Yeah, I didn’t realize how good of a writer he is. The moral of this story for me is to never howl in wolf country. I would have ran like a sissy and been run down and eaten if that was me.  ;D

That experience would certainly get the adrenaline pumping! I'd probably carry a bear banger and/or air horn next time--- just in case!

Reminds me that when your in the North Woods, we humans are NOT the Apex Predators, unless you're armed and even then it can get dicey.

Quetico Dave had to save his big old female Newfoundland dog from the amorous clutches of a huge black Alpha male wolf, right behind his cabin.

  Dave's dog is at least 80-100 lbs. The wolf had her pinned by the neck from the rear. He didn't hurt her, but she was crying in fear and that's what alerted him.

  Imagine how big and strong that wolf had to be to pin a dog that size down like that. :o

Never had any problems with wolves, never felt a threat. I travel hours and hours and miles and miles, daily (in the winter), nearly always solo. I see wolves often. I've even had an occasion on a frozen lake where I witnessed a pack disperse to "hunt" me as I skate skied on a b-dub lake [four wolves came on to ice (upwind), saw me, one went into woods on west shore, one on the east (both moving in my direction) and the two largest came directly at me on the ice. When they ascertained the strangely moving beast was human (about 60-80 yards out) they all exited via the east side of the lake. I saw them (or a couple of them) three my times on my circuit of the three connected lakes, each time they bolted away]. I do fear for my dog when he gets too far away.  I've had a dog chase a wolf across a frozen lake, gaining slowly on the wolf- me yelling "You don't want to catch that...."

Eleven is a large pack.

Wow.  Great stuff.   I've only seen two in my life, both crossing roads. There are a few in our cabin's area but I've yet to see any tracks on the property and no pics on trail cams as of yet.

I have friends up by Lake of the Woods and they go out as a family to call in wolves. Papa Wolf, Mama Wolf and a young pup all in perfect harmony. Papa tells me that when you call in wolf country there will be a response from the wolves. You may not see or hear them but go back the next day and you will see that they came in to your spot.

I do not fear the wolves either but they are after dinner and any blur in the distance could be dinner that day.

The "marking" territory scene is a classic. I had an old timer who hunted/trapped for a living in Alaska tell me if you wanted to keep predators away from your camp, you needed to do what he did? He swore it works but regardless, I do my best to mark my camps when solo that way. ;) ;D ;D

I figure it can't hurt and I enjoy that freedom for some bizarre reason.  :-? ;D ;D

 

When I ski and share the trails with wolves I will mark where they mark. Seems to create a frenzy of tracks and more marking for my next outing.

I loved that movie when it first came out and then I got the book.  Farley Mowat has become a favorite author of mine and I probably have 4-5 of his books now.  Never Cry Wolf is even better on paper.  :)
