HighNDry,
I typically alternate between my Garmin and Gaia Topo Maps apps, both of which have worked well for me in the past using my Smartphone's internal GPS. I probably operate with the Gaia app more than the Garmin. The main reason I keep the Garmin subscription is for the text message capability with folks back home. Years ago, that didn't matter so much and I would go a couple weeks at a time without contact. That changed in recent years as the health of aging relatives became more precarious and needed monitoring, even from a distance. I use a Garmin Mini in conjunction with my Samsung Android phone. The view screen on my cell phone is considerably larger than what I had on my old regular Garmin device so, when it was time to buy something new, I opted for the mini which does everything I need it to do while minimizing bulk.
