Zip-Locks are just part of a multi-layer system. Most of my food is pre-packed store food that I mix to make one-pot meals. I leave the food in the plastic bag (if it comes in one) and just scrap the bulky box. Then into a zip-lock bag and then in those 2 Glad odor control bags. Those food buckets have a waterproof twist on lid. I would think if something is waterproof then it would be odor-proof as well ( coming from inside)? I don't have a vacuum bag machine. I might get one down the road. I think if you re-packaged all your food in vacuum bags plus the zip-locks, you'd be pretty secure. I don't know for sure but I suspect that bears that go after those dedicated bear cans are attracted to them because of food odors on the OUTSIDE of the barrel not coming from the inside? How many people clean fish, wash the fillets then wipe their hands on their pants? How many people get food on their hands then handle the bear cans? I think my current system is pretty secure. If I get a vacuum machine and don't handle the food buckets with dirty hands it would be about the best I could do. Of course the first time a bear gets my food this all goes out the window down shit's creek! ;) ;D ;D ;D |
