Sometimes I find the need to flush the filter daily, especially during a June trip when there is a lot of pollen in the water.

I use this little trick to catch big particles/pollen
BEFORE I put the water in my gravity filter bag.

Get some of those Granny Knee high nylon stockings.
Pull one over your pot/pan/water bottle as you fill from lake.

It will cut down on the junk that ends up clogging your filter. I guess you could call it my DIY pre-filter.

I cut the foot part off and use it as a coffee filter.
Put ground coffee in sock, tie simple overhand knot and put in coffee pot and add water. I burn the coffee grounds in the fire-pit. The DIY filter I hang on branch to dry and it's good to go.
