Is today's POD the narrows between Jean and Ceph Lk?  Sure looks like it to me.

The real question about today's POD: where is the mystery jug hidden in this picture?

I assure you, it's in there somewhere....

Likely in my other hand.

Ah, today's POD shows one of my favorite campsites!

The last time I was there I was shocked to see that some idiots had chopped a few live branches off of some of the cedar trees.

On the brighter side, years earlier, I was camped solo there late in September.  It was an overcast, very chilly, and windy as hell Sunday afternoon.  I was trying to follow gameplay of the Minnesota Vikings through the heavy static on my tiny radio.  By half-time I was hungry.  So, I challenged myself to dodge waves & wind (in a relatively protected area nearby) to try to land a decent laker for my mid-day meal, yet be back in time to catch the balance of the game.  Conditions were gnarly and fast becoming far worse, so I had to hustle. Hunger had overcome my sense of caution... but this time I got lucky.

So it was that I was busy fixing the very nice eater-size lake trout that was sizzling in my big BWJ fry pan, listening to the 2nd half of the game, when I happened to look up from the flames at motion that caught my eye near the beach.  I was flabbergasted to see MagicPaddler blowing right into my camp. While we WERE supposed to hook up sometime that week, no way I figured Magic to battle big wind & waves on Pickerel all the way from French Lake THAT particular day. It was rough; REAL rough.

Anyway, I got over my shock at seeing him (did he have a death wish?) and hurriedly ran to beach to help him land before waves knocked him over. AS I am reaching for his hand to pull him ashore, INSTEAD of grabbing it, he sticks a cold plastic bottle into my outstretched fingers, saying "I brought you a present." He had filled it with cold beer just before he launched at French Lake and, somehow, managed to keep it cold during 3-4 hours of battling the waves.

Magic gladly helped me gobble down my lake trout - he deserved it - and I enjoyed the first and only beer I've ever had in Quetico.  That was our ONLY beer but - as is only appropriate since these ARE, in fact, PJ's sequence of PODs - I DO recall there being a jug of something else stashed away somewhere nearby on that beautiful sandy beach site.

A single picture but MANY great memories there!  Thanks for that.

Later,

Jimbo  8-)

The Canadian Riviera.  That is a nice site and we will likely be visiting mid July.  Alas, all whisky caches have been recovered sans one (Jean Lake, 1996). I'm sure that the 4oz. plastic jug has either been recovered by French fish pirates, the Lord Selkirk Boy Scouts, ST (who likely crawled across the ice to find it), an amphibian-mode polyhumper, or a PJ-stalking Holly Armstrong.

Today's POD reminds me why I like to paddle those winding narrow streams. You never know what will be around the next corner?

Thank you for the compliment, Neal.  DB seems to be really reaching back into the history to find these POD’s, but when I see mine I can feel just like I felt when I stood there snapping the shutter.  That was a lovely day in a lovely place.  And I do enjoy having the opportunity to make reflection shots!

Today's POD brings back the time my old tripping buddies hung their wet clothes over a drying beam built over a fire pit on a river trip in Maine.

Per usual they got into the hard liquor heavy that night. I went to bed, they stayed up to star watch.

They forgot about the clothes and threw some pine tree tops into the fire which burst into flames 8 ft tall.

Next morning they were still in bed. I went to the facilities and noticed one of the guy's ONLY pair of pant's had been burnt up!  ;) ;D

He had to borrow the only pair of pants that would fit. They were "used" and in a bad way.  :o :'(

I really like today’s POD.  I did’t see it until almost bedtime, as we were on the road to the canoe country.  Nice to be back on the Gunflint for another cabin week.

I can’t remember exactly, but somewhere between Nym and Sturgeon. Probably Nym-Batch or Batch-Maria. I was impressed with the work done by the portage maintenance crews.

Thanks Jimmar  :)
I agree the portage crews do good work when they can get to a portage in need.

I’m thinking Maria-Jesse. It was wetter than that last time we used it. It was a rock-hopper. 8-)

That sailboat rigging with 2 canoes from the POD about 3 days ago was a technique that Hap Wilson used to sail he and his clients down from the Seal River estuary all the way to Churchill when he was on his Seal River trip back in '95.

I don't think that I would try it without a lot of practice though!

Really enjoying this grou of POD’s.   We are in Gothenburg, Sweden today on a Baltic Sea Cruise, and it is nice to see those beautiful photos of the BWCA, too.

Thanks.

Mike - that is a work of art.  It should be hanging on a wall somewhere.  Nicely captured.

I had to do a double take of today's POD  :-?
Growing up in the 50's, we had linoleum tile in the mud room that looked just like this!

You could never really tell if the floor was clean or not because it always looked the same.  ;) ;D

Not sure what we're looking at today, beyond a jumble of rocks and sticks, but it is kind of a neat reflection shot.
