Just finished the section where the magazine contributors give input.  The topic is "What's in your pack?" and QJ's Jimbo happens to be a frequent magazine contributor. 

I love this topic and all the little details that go into canoe tripping.  Packing for tripping is a very personal thing and something that evolves over time.  I had always gone solo or with newbies until 2016 when I met up for 3 nights with another experienced solo (Pineknot from this board).  Our 6 man trip (Six Guys and a Dog) in Sept. 2019 opened my eyes to new ways of doing things.  Pineknot's container packing system, Portage Dog's tarp rigs, Wally13's fine tuned breaded walleye filets, MagicPaddlers "Go light or go home" packing style and also his technique for doing dishes.

Then we have Jimbo.  You can read the article by picking up the magazine.  I'll say this - he's one fine tuned tripper.  He knows what he needs and likes.  I know one thing, the smell of that kelly kettle wafting into the fire pit area from over yonder most mornings was very welcome.  Everyone else had hissing stoves going for coffee and Jimbo was burning twigs and pinecones for his. It created a nice ambiance.  :)

But Jimbo, I would like to turn you on to top quilts and under quilts world someday.  ;)

Re: BWJ's Collective Wisdom column... sometimes I think Stu keeps me around by way of "comic relief" as sharp contrast to the more serious trippers who REALLY know what they're doing!

I think you'll find this column in the upcoming Spring issue to be especially interesting.  Here's a hint.  Stu should enlist PineKnot as "Special Guest Contributor" due to his renown acumen with this camp skill.  He would be PERFECT for this piece!  In fact, I doubt there is any way for me to finish writing my contribution to the topic without at least mentioning one of the gods among us....

Big snow this weekend.  That means I'll be burying myself in things related to canoeing!!!

A bottom quilt is necessary for me but my sleeping bag serves as my top quilt.  My bag does not unzip all the way to the bottom of the bag.  This leaves a foot box so it can’t slip off my feet with it turned upside down over me.

You will want a quilt meant for hanging under a hammock because it will have the shock cords built in to close the gaps between the hammock and the quilt.

Underquilts are the bomb. So much easier and less bulk than a pad. I, like Magic, used my bag upside down as a top quilt but a dedicated TQ is very easy and less bulk than a pad.
You could mention that you know a guy who cuts wood on the route and stashes it in the forest along  to be picked up on future trips. 😄🤟

After pestering a couple of members about the virtues of hammock life, I made several purchases during the dog days of the holiday seasons.  Sad fact is I have barely taken the bits and pieces out of the boxes, let alone fastening them to a tree for a test drive.  Keep the info coming, my education needs it.

Mossback I would start by watching Shug Emery videos on his YouTube page. He has a series for newbies there, you might have to look to find them bc it was done a few years ago. He’s gotta lot of how to stuff.

Tents are a good option too :) but someday I'll have to try the hammock thing.

I have watched quite a lot of Shug's videos, but it has been random bits as I have blundered into them.  I also tend to get sidetracked on occasion with the circus side of Shug.   If it ever quits raining in Indiana, maybe I can get outside and find a couple of trees to see how all of this fabric goes about replacing a tent.
