A comment on another thread serves as the stimulus for this post. It had to do with the lack of presentations on a given topic. I thought as one who has presented a few times and who has learned the 'ropes', I would try to explain the process about how presentations make it to Copia. 8-)

First, all presenters are volunteers. No one is paid to present. Also, they don't want presentations that are infomercials for a business or destination area. They don't want presentations regarding a cause or political agenda. What they do want is personal experiences and 'how tos'. Some may recall that a few years ago, Wally 13 and I co-presented on how to plan a fishing-based wilderness canoe trip. Magicpaddler and I co-presented on how to outfit your canoe for fishing, with a major section on how to mount and use depth-finders. Last year I presented a few paddling options in Alaska. This year, I will present on how to fish Alaska Rivers for salmon and trout (detailed in my post in the Alaska Forum.)  8-)

I just mentioned two other board members who have done great jobs presenting in the past, and I'm confidant that they could do so in the future. I also believe there are others here who could put together a great program. 8-)

If there is interest, the most important piece is that you have something of interest and value to share or teach. Assuming that most do, the next step is to have sufficient time to put together a powerpoint program. It's not difficult if you have recent powerpoint on your laptop.

After Labor Day, usually mid-September, Copia sends an email to previous presenters to invite proposals. If you don't get that email, you can contact Amelia Goetz at: ameliag@rutabaga.com to express your interest. Include a brief description of what you would like to do. They will also want an outdoorsy headshot. You will be added to their email list, so don't treat 'em as Spam. They choose the programs in November, usually just ahead of Thanksgiving. You will be notified if your presentation was accepted or not. 8-)

What's the secret sauce? Near as I can figure, it generally needs to have something to do with paddle sports. It should be something that will appeal to a wide audience. There should be water involved. If you can find a niche with appeal, that will help. Examples, Woodland Caribou, Wabakimi, etc. I think 'Alaska' has good appeal. 8-)

I encourage you to give strong consideration to putting together your own presentation for 2021 and beyond. 8-) I'll be glad to assist in any way I can. It's a real joy to share something you're enthusistic about in front of 2-300 eager folks. Allow a few minutes for Q&A at the end. 8-)

Expect fewer questions if the crowd is at that lower end of the spectrum... 2 eager folks.
