OK....So I was starting to hear the crickets chirp again.

Have we all ran out of anything to say or argue about?

Maybe this should be in the Fishing Forum... ;D

Probably so, but it is an effective tactic to misplace it here IF what he was REALLY fishing for was to trigger a response.

Just look...he's caught TWO already!

At the risk of veering off into the weeds even farther, the subject line was a Tip of the Hat to Pat McManus.  I believe the title was The Care and Feeding of Old Men.  Where some young upstart would toss out a comment sure to be challenged.

Fish number three:  If it's just conversation, there's plenty activity in BTC...back to the cathole...er, civilization.  It has gone rather quite.  Been busy packing gear and food, plus finishing a new solo removable portage yoke.  That has turned out quite well. Ended up using some cam levers vs. the so common star knobs...one flick and it's locked onto the gunnel. Also plenty of checking maps of the BW, since I have little experience there.  June 14-25 with a plan to hit Mugwump PMA.  Trying to come up with a plan for July-August as well.  Hoping the Q is open by then, but need a BW alternative...thinking NW, Crooked and beyond.

Regarding better fishing - it is for me, since my first trip was in '99.  It's probably just that I'm better at fishing.  Plus I go more often, which is definitely better! Also easier to feed old men when you can actually catch the fish....just sayin'.

BTW, thanks for stirring the pot MB.

PD,  Glad you have a plan.   Wish I did.    I/we would be interested in your solo yoke.  I have ginned up a couple, but still not completely happy with them.

MB,

PM me an email address and I'll send you some pics  - since I have not invested time in figuring out posting them here.  I paddled last night and gave the new yoke a test on the ~80 rod portage from parking lot to put-in and it was rock solid.

This has nothing to do with this post.   I have always assumed that Portage Dog was from the state of Virginia, but it occurred to me that you might be from Virginia, MN.  Will you please put an end to my confusion?  You can, of course, say it is none of my business.

Hey PD, what's on the menu for you and Lawrence.  Any special desserts? He might actually gain weight on a trip with you.   ;D

No.  ;D  It's hard to tell and it's a very cool moniker so I thought someone else may have taken the name.

Westwood,

This whole post thread has nothing to do with anything!  Mossback just started a virtual Rave!  Glad we got folks talkin'!

Be confused no longer….you are correct - the Commonwealth of Virginia....they don't call themselves a state???  Whaaatever.  Originally from WI, so a born/bred cheesehead I am!!!  :D  We've crossed paths at 'copia - Country Inn & Suites gatherings.

Really?  I always thought it was a turtle!  (Maybe because as a child I had a pet turtle that got all mossy on its shell.)   ;)

You learn something every day.  You guys are so educational!  And yes, I am the same Spartan2 on BWCA.com, but of course no one asked that.   ;D

Linda, maybe you're thinking shellback.  Ol' Navy term for someone (usually a sailor, I'm guessing) that has crossed the equator....usually accompanied by some insane hazing ceremony.  Not unlike the Homme du Nord thing Voyagers did.

My Dad would call snapping turtles "Big 'ole mossbacks" so I'm with you Linda, I always think of turtles for that term.

Linda, (Lynda?),  The reason no one asked if you were the same Spartan 2 on BWCA is because the Spartans are legendary and everyone knows who you are.

Hey TomT - didn't forget about you...just so much else going on!  You've enjoyed (I hope) some of these, but here's a sampling of the menu:
Desserts - cheesecake with Oreo crumbles (vs. the pecan/caramel we had), a mixed berry cobbler, dark chocolate squares, maple sugar candies, caramel creams
Libations - all rums - Ron Zacappa Centenario, Ron Zacappa XO, Kirk & Sweeney 12 yr, and Plantation XO
Dinners - grilled ribeye with potatoes, Kalamojaka (Finnish fish chowder - receipe was posted here a while back), smoked salmon and pasta with pesto, artichokes, Kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes, bacon wrapped walleye (we hope!), Zup's smoked brats with red beans&rice, chicken gravy with stuffing, fish fry with wild rice, pecan-panko crusted walleye (again, we hope!) with wild rice, spam mac&cheese and Zup's smoked brats with hashbrowns and eggs - most veggie sides are freeze dried corn or green beans from North Bay Trading Co.
Breakfasts - bacon, egg, cheese hashbrown scramble, eggs/bacon, pancakes/bacon, cereal, breakfast bars, oatmeal with cranberries and pecans
Lunch - we're doing our own lunches, but mine includes some landjager and trailmix, cheeses sticks, dried fruits, ProBars (like Cliff, but waaaay better), tuna, salmon, pbj

Magic considers food just fuel, but to me having some great meals enhances the experience, so he was happy to leave most of the cooking to me.  I try to do a mix of really involved and really simple meals depending if you're laying over or rolling into camp late.

Mpeebles, from a "fine cuisine" standpoint, your big error last year was to join Magic & me for our Spring trip last year.  PD showed up for our Fall trip!

First, you have to move to Utah, both of you become Mormons, both your wives have to agree and MOST importantly of all, PD would have to lose his freaking DIY mind.  :-? :P :'( :'(

Other than that, no problems at all.  ;) ;D ;D

Yeah...that's not the first north woods proposal I've had based on pure emotion.  Hunger is a emotion, right?  That feeling in it pit of your stomach?

Mike - we got room on the late July trip...just sayin'....

PD, you raise the bar for all of us.  :o

I'm happy to cook simply but do enjoy some bakery brownies and good quality chocolate bars during the trip.

Oooh. . .I like "legendary".  It seems so much more classy than an old lady who just doesn't know when to shut up!   8-)

Jimbo....I don't know about that.  Magic made some mighty fine grilled lake trout!  I now use his recipe.

PD......thanks for the invite.  I have other stuff going on then.  I'm hoping for a late August trip in WCPP.

I'm getting ants in my pants.  I'm thinking when the garden gets going on it's own the better half and I might do a road trip out west

Stay safe.........

Portage Dog thanks for the information.  I spent my first 24 years in Wisconsin and never heard the term cheesehead until I moved to Minnesota.  Hey, almost everybody loves cheese.

By the way, my husband (the "Legendary Spartan1") agrees with me that a mossback is a turtle!   ;)
MossBack, I think I would like your wife! ;D
