Title: Horton River, NWT Post by Mad_Mat on Nov 18th, 2024 at 3:54pm
jeeze, looking at the posts here, I seem to be hogging this forum - hope nobody minds, just sharing.
but anyways, if you are bored here is my trip report for a trip to Horton River in Northwest Terr. You can skip the yadda, yadda and go right to the pictures at the end. this was the best fishing I have had on a far north trip. and I realize now I never got around to finishing my Quetico report for this year - have to dredge my memory and see if I can get one done. mat (You need to Login or Register |

Great trip report and pics!
Did you bring a shotgun this trip? I was surprised you didn't see any bears or at least some prints. |

timing was not right to see much wildlife - every trip report I've read people see lots of stuff - wolves, musk ox, bears - we saw next to nothing. Decided not to bring a shotgun on this trip - with a group of 10, when we stayed with the group that is, bears don't seem to bother large groups.
Keith preferred to have the river to ourselves, so he eliminated time frames where there would be outfitter trips at the same time - I'm thinking two weeks or so earlier would have been better, and would have had higher water also - the animals, except for loner caribou bulls, all seemed to have gone farther north, or farther away from the river. There were musk ox tracks at most of the places we camped, but all 2 weeks or so old it seemed - saw zero bear tracks, and only 1 set of moose tracks. I was surprised at how much forest there was along the river (micro climate) this far above the arctic circle. |

I'm going to read this through in detail as I've been thinking about a far north trip for awhile now. Horton has been on my list.
