Closing on a new home this month.  Want to purchase a canoe hoist for the garage.  We'll have 11 foot high ceiling in the garage so plenty of space.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a decent hoist?  Not looking for anything flimsy that may break and drop the canoe on the concrete floor....

2 pulleys, 2 hooks, rope. Easy DIY. 8-)

I've helped people install DIY hoists for ladder etc but the same principal works for a canoe.

  It can be a easy as what OS said, but for a few extra bucks you can get something that has a built in safety feature that locks the rope in place so you can't accidentally drop the canoe on the floor.
 
  If you had 8 ft ceilings and for some reason you let the rope go to soon. you could reach up and catch one end of the canoe to maybe the whole thing and either stop it or guide it down softly.

With 12 ft ceilings your probably going to hang it up 10 ft or so. It falls accidentally, that's much harder to catch/control.

This is rated the #1 hoist. For the price it's worth the look. Another thing is to make damn sure when you mount the brackets the screws are into the center of the joist/truss. If the trusses don't work out distance wise to where you want to mount the hoist, you would have to mount a 2x6 spanning 2 trusses and then install the bracket.

  You would be surprised how many people mount something from the ceiling think it was sturdy only to find they were not in the center of a truss and it all came crashing down.  :o :'( ;D

Another thing to consider if you DIY yourself is to install it on a 12 ft ceiling, your looking at using a 8 ft step ladder unless you have a scaffold to work off of.

How comfortable are your working off a step ladder like that?

Might be worth it to get whatever set-up you like and have the contractor install for you. Right set-up it's piece of cake. Wrong set-up and  :o :'( :'(

I prefer a trapeze - two 2x4s each hung on two lines - and canoe sits upside down on them.  Keeps dirt out and I can store a few items on seats.  Rope and pulleys from Home Depot.

I hang mine on home made 2x4 brackets on the side wall so the only thing I can offer is don't use drywall screws for the rope cleats.

That canoe/kayak hoist I linked to has a 2 prong hook that holds the strap. You could hang the canoe upside down just as easy as right-side up.

Or you could do the trapeze thing with and hang each end of the rope off the hook.

Biggest thing is that safety brake. I would discount the value of that.

Whatever PK chooses and uses I'm sure he'll do a report on it so others can benefit from it.

That's a great way to do it but PK said he had 12 ft ceilings in his new garage. It sounds to me he wants to hang his canoes so they don't take up sidewall space AND you could park your vehicles under??

I don't know if it was the same brand as the one ST posted, but I helped a friend put up an identical hoise system for her sea kayak.

One big advantage to this system is that it is designed to raise and lower both ends at the same time, and is easy to use.  Wasn't hard to install with a low ceiling -  we mounted it on one longer plank that we bolted to the ceiling joists

My own do it yourself hoist is kind of a PITA to load a heavy canoe on - have to raise one end a bit, then tie it off and raise the other end a bit, etc.  I'm just using 1/4" nylon ropes, and when I raise one side or the other, it often tries to roll the canoe _( I have to have it bottom side up to fit over my truck ) so then I have to go and rearrange it.  It's for my white water canoe, and I don't uyse it often enough to change what I have,
but the store bought hoist sure works a lot easier.

  That's a good idea BUT I'd wager for the price of those DIY parts, you could buy the type of hoist I referenced for the same price.

You get ONE point of lift PLUS that auto-brake.

  Another thing is that appears to be a 8 ft maybe 10 ft ceiling. With the straps loose all the way, he was barely able to grab the loose end.

PK said he had 12 ft ceilings. Most of those cam straps are about 15 ft. Rigging it like this on a 12 ft ceiling I don't think the average cam strap is going to be long enough for you to reach the tag end.

Maybe use something like this where you can cut the rope to the size you need?

I did mine by using a crank style boat winch and a few pulleys.  I set up four of these units (three canoes and one kayak).  They were  designed so I could put the canoe trailer under them and raise and lower accordingly.  I used nylon strap from the winch to the first pulley then rope going through the pulleys.  They work great.   I have the luxury of a large storage garage although I used to hang two of them in the attached garage. 

Upon seeing some of my engineering feats one of my kids stated that I would have been highly recruited at Stonehenge >:(
