but I tried to explain that the pre trip info included instructions on the fishing lure needed. |

Do I detect sarcasm or unbelief?? We laid an old tripping buddy to rest this winter so I can't have him back me up on the outcome of his unbelief in the use of hot pink Dardevles for Walleye. Long before the portages were cut into Irvine Lake by WCPP trail crews we would be dropped in by floatplane. Jim was one of the chosen few that year. Now Jim was a very dedicated fisherman. He came well prepared to fish, especially for monster pike. His 8 foot kayak for this was a concern but I digress. He had heard from others about the hot pink Dardevle I said was all I needed for a lure. On the drive up he showed me a bottle of hot pink nail polish and said if I actually caught a Walleye with my big pink slab he would paint his toenails to match. He did a nice job of it the next evening and it made for a good laugh. At the end of our stay we loaded the plane in a heavy rain and taxied out and waited out a bad thunderstorm. We took off but the route to Red Lake was blocked by the storm It was so bad there was no radio contact. The pilot gave up when fuel was going to be a problem and landed at Souborin Lodge where the sun was shining. We were all soaked and boots were muddy from loading the plane. We were invited inside for hot coffee anyway but did shed our muddy shoes and socks on a big deck occupied by numerous lodge guests. Jim became the object of fixed stares as he exposed those hot pink toenai!s. The guest all slid down the benches away from a questionable character dropped into their midst. |

I don't doubt the Pink Daredevil at all.
I didn't know they made them in that color but after reading your post, I went to the DD site and checked them out. I've caught walleyes on a Pink or Pink/White Slo-Poke jig casting from shore/canoe so I know they like that Pink color. What weight DD do you use? I'll probably swap out the treble for a single hook but am curious about the weight you prefer? |

I had to think hard as I have been banned from getting a fishing license in Canada and have not fished there in a long time, but your answer before explaining that. One ounce is the one I favored. The little ones never worked for me. I have heard of them being used for earrings but just do not believe the stories some tell. Feel free to use a single book but do not go to no hooks like I did and it cost me a lifetime ban north of the border.
The hot pink Dardevle took all the effort out of fishing but there was still the hassle of unhooking and stringing them. I always canoe trip with a bucket and use it for a lot of things. What I am going to describe takes a little practice to avoid the pike. I put the bucket with exactly two gallons of water six feet in front of me in the canoe. I dangle the hot pink Dardevle with all the hooks removed just above the water and let it clatter lightly against the canoe. Be ready because you need to be quick because in a few seconds a fish is flying out of the water and clamping down on the lure. Using the fishes momentum you guide it up and over the gunnel and into the bucket. A gentle tug is sometimes needed to free the hookless lure. The hard part is thinking fast enough to guide the pike out over the water and not into the bucket. All was fine until Claire paddled up one day. She came up with more infractions on that ticket than I knew existed. I found out that no hooks were far worse than keeping a tail hooked fish. |

Sometime's I skip rods and lures altogether. When the fish are jumping and the wind is blowing towards shore, I use this. Hardest part is getting the timing down and catching them at the peak of the jump. If I see a ranger I just tell them it's to keep the bears out of camp. ;) ;D ;D (You need to Login or Register |

Speaking of large northern pike and pink toenails......
I used to duck hunt quite a bit and one time was out in the marsh with my lab who was a very good retriever. I shot a mallard and it fell in an area just out of view. The dog went after the duck but didn't come back for quite a while. After whistling and whistling I could finally see the dog swimming towards me dragging what looked like a log. When the dog got to the blind I saw that the "log" was a 52" northern pike. I scolded the dog and told her to go back and get the duck. She just sat there and gave me a look like the one on the YouTube video with the helium guy. Anyway, I figured why not keep the northern as it would supply me with fish for about a year. When I cleaned the monster pike that evening I found the mallard in it's stomach. That dog was the about the third best one I ever had. Really Jim.......pink toenails? |

Anyway that northern had a hookless pink daredevil attached to a steel leader and about a foot of 80# test Fire Line firmly clenched in it's mouth . It also had an Underwater Canadian Passport with it. Never did figure out what that was all about. Anything you care to share about that Marten? |

I think your big pike is the one that capsized my canoe up in WCPP. I had a nice eating size Walleye in the bucket but was starving so dangled the hot pink Dardevle one more time over the water. A 19 inch Walleye came hurtling up and swallowed the lure. I was after a frying size fish so ushered the big female out over the water so it could cough up the hookless lure and be on its way. Imagine my fright when a 46 inch pike came up and tail walked until it had inhaled my Walleye head first. This was a few years ago and it must have grown fast to be so big when your dog retrieved it to get you the duck. The 80 pound test line saved me a lot of lost lures over the years but this time the choice backfired. The large pike hit the water and headed south. My canoe was pointed east and because the drag was stuck it was able to pull the canoe over. The force of its pull took me away from the canoe. The good news was I had on my tricked out survivors life vest. The bad news was that when I got yanked away from the canoe the heavy line tangled around my neck. I quickly pulled back on the line and was able get a wrap of it around my left hand. The fish accelerated so I thrust my legs forward to gain resistance. Wrong move! Next thing I know I am barefoot waterskiing and heading south. With the line cutting into my left hand I pulled the knife out of the sheath and cut the line. |

And now I know the rest of the story ;).
Now that the rightful owner has been established I'll be returning "The Lure" at next years Copia hoedown. Perhaps we should create a "Hookless Pink Daredevil Award" to be presented at next years Copia get together to the best untruth teller. As an added bonus we could have The League of Singing Impaired, or LOSI, serenade the award winner with a few camp songs for his or her, depending on toenail color, listening enjoyment. DD can be the LOSI director! |

Forgot to ask......where did you end up barefoot skiing?
I heard a story from some guys in Red Lake about seeing someone being dragged down the Chukuni River and over Nester Falls where they quickly lost sight of him. They thought he was yelling something to the effect of "can't cut the damn line" or something to that effect. Obviously, no one they told believed the story so they took to drinking and carrying on with women of ill repute. At least they found happiness. |

First I need to confess that the story is not entirely truthful. I was not really barefoot water skiing behind that 60 inch pike. I was wearing my size 13 rubber boots which made the water skiing a lot easier, not to mention a lot less painful when slalom skiing in the rapids on the Chukuni. It was going to be a long swim back to my canoe so I just held on as long as I could. Out in the middle of Red Lake I could not stand the pain any more and managed to cut through that heavy line. It was my lucky day though. When my speed dropped I slowly sank into the water. It took a few minutes to collect my thoughts but was then startled by the throaty roar of a radial engine on a floatplane. I was never so happy to see Hugh but he had not seen my head bobbing in the lake. As he passed I was able to grab his trailing mooring line and pull myself up onto a float. It was too late to jump back in when I realized we were taking off. I quickly got in front of a strut and wrapped my legs and arms around it. More luck came my way as Hugh spotted a capsized canoe and landed to investigate. Boy was he in a special mood after spotting me as he clambered out of the cockpit. |

Yeah it's hard not to get broadsided going from Inlet Bay to Burke. Even when it's calm leaving PP I don't dawdle or lolligag or lily dip either.
I just like those names for slacking. :) |

The first year I went into Quetico, we swamped a Minnesota III canoe going across the Bay. Not much fun.

I figured you folks might be interested in this. If anyone's looked outside lately there's a big ol' full moon. Anyway, I'm currently up at the cabin doing some deer hunting....actually it's more like armed hiking cause I never shoot anything anyway. I got into the woods about 40 minutes prior to open and the moon was really bright. So bright in fact that when the moon set and the sun got above the trees it actually got darker out. I had to use my headlamp to get out of the woods when I went back for breakfast. Never see'd such a thing in all my life.

A note from my sources says Ontario parks will not be charging anyone to use their parks from now on. Apparently an internal audit showed that it costs more to process the permits than they receive.

I have it under reliable advisement that fly-in trips to Quetico's interior are coming back in '21 after the border reopens. Primary seaplane bases will be out of Atikokan, ON and the seaplane base in Ely on Shagawa near Semers Park.
The money I save on park permits should make a fly-in trip much more affordable. |

With all the recent posts about aging, joint replacements, back fusions, etc it is apparent we all have tremendous respect for Wally13's fishing prowess, and his singularly obsessive pursuit of those elusive trophy walleye. He's known to fish for hours and hours sometimes with only one arm, sore wrists, and probably a leg or two heavily wrapped in Ace bandages. But have you heard of his really legendary talent?
Wally13 has been known to catch walleye from shore with no fishing gear at all, especially during full moonlight just after dusk. You see, he is gifted with abnormally acute eyesight in the moonlight, like a big cat, and massive adrenaline surges. He'll stalk the shallows along the shore, and when he sights his unsuspecting prey, he'll crouch low to the ground, fingers and hands twitching. Then with unbelievable speed and agility, he'll leap high above the water, with full-throated growls like a grizzly, and pounce repeatedly, creating tremendous whitewater froth. He'll leap 10 feet over and over chasing his prey, only stopping when he finally has in each fist a bloodied and healthy walleye, along with one or two more in his smiling jowls. This is a true tale....I've seen it!! Although, my eyes are not as good in the moonlight compared to Wally13.... |

I heard about this forthcoming plebescite in Minnesota where we are voting for or against annexation into Ontario, eh? Betcha can guess my vote, eh?
Once I become a full-fledged Canuck, I'm gonna lobby to keep all you Covid-ridden, hockey puck, hose-heads away for a few more years, don't you know. Better fishing that way, eh? And once we're a bonafide province, I'm yanking out those pit toilets in what used to be called the BWCA, boys. LOTS of changes coming! That'll learn ya for making that Canadian Bacon movie all those years ago! Jimbo 8-) |

I've heard those exact noises you described! I always thought it was a grizzly bear, a coupe of wolverines, my wife the troll and a pack of wolves having a fierce battle in the water. It was the most hideous and haunting noise I've ever experienced. The next morning when I investigated the area where the noise came from I found all these mangled walleye remains around the area. Finally, the truth has emerged as to the source. |

There's a strong rumor going around here that one of Matren's giant fish that towed him across several lakes and a few portages in Canada (headed south I assume) was spotted nearby in east central WI. I am currently in pursuit of the beast and will post a progress report in the near future. If you don't hear from me in a week or so, you will know my fate.

I didn't take the rumor too seriously until someone mentioned something about what they thought was a pink daredevil hanging out of the beast's mouth. The rest of the guys in the bar just started laughing hysterically at the poor guy......but I took heed! The truth is out there......

After several grueling days of tracking the beast down I finally caught up to it. It was headed towards Rockford, Ill. as I suspected it would as I'm thinking that it wanted to take revenge on Marten.
Pics to follow.....I'm hoping ;) |

I finally caught up to the beast (when northerns get that big they actually loose their spots) after several days of camping out on the lake in sub zero weather. I was a bit warmer than when I tripped with Jimbo and Magic in Q and my xped pad would not hold air. Anyway, I knew the beast was out to seek revenge on Marten so I drew a line between the beasts last known location and Rockford. That's where I laid my ambush. I was alerted to its presence by a flash of something pink hanging out of its mouth and trailing fishing line sightly larger than the anchor rope on my power boat. After I speared it I had to tie the rope from the spear off to the hitch on the Jeep to pull the beast out of the water. I can now understand how the beast pulled Marten through those lakes and across the portages before it broke off. (By the size of the line/rope Marten was using he must have cut it to prevent being dragged back into the states. I didn't know that they made 64,000 lb. test Fireline). It was a great battle but I finally prevailed. Wondering if Marten can do a positive ID on the beast??
Tomorrow's POD will demonstrate that I am master of our domicile......if, and only if, the troll is not home :-/ |

I'm oft asked what it's like filleting a fish that large. To me it's easy as it's slightly smaller than most walleyes I catch ;)
