Good suggestions and thanks! I'll take a deeper dive into this during the week. I just got back from a short trip with my daughter up in Ely. LOTS of people up there but that's to be expected. I'd agree that I'm looking at something like the river tripper that you suggested -- just something with more rocker than my current flat water boats and some toughness to the layup. Weight's a consideration as well.
