Title: Fishing Axioms Post by Old Salt on Apr 12th, 2020 at 5:14pm
This could be fun! Post your favorite fishing sayings, axioms, adages, truisms. Here’s a couple to get started as we look forward to open water season while watching a foot or so of snow fall today. Got nowhere to go...
1) The lure in the water will catch more fish than all the lures in the box. 2) Never leave good fishing in search of good fishing. 8-) |

If you are new to a lake, start fishing from your campsite.
You waste fishing time paddling to a spot away from your campsite. If you do catch fish away from your campsite, you have to paddle back to it tomorrow. After you paddle away from your campsite you will find yourself in front of some's else's campsite. |

What's really frustrating is if you go out specifically to take some back to camp but get a nice walleye or trout right when you start, like the first or 2nd cast. You let it go thinking you have a good 3 hours left of fishing to get some for supper. Well, you know how this story ends. Nothing but smallies and hammer handles for dinner. :-/ :-/ |

The most important feature of a fishing lure (from a design and manufacturing point of view) is its efficacy at catching fishermen (or women).

Moray described fishing winds in California. Minnesota fish must be different. What I heard is as follows:
Wind from the north fish hard of mouth Wind from the east fish bite the least Wind from the south fish soft of mouth Wind from the west fish bite the best. The fish in MN and CA agree on the east and west winds. |

Fishy fishy in the brook
Grandpa caught 'em by the hook Mommy fried 'em in the pan And Davy ate 'em like a man. Just the thought of a floured Spring bullhead fried in lard or old bacon grease makes my mouth water. I know, I know, eeew. Damn they were good though. |

Reminds me of an old Sven and Ole joke.
Ole is out ice fishing one afternoon and hears from the heavens; "There's no fish in there!" Ole says; "God, is that you?" only there is no response. A few minutes later the same thing happens. "There's no fish in there!" and again Ole says; "God, are you trying to tell me to drill another hole somewhere?" Still no answer back but Ole goes and drills another hole anyway. A few minutes later the same thing happens again but this time the voice is booming; "THERE'S NO FISH IN THERE!!!" Ole again says; "Please, Lord, if you're trying to tell me something please make it clear to me." This time the voice answers back; "Dammit Ole, this is Sven the ice-rink attendant and I'm tellin' ya there's no fish in there." |

Using bacon grease to cook fish and other things used to be common practice until we learned about the adverse health issues. When I first went to Quetico we went to Lonely Lake in 1969 with our fearless leader who was the high school shop teacher and assistant football coach. You were eligible to go after you graduated from high school and he invited you to come. For breakfast we fried up a bunch of bacon and used the grease to fry eggs. The eggs were tasty, but all that grease could give you heart burn. Today the thought of frying eggs in bacon grease really seems gross.

Yup.....we used to have fired bullheads every year as well. IF memory serves, easter used to be about the time they'd come in shallow and we'd catch them with cane poles. Thanks for the memory!! :) :) |

My Dad had a friend that made cane poles. He would get them for free and we kids would test them out. I remember one year I being the oldest I got to test my Dad's friend's latest cane pole. He made a 2 piece one that used a ferrule of his own design. I was the envy of all the other kids. We rode our bikes to all the local lake/river fishing spots. Having a short 2 piece cane pole made for better hauling. I'd get to the fishing spot first and claim the best spot. ;) That all changed the next year when the other kids got them too. ;D ;D |
