A fellow canoe tripper who is also a knife maker put up a video of a knife that he calls the Quetico Kleaver.  He's struck a deal with Piragis who will offer them for sale in the spring of 2020. 

He posted a short video of it and I now have this on my wish list.  Also, I heard from him via email that he is producing some with an upgraded handle that he is personally selling so as not to compete with Piragis. Check this out.  He does top notch work.

  I'm a big fan of knives/edged tools. He makes some gorgeous handmade knives.

  I look at them like I do high-end fishing rods/reels for canoe trips. IF you can't AFFORD to lose them, you shouldn't bring them.

  I take my better knives when I'm in the woods hunting or hiking and my cheaper ones when I canoe because I would  :'( if I ever lost a work of art like that in a canoeing incident.

I look at getting the Kleaver as a solid investment.  I'll have it to use for the rest of my life, it weighs about 1 lb., and I'll pass it on to my son when I'm gone.  I'm a big fan of quality gear.  I've got around 25 years of tripping left so what I buy I hope I won't ever have to replace.  Of course there's exceptions to that but you get the idea. 

* I've got a box opener razor knife I still use today that's about 40 years old.  Why? Well, it has a braided "tail" on it that I learned how to make from a good friend I met at my first real job when I was 19. And it works perfect.
