When I took my first real solo, one of my paddling friends encouraged me to use the SPOT locator every night when I got into camp. I assumed it was to see how I was progressing. He later admitted, or claimed, that he and a group of other friends reckoned it would make it easier to recover the body. Its good to have friends.
