A 1/2 mile across the bay (on the right in the distance, as seen in this view from our 1st camp) promised to be a better spot... and it was, by far.  It offered access/egress from BOTH sides of the peninsula and a decent place to bathe on the far side.  Breezes more easily filtered through the trees, keeping down the mosquitoes.
