  I think it's a matter of opinion, experience and comfort level.
I've seen canoes hauled both ways.
I saw a guy hauling a small aluminum fishing boat going up I-75 in Northern MI lose his boat and cause a serious accident.

He had it strapped to a rack. I don't know if it was with straps/rope but the front one broke.
The boat started bouncing up and down and broke the rear strap/rope and flew off hitting a car behind it which caused a small pile-up.

He was in the slow lane, I was behind coming in the fast lane.
This is the way I've always done it but it doesn't mean your way is wrong. I see the bow/stern straps as just an added level of security. Maybe overkill.
