Title: Copia 2020 Meals
Post by MuleLars on Jan 8th, 2020 at 5:07pm
Hello, Everyone!

I know we're a couple of months out, but I thought I'd get a quick discussion going on the food this year. Old Salt has been so on the ball with getting everything booked, I didn't want to look like a slacker  ;D

Most of you have been with us the last few years, so you know we've done pizzas on Friday night, and then brought in barbecue for Saturday night.

I think that's worked out well, but I wanted to give everyone an opportunity to weigh in on whether or not you'd like to see any changes this year.

We can work out the details once we've settled on what we wanted to do, but lets get the ball rolling on any discussion you'd like to have about food!

And I'll for sure bring beer again, and other beverages as necessary.

So what says you all?

That's good with me.  I'll also pick up some Leinie's - Canoe Paddler (of course) and Northwoods Lager.  Post here if you have a different request. Thanks ML for your part in the festivities!

I appreciate Tom T volunteering to bring regular pop and water for our gatherings. I also appreciate those who are bringing the beer. We always have a great selection. I will bring the diet pop. 8-)

Everyone working together helps to make these gatherings successful! Thanks! 8-)

And yes, the ladies are welcome!
Feel free to invite anyone who may be interested. 8-)

In the interest of spreading responsibility (or blame) ;D , I’ve asked MuleLars to organize the meals, as he is local in Madtown and Wally 13 to be the Beer meister.

I would guess that dinner plans will be forthcoming soon. 8-)

Mossback, Wally 13 will be contacting you to accept your offer. Thanks! 8-)

We will hope that we will be able to join you for pizza (or whatever you do that first night).  Spotted Cow for me!   :D

I am having "complicated" (my surgeon's word) open heart surgery on January 29th, and time will tell if I am recovered enough to make the trip to Madison.  But I figure an incentive for prompt recovery isn't a bad thing.  We have a reservation at the place where we always stay.  (This year I did make sure to reserve one that I can cancel if necessary.)

I hope to see some of you in March, and also to hear Jerry Vandiver sing his paddle songs once again.   :)

Thank you to all of you who posted good wishes and prayers.

OS--Did you have a myectomy?  I am having a septal myectomy, and also removal of a sub-aortic membrane and replacement of my aortic valve.  The surgeon says the latter will be the most difficult, as he has to enlarge the "root" of the aortic valve, as my opening is small and I need a larger valve.  Means more time on the heart-lung machine, and that is hard on other body functions.  He said perhaps as long as 3-4 hours on the machine, and a very long surgery for Neil to wait through.  Our daughter is coming to be with him and that relieves my mind somewhat.

They say it will be 6 weeks before I feel well afterward, and that is just about 'Copia time, so I am tentative as to whether we will make the trip.  But it is a good incentive.  (And yes, I know there will be rehab--I am weak now and have almost no stamina, so I will have to build back up some energy.)

Lynda,

I don’t remember the technical name for my surgery and it was probably different, at least in some respects. I had what they call the ‘widow maker’. The primary artery was totally plugged. They put me in a wheelchair and gave me a room until they could do the surgery the next day. During the surgery they almost lost me twice. They told me they had a hard time getting me off the heart-lung machine and I was on it double the usual time. I had a very long and difficult recovery. There were times I wasn’t sure I could push through.

I guess that what I was thinking when I posted earlier was that we both have very serious conditions and that there isn’t much margin for error. I am praying that your surgery goes well and that you will be back on your feet soon. I’m looking forward to seeing your smiling face 8-) at Copia. 8-)

Interesting.  The reason I asked is because I cannot find anyone in my group of friends who have had open heart that have had the same procedure.  It would be nice to talk to one.

I have been dealing with specialists since September on these problems.  I have no arterial blockages, so that is the good part, I don't have to have any bypasses.  But the myectomy is where they go in and take out some of the thickened, stiffened tissue on the septum (the wall between the two sections of the heart) and allow my heart to beat more efficiently again.  It is the procedure that this surgeon does all the time and he is supposed to be very expert at it.  From what he said, the trickier part is the replacement of the aortic valve, partly because I am overweight.  He has to put in a larger valve and that means enlarging the "root", whatever that is.  He is concerned about how long I will be on the heart/lung machine, and warned Neil that it would seem like a very long surgery.

I asked what would happen if I decided not to have the surgery (since I am obviously upright and have had no cardiac emergencies).  He said "Well, the things wrong with your heart will never get any better, and can only get worse and worse."

If I were 90, I would just opt to have no surgery, get weaker, and probably fade away, or have a heart attack like my mother did at age 77.  But I am 74, and I would like to have a few more years of traveling, spending time with my grandchildren on our annual "grandchild vacations", going to Spartan football games, etc.  So, in essence, I am taking the challenge and praying that the risks won't outweight the benefits.

Scary stuff.

The language was different, but he said my choices were "tissue" or metal.  If I took metal, I would have to be on coumadin for the rest of my life.  I chose "tissue", and I assume it is porcine.

And it looks like I have hi-jacked this thread about 'Copia with my issues.  Sorry about that.

I will have Neil give updates after next Wednesday, on both QJ and BWCA.com.

As for now, it is just the waiting.  It has taken a while to get on the schedule, but I received a message from the surgeon's office today, so I know it is a "go" for the 29th.  Since I was originally told last August by my cardiologist that she was recommending surgery, it has been far too much "anticipating".  I am trying to keep a peaceful mind about it all, as I know I am in good hands at U of Michigan, my surgeon is experienced, and when this is successful I will have a new lease on life.  I have a little sign over my desk that says, "Good morning.  This is GOD.  I will be handling all your problems today".  That and Joshua 1:9 are what I use as my encouragement; as I know that I am in the Lord's hands in all things.

Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.   :)

SP2.

The POWER of positive thought is a powerful force.
I have a friend who is a surgical nurse. She told me that MOST of the doctors she worked with will NOT perform serious surgeries on patients who believe their
NOT going to make it through the surgery.

There is a book by a lady who worked with a DR who won a Noble Prize for his work on how EMOTIONS both good and bad can impact your health.

Negative thoughts flood your body with TOXIC hormones that cause INFLAMMATION which DRS now know, causes most forms of illness.

If you want some interesting reading while re-couping, check this out?

Thanks, ST.  Perhaps I will check out that book myself.   8-)

While it is difficult, I think I have maintained a positive attitude through all of this, and I know it is a good thing.  Obviously, a surgery of this magnitude on one's heart CAN go wrong, and I know that there is a small percentage of very serious complications that can result, even death.  However, having said that, I do have confidence in my surgeon, and I am not expecting those complications.  In my imagination, I see myself post-surgery, following orders so that I can have a successful recovery.  I do know that rehab will be necessary, and it will be work.  But I have rehabbed three artificial joints, so I am not unacquainted with pushing a bit, and dealing with pain.

Life is good here.  Spartan1 just celebrated the 11th anniversary of his kidney transplant yesterday. :)  We sent a big fruit basket (as we always do) to his donor, Leslie, and she called last evening to thank us.  She is healthy and enjoying life, and so is my husband.  Just another blessing of modern medicine.   ;)

Thanks to MuleLars for working on the dinners plans. 8-)

You have spoken and we have heard you. We will keep things the same as in years past. 8-)

On Friday, we have the QJ room available beginning at 3:00 pm. When you arrive and check in, feel free to come to our room. We will have complimentary craft beers, pop, and water. Thanks to those who volunteered to provide the beverages. At whatever point folks get hungry, we can order pizzas or whatever is on Falbos’s menu. Cost for the room is $5 per person per evening. Cost for dinner is whatever you order. Please bring cash. 8-)
If you’re planning to share in our QJ BBQ Dinner, we appreciate it if you can pay ahead on Friday. Dinner cost is $15 per person. Smoky Jon’s will provide their award-winning BBQ for the feast. 8-)

Please sign up here for the Saturday dinner. We will begin gathering whenever you get back from Copia. Dinner will be approximately 6:30 pm. Since DST is the prior weekend, we won’t lose an hour this year. 8-)

Old Salt is planning to attend all of the festivities.
We hope you will also.

Hey, Jimbo (and everyone else)-

I'll dovetail onto OS's comment.

We do need a general idea of a count to start the planning, but I will likely not order the food until a week or so ahead of time. Smoky Jon is pretty flexible and will also let you add on - even the day before - if they have the food available.

Bottom line is we want any and all to feel welcome, and we'll plan food accordingly. There are many ways to make it all work out  :)

And while we set the food up at a specific time, there's no rush to have to be there right away. The food stays until the end of the evening!

Looking forward to seeing everyone again!

Hi.  How long will people be hanging out in the reserved room on Friday night?  I am asking because there are things I want to see and get done at the show on Friday and may not get there until 7:30 or 8.  Would people be leaving by 8 or 9?

Title: Re: Copia 2020 Meals
Post by Old Salt on Feb 10th, 2020 at 12:53pm
Friday night is our ‘Paddlers Rendezvous’. It’s a come & go gathering so it’s hard to say how many will be around at any given time. We usually put in an initial pizza order around 5:30-6:00 pm and additional orders after that according to need/desires. We usually have folks hanging out until about 10 pm or so. That’s about the time some folks start to think about getting sleep before the show the next day. We have no definite ‘end time’. 8-)

Short answer: yes, we should be around. Please stop in!  8-) As in the past, we will have a ‘donation can’ to cover room rental costs. Our suggested amount is $5 per person per evening. 8-) We hope to see you there! It’s not necessary to ‘sign up’ for this event since pizza orders will be placed as needed.

We do request a ‘sign up’ for Saturday dinner. Thanks! 8-)

Would the group be against a "vegetable" option to be added this year? (not talking about baked beans though :) --- thinking "green". Any possibilities in the area for stir fried broccoli for example or mixed salad?

HnD,

I don’t think the group is against your suggestions, but when we asked for suggestions a month or so ago, the overwhelming favorite was to use Smoky Jon’s BBQ as we have in the past. We haven’t yet figured out the specific menu items because it depends on how many sign up for our Dinner. As it looks now, my best guess is that we will have a couple of meats and 2-3 sides. While BBQ isn’t typically vegan, there are some sides that may qualify. I’m not vegan so I’m not sure what qualifies. Post by HighnDry on Feb 23rd, 2020 at 2:19pm
Don't mean to cause a kerfuffle about vegetables! There is a marinated boneless chicken breast sandwich platter that comes with 2 sides, mine would be coleslaw and salad with ranch dressing. It's all under 10 bucks and I'll chip in the 15 or 20 or whatever is required to cover. I'll also bring some Heineken 0s for myself and anyone else who may feel it wise to keep a clear head amongst this group! I'll be there Friday but late, circa 7PM I think as well as Saturday night.

I'd be down with coleslaw.  My trick will be how to not over eat.  That stuff is damn good!

@HND.....I gotta question your thinking that absence of alcohol is going to result in clear heads amongst this 'Copia group.   :o

My apologies for any misunderstanding that may have been created. Let me explain how our QJ Dinner works. If someone buys an individual plate, you get a 1/4 lb of meat along with two small sides. We are asking $15 per person and using bulk purchases for meats and sides. This works out to appropriate 1/2 lb per person and enough sides to be well satisfied.

To keep the economy of this intact, we cannot do special orders. If anyone wants to get their own food and bring it in, that’s ok. We ask $5 for our room rental.

Here’s what we’ll do. I’ll start a poll. 8-)

Please only vote in this poll if you’re planning to participate in our annual QJ Dinner on Saturday, March 14.

Please only vote once. We will know that the number of votes for any item should not exceed the number of participants.

You may vote for your two favorite choices.  8-)

If you have previously signed up, there’s no need to do it again. 8-)

Here’s the list as I have it. If anything is not correct, please let us know. If you haven’t yet signed up and will be at Copia or live in the Madtown area, we hope you will consider joining us. Be sure to vote in our polls if you have not done so.

1) Old Salt
2) Magicpaddler
3) Denton Doc
4) TomT
5) Mr & Mrs mpeebles
6) Marten
7) Mossback
8) Wally 13
9) Jimbo
10) nctry Ben
11) Bob B
12) MuleLars
14) HighnDry
15) Pineknot

This list reads like a partial Hall of Fame list for QJ. It’s partial if you are not on it. We hope others will join us. This is a great opportunity to do trip planning, discuss past trips, and get your maps marked. We eagerly anticipate this gathering all winter. 8-)

If you attend our Friday Paddlers Rendezvous, we appreciate it if you can prepay for Saturday. Otherwise, just bring cash on Saturday. 8-)

Saturday is still an option, however I spoke too soon, my guest has plans for Friday after all. But I will be there. Looking forward to talking trips and any other topic. Save me some grub as I will probably have to ingratiate myself at another hors d'oeuvres affair beforehand.

We have added Jazzman to our list for Saturday dinner. 8-)

I recently became aware of a possible concern with our dinner. While our Saturday dinner will be available around 6:30 pm, it may be that a few of us may need to eat later. If so, that’s no problem. Just talk to one of us, MuleLars, Wally 13, mpeebles, or myself. The menu will be known by then, just tell us what you want, and we’ll fix a nice plate for you and set it aside before we let the wolves have at it. There’s microwave available for reheating food when you arrive. If you haven’t voted in our polls, please do so. 8-)

We don’t want anyone to miss out or go away hungry. 8-)

OS & All,

I don't mean to be a party-pooper guys but I've decided NOT to attend Copia this year.  Please remove me from meal lists, etc.. This is a hard decision for me as our Copia get-togethers are a bright spot in my year.

I will gladly mail any QJer my pre-paid ticket for the Saturday show at no cost to them.

Some will think I'm over-reacting to this virus scare & perhaps I am.  However, we're doing a LOT at my house to stay "virus-free", mainly for the sake of my 95 year-old mom who lives with us.  I simply can't look my wife & mom in the eyes and then willfully take even a minor risk such as this.  Compounding the matter is that there would be no relief of anxieties at home for up to 14 days after my return.  I simply don't want to put that on them... or myself.  I would have a hard time dealing with it if I REALLY goofed it up and actually brought a bug home (which I admit is highly improbable).

We all have to decide these things for ourselves.  The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure my decision would be different if it was just ME at home.  I expect the next action item for me will be to suspend my membership at the local gym for a while... ugh!

I hope you guys have a good time and truly wish I could enjoy a Spotted Cow or two with you.  Keep an eye on hygiene!

Best wishes,

Jimbo   8-)

P.S.  For what it's worth, unless they shut the borders down (which is highly unlikely), I am definitely moving forward with all tripping plans for the coming season.  Traveling with 1 or 2 guys is an entirely different level of risk.

We’re all sorry to hear that you won’t be coming. But I think we all understand. We will have hand sanitizer at the ready in our QJ room. Please use it! That’s a generous offer on your wristbands. Someone needs to jump on it. 8-)

While we hope no one else needs to cancel, if you do, please let them and me know that it’s due to coronavirus concerns. Our rate depends on numbers and they need to know that corona is the reason so we are not penalized. Thanks! 8-)

My situation is a bit similar to Jimbo's, but I'm not making the call until Monday.  SXSW's cancellation yesterday has all but put a nail in my decision (which today stands about 80/20 for staying home).

Then, yesterday, the CDC's announcement that individuals over 60 should not be in large groups (e.g., on airplanes, in large family gatherings, attending religious services, etc.) due to the increased exposure level for those whose immune systems might be compromised.  I'm WELL past 60, supposed to fly on an airplane to Madison (with a stop each way at an international airport), potentially attending a large gathering and my immune system isn't what it used to be.

So, I'll see if anything breaks in the next couple of days.

I will definitely advise meal planners and the motel that I'm not coming because of coronavirus if the call goes that way.  (I hope I'm not also eating an airline ticket!)

I have a feeling the show attendance will be way down this year.  Which is good news for those who do go.

Saw on ebay that a bottle of purell is going for $89.   :P  Something tells me there will be ALL KINDS of new products for sanitization on the market soon.  It's the American way.  ;)

I think it sounds like you guys are talking about a close cousin of this virus called the ‘copiavirus’. The symptoms are similar. If infected, there’s a fever. That fever can express itself as a desire to buy or sell paddle related stuff. Probably the worst case I ever saw was a huge pink sale hanging in our room a few years ago. ;D The fever also creates a strong desire to infect others by sitting in close proximity swapping tales of yesteryear and woe. All it takes is one sicko to infect the room. It’s the sadistic pleasure that is derived from infecting others that some find puzzling or disgusting. ;D

You know that a sick person has entered the room when there’s a stuffed map case in hand. You want to steer clear of that guy. I mean, who carries an armload of maps to walk around a motel? Can a guy like that possibly be trusted in the woods? ;D If you have the fever, it’s impossible to make rational decisions. It’s not unusual for spouses to question decisions. It’s like ‘how many kinds of stoves do you need?’ The spouse is infected when she doesn’t realize that it’s the wrong question to ask. ;D

Sorry if I stepped on any toes. With knee replacement having been deferred until after Copia, I stumble around a lot.

OK.  I'm officially cancelled.  My decision was based more on airplane flights than happenings associated with 'copia, but with a plane change each way going through a different international airport, this just added up to more potential risk than I care to expose myself (at my age).  Of course, having at least one confirmed case of coronavirus in Madison also didn't put any checks in the plus column.

I confirmed my cancellation with the hotel staff and conveyed that I was with the QJ group and was cancelling because of coronavirus.  They didn't seem to be phased by any of that.

Oh well ... maybe next year!

We certainly understand. My previous post was intended as tongue-in-cheek humor. Everyone has to make their own best decision about what to do and it’s not anyone’s place to question it. It may be a smaller Copia this year, but protecting ones health is paramount. Hopefully, this disruption is short-lived.

Fox News is reporting that the CDC is advising against airlines and cruise ships.

Title: Re: Copia 2020 Meals

Yeah the cruise ship industry is about to go dormant for awhile.

So, I have this idea of bringing a replacement pack of "wet ones" to Copia.  I want to frequently wash my hands there but gotta figure the bathrooms will be packed with like minded patrons.  So my question is, will the wet wipes do the job or are there better recommendations to keep the bad stuff off my hands and onto my face? Thx.

Title: Re: Copia 2020 Meals

We will have a bottle of hand sanitizer in the QJ room and we encourage everyone to use it. My habit for years is to keep a 1-2 oz hand sanitizer in my pocket for that purpose. If you decide to use wipes, the key ingredient needs to be a disinfectant. It should say that it kills viruses. I carry mine everywhere. 8-)

Coranavirus is the term for a family of viruses.
COVID-19, the strain from China is in that family BUT it's so new there is NOT enough data to conclusively say hand wipes will work on it for sure?

They "probably" will, but the BIGGEST thing is doing the same you do for the flu. Wash your hands frequently and DON'T touch your face/mouth.

That is very hard to do for long for most people. I'd do the fist bump greetings. Use your elbow to open doors, foot to flush toilets, sneeze into your elbow and I wouldn't be sharing FINGER type food for obvious reasons.

How NOT to eat Pizza! ;) ;D ;D

ANY wipe that says it kills CORANAVIRUS is good to use until they get more specific data.

Hey folks, I've cancelled out too unfortunately. I was really looking forward to this year as we had (have) a great group of folks as always showing up. I have similar concerns as Jimbo and DD and cancelling out gave my wife a big sigh of relief. My salad goes to OS and the coleslaw to TomT. The turkey breast is for walley13.

See you out on the water this season!

PS. I told them that I was with Quiet Journey and they said that they've been getting a fair number of cancellations so this is a real bummer for the local businesses in Madison as well.

Unfortunately, the caronavirus crisis cancellations have risen to a level that we need to revise our plan for Saturday dinner. We don’t have enough to justify bulk BBQ, so our adjusted plan is meet in our QJ room up to 6:30 pm and then walk or drive up the street to Fat Jacks BBQ about 3-4 blocks up the road. We will order from the menu, Dutch treat. 8-) After dinner we will return to our QJ room for the usual bantering and storytelling. We will have the usual complimentary assortment of craft beers, pop, and water.8-)

Friday Paddlers Rendezvous remains unchanged. We can gather at 3:00 pm or whenever you arrive. We request a $5 donation to cover the rental costs of $150. As usual, we will order pizza as desired through the evening.  8-)

Given this change, we no longer need a headcount. If you want us get something to bring back from Fat Jacks, please let us know on Friday and we’ll work it out. 8-)
