Well... What the heck... I'll a swing at it. I hope everyone will take the plunge.

Basics
Where do you live?
I'm in the Southeastern corner of Nebraska. You've all heard of "the sticks".... well this would be it. LOL
Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping?
 150
Do you have the gear or use an outfitterer?
I've got all the basics... and some of the bells and whistles
Preferred/Typical party size?
 Not over 4.
What length of trips do you do/available to do?
Average trip length would be 10-12 days
Preferred season?
My fav time to be in the park would be late Sept. Second choice would be mid-late May.
What % of the trip do you travel/base camp?
I like a little mix... travel in far enough to get beyond the first wave, and then spend a couple of days at an intersting spot... travel a day, spend a couple.... etc.
What difficulty level do you go for?
I'm up for some difficult travel, but only for the purpose of getting to an area I'd like to see... I don't need to steer toward difficult areas just for the difficulty. Nothing to prove here.
What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas?
Most familiar with the northern half of Quetico. My typical trip would be to see a few of the old familiar sites, and spend the rest of the time exploring new areas.

Paddling
Bow or stern preference?
I'll do either. I like to experience some of both in a trip.
What is your paddling rhythm?
 I'm a glider.
Paddle the shoreline or beeline?
Shoreline for me... that's where the action is.
How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in?
When the rollers start rollin... I STOP.
Do you have strong navigation/map skills?
I'm a compass guy. I still spend my fair share of time looking for portages.

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage?
 Double on a 2-man trip.
Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry?
Mostly on the back. I really like to keep 1 hand free.
How well do you handle the mountain goat portages?
My knees are getting tired. Don't mind some, but don't want to spend a whole trip on them.
How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs?
As long as I can touch bottom... whew.

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes?
I enjoy cooking, but don't need to do it all.
Fresh or dried foods?
I do my own dehydrating for most trips.
Cook over a fire, or over a stove?
Fire for most meals. Stove in the rain or breakfast on travel days.
Cook breakfast or breakfast bars?
Flexible here... I skip breakfast sometimes for a morning fish and then have a big lunch.
How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip?
I love a tasty fillet... I enjoy fish for breakfast/lunch or dinner probably 7 times in a 10 day trip
Hang the food pack or ground it?
 Hang
Axe? Saw? Both?
 Both
Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both)
Both... but not in the same day. LOL
On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water?
If there's big water for the day, I like to hit it EARLY. God forbid, I've even been known to set an alarm for these.

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing?
ALOT. Fishing for me goes hand in hand with exploring. I'm usually fishing reasonably close to the shoreline, and that's how I enjoy learning a new lake. For travel days, I like to take a break once in awhile and slow down for some trolling.
Which species do you like to go after?
I don't usually persue northerns. My favorite fishing is probably jigging for shy-bite walleyes. I like smallies on the fly rod. I love to vertical jig for lakers.
How much tackle to you bring?
2 regular size plano plastic boxes, and 1 small size. One nalgene jar of preserved minnows. Usually 3 rods/reels.
Are you good with a fillet knife?
I can get MOST of the meat off. LOL

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered?
I have a small tripping problem. LOL
Level of alcohol consumption?
Love my evening toddy. Not a big drinker.
Is photography high on your list?
I like to snap some pics. It is not my main focus. focus?
Do you like to go after pictographs?
I'll detour to take them in, but usually not my destination.
Do you like to go after waterfalls?
I like falls and rapids, partly for the beauty, and partly for the fishing.
Do you like to go after the northern lights?
I haven't caught good lights for several years. It's moving up on the priority list.

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you?
I think I've seen the worst of them. It did not ruin the trip for me, but the evening campfire just wasn't the same.
What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with?
Steady rain that continues for more than 2 days. UGH
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?
First discuss it... then I will bury you. LOL
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?
Can't think of anything.... maybe if there was smoke getting thick in the air, and a big glow on the horizon after dark. Oh dear.

BASICS

Where do you live?

Washington DC, relocating to Ely, MN in a few years

Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping?

About 120 in Quetico and area north of Quetico; 20-25 elsewhere

Do you have the gear or use an outfitter?

Have the gear EXCEPT canoe, no place to store one in DC and can’t carry on the plane.  Planning to get a whole fleet once I'm up in Ely

Preferred/Typical party size?

Two, with my usual paddling partner David.  When I get more time to paddle I want to try soloing and would also enjoy four-person trip or possibly up to six with others.

What length of trips do you do/available to do?

7-10 days is a great trip.  When I get more time to paddle I want to mix in more shorter and some longer trips.  My longest trip ever was 28 days, when I was 13

Preferred season?

I like September a lot, but basically want to be out whenever the water is liquid.

What % of the trip do you travel/base camp?

Usually travel every day.  Last trip we laid over at a couple sites two night and explored on the day between – will probably start doing that more.  I doubt I would ever want to base camp.

What difficulty level do you go for?

I like to work hard and take it easy at the same time.  I’m not happy (on canoe trips or anywhere else) if I don’t get a lot of physical exercise, but I also want to enjoy the beauty of the wilderness and study what’s going on there, so I would not like a trip that is just push-push-push (some days like that are okay).

What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas?

As an adult I’ve traveled mostly in south central and west Quetico.  As a kid I was mostly north of Quetico.  I always want to explore new areas (but still return to old favorites).  When I get more time for paddling I want to spend some time in the BW, either in less-used areas or in early/late season when it isn’t so crowded.

PADDLING

Bow or stern preference?

I paddle stern with David in the bow.  I don’t have anything against the bow and would be happy to paddle there some if my partner wanted the stern.

What is your paddling rhythm?

     Steady.

Paddle the shoreline or beeline?

Have done both, but recently leaning more towards shoreline.

How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in?

I would guess I’m kind of in the “average” range here

Do you have strong navigation/map skills?

     Yes

PORTAGING

Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage?

Double portage (two trips across) (except at end of trip when food pack is light).  When I was a kid we always did one trip across, and to even suggest two would have been wimpy heresy, but for me portages are now a welcome change of pace and a chance to see the interior because of doubling.  On recent shorter trips we have singled, and I would do that on a long trip if making good distance were the primary goal.

Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry?

There are always a few things (binoculars, maps) attached to the thwarts, and those will either be hand-carried or attached to the packs depending on portage length.

How well do you handle the mountain goat portages?

Pretty well.  I’m a marathon runner so the heart can deal with it, and I’m pretty careful where I put my feet when I have a canoe on me.

How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs?

I'm getting better at it, having learned that sinking in thigh-deep is really not that bad.

CAMPING STYLE

Would you rather cook or wash the dishes?

You mean I can’t just kick back and be served?  :-)

Fresh or dried foods?

Dried, but flexible.  Interested in home drying eventually, which could be the best of both worlds.

Cook over a fire, or over a stove?

     Stove.

Cook breakfast or breakfast bars?

Morning coffee is essential to my existence.

How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip?

I don’t fish, but I’d eat a bunch if my partners fished or I took it up.

Hang the food pack or ground it?

Hang, using an azalea pulley method.

Axe? Saw? Both?

     Saw, but rarely use it.

Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both)

I naturally tend to get out of the tent at the crack of dawn.  As long as I have my coffee, I’m happy if others are still sleeping.  Most nights we don't have a fire because we are in the tent early, but I love a campfire when we have one.

On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water?

Despite getting up at the crack of dawn, kind of slow getting on the water.

FISHING

How much time do you like to spend fishing?

Don’t fish, but wouldn’t mind taking it up.  It would never be the focus of a trip.

Which species do you like to go after?

     N/A.

How much tackle to you bring?

     None.

Are you good with a fillet knife?

I’m guessing I would be a menace to myself and all bystanders.

MISC

Do you have any medical conditions to be considered?

     Excellent health.

Level of alcohol consumption?

Like a shot or two of Maker’s Mark (or something similar) every night.

Are you a smoker?

     No.

Is photography high on your list?

     Pretty high.

Do you like to go after pictographs?

I like them but they are not central to my trip.

Do you like to go after waterfalls?

I like them but they are not central to my trip.

Do you like to go after the northern lights?

I love the northern lights but don’t know how to “go after” them.

PERSONALITY

If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you?

No, but they can put a damper on things if they are non-stop.

What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with?

Nonstop rain for days on end is not my favorite.  Long-term wind-bound is not my favorite.  But part of being out is accepting what nature dishes up.

If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?

Discuss it and hopefully resolve with compromise or realize it’s not that important.

Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?

     Hard to imagine any.

OTHER

I’m a pretty avid birder and can spend time a fair amount with my binoculars on trips.  I’m getting interested in tracking.  Want to go off the beaten track with some bushwhacking.

This is a short story, actually.  In 2000, I went to Quetico for a 9 day trip.  We took a float plane from Crane Lake, so we were stuck in the Q for 9 days whether we wanted to be there or not.  After finding our campsite, the friend who had invited me annouced that I had never even slept outside before and that I'd need alot of help (setting up tent, etc).  Everyone else in the group was not pleased and one of them predicted in his journal (I read this afterwards) that this was going to be the worst trip ever because of me.  The next day, we had 8 fish to fillet.... I filleted six in the time it took him to fillet two.  His journal entry that night was something like: "Although he has not been camping, he clearly has some skills for the outdoors".

Basics
Where do you live?  Cedar Falls, IA

Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping? 35

Do you have the gear or use an outfitterer? I have all gear but canoe - rent that.

Preferred/Typical party size? 2 to 4.

What length of trips do you do/available to do? 8 days

Preferred season? Fall

What % of the trip do you travel/base camp? I like to travel every other day. Camp on a site for two nights then move on. I like to fish and just spend time hiking around and relaxing, but still like to see new territory.

What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas? I've only been to the BWCA. I've gone to different areas each of 5 trips and plan to continue that.

Paddling
Bow or stern preference? Prefer solo.
What is your paddling rhythm? Depends completely on how sore my back is.

Paddle the shoreline or beeline? Mostly shoreline.

How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? Anything but the perfect storm.

Do you have strong navigation/map skills? I'd say beloew average.

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage? Strictly double.

Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? I usually have one hand occupied.

How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? I love them.

How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? I hate them.

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? Cook, by far.

Fresh or dried foods? A combination. I bring some fresh, dry some myself and buy just a couple of freeze dried items.

Cook over a fire, or over a stove? Stove almost exclusively. Only exceptions are first night steaks and lake trout.

Cook breakfast or breakfast bars? On travel days it's breakfast bars. On layover days it's eggs or oatmeal or pancakes.

How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip? Usually two for an eight-day trip.

Hang the food pack or ground it? Hide in blue barrels and pray.

Axe? Saw? Both? Saw

Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both) I like both, and will do both if I have time for an afternoon nap. If I have to choose one or the other it's wake at the crack of dawn. Love those early morning hours when my tripmates are still sleeping and I'm out paddling, taking pictures and fishing.

On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water? I say 7:30 or 8. In practice it's most often 9.

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing? I hit the early mornings and evening hard, then will go out for short excursions in the afternoons.

Which species do you like to go after? Lake trout are my favorite up there. Walleye come in second and smallies and pike about even for third place. I enjoy fishing for them all and try to plan trips where I can fish for all four.

Are you good with a fillet knife? Yep.

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered? Only a bad knee, which so far hasn't given me troubles in the park (knock on wood)

Level of alcohol consumption? On most trips I bring no alcohol. I do enjoy a drink around the campfire when it's there though.

Is photography high on your list? I love shooting pictures on trips, usually shoot 5 to 6 rolls. However, I only bring a point and shoot, haven't ever gotten ambitious enough to bring in my old SLR.

Do you like to go after pictographs? Not a priority.

Do you like to go after waterfalls? I love waterfalls.

Do you like to go after the northern lights? Yep.

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? They don't bother me too much. Make for interesting conversations.

What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? Extreme heat. I hate when you sweat your butt off on portages, then find yourself with a warm bottle of water.

If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? Discuss then bury.

Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home? If all my food were eaten by bears.

Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? Cook, by far.

Fresh or dried foods? A combination. I bring some fresh to supplement the outfitter's food.

Cook over a fire, or over a stove? Stove almost exclusively. Only exceptions are first night steaks, frying fish and baking lake trout in foil.

Cook breakfast or breakfast bars? Generally cook on layover days only.

How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip? Two or three in a week, plus some for appetizers.

Hang the food pack or ground it? Usually hang, but have hidden successfully.

Axe? Saw? Both? Both

Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both) More likely to be an early riser.

On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water? Between 7:30 and 9:00, depending on how fare we plan to go.

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing? As much as I can fit in.

Which species do you like to go after? Whatever's biting where I am. I enjoy catching smallies and northern and eating eyes and lake trout.

Are you good with a fillet knife? Mediocre.

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered? Not that have bothered me so far, except for high sensitivity to poison ivy, oak, etc.

Level of alcohol consumption? At most bring some wine for the first night steaks.

Is photography high on your list? Just enought for memories.

Do you like to go after pictographs? Not a priority.

Do you like to go after waterfalls? I love waterfalls.

Do you like to go after the northern lights? Yes, but don't often stay awake late enough.

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? They bother me, but don't ruin the trip.

What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? Extreme heat or constant rain.

If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? Discuss then bury.

Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home? Equipment damaged beyond repair, such as tents destroyed in a storm.

Basics
Where do you live? On the eastern plains of Colorado.

Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping? Probably somewhat over 250 nights.

Do you have the gear or use an outfitterer?  I’ve got my own gear, enough to outfit a group of 9.

Preferred/Typical party size? 4 or less, but I’ve made a lot of trips with larger groups.

What length of trips do you do/available to do? Usually 7-9 days. I’d love to make a longer trip someday.

Preferred season? Mid-late May or anytime in the summer.
What % of the trip do you travel/base camp? We usually mix it up. We don’t usually stay in one place all week.

What difficulty level do you go for? It depends who I’m going with. My arthritis dictates avoiding the mountain goat trails but anything else can be an option.

What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas? Both. I’m committed to the northern entry points of Quetico. I like to explore new water but I’ve been on most of at one time or another. I’ve got my favorite spots.

Paddling
Bow or stern preference? I’m the rear paddler.

What is your paddling rhythm? Steady. Don’t miss a stroke

Paddle the shoreline or beeline? Depends on the lake and the route. I paddle both but look for lee shores when the wind’s up.

How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? Comfortable? I’ve paddled in pretty nasty weather and always seemed to get where I’m going. I guess my comfort level is more about the people I’m responsible for. There have been some moments crossing Beaverhouse and Nym when the wind is from the west….

Do you have strong navigation/map skills? Depends who you ask. My son still harasses me for the time I got cocky on water I’d paddled before but in the distant past. I didn’t think I needed the map, and am still hearing about my insistence on “the right way”.Otherwise, when I do use a map my skills are adequate to keep us on course.

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage? Double

Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? Both. Some things are hand carried, but we try to minimize it.

How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? Not so well anymore. I use a cane (I mean a walking stick. I’m too young to need a cane). If you see a canoe working it’s way across a portage carrying a pack but having three legs, it’ll be me.

How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? They don’t bother me. You can always wade in and clean up at the end of the portage.

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? Cook. I’m a pretty good cook and a pretty lousy dishwasher.
Fresh or dried foods? Both

Cook over a fire, or over a stove? Always a fire unless there’s a fire ban on.

Cook breakfast or breakfast bars? We do both. Cook on layover days and bars on travel days.

How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip? Every day. We plan our menus accordingly.

Hang the food pack or ground it? Ground it. The only time we’ve had bear trouble was when it was hung.

Axe? Saw? Both? Both

Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both) It depends on the day (or night). I usually am up at dawn and sometimes stay up and listen and watch and sometimes just go to bed. The loons, the wolves, the fish jumping, the stars, the moonlight on still water. It doesn’t get much better than that.

On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water? No sense burnin’ daylight, pilgrim. Saddle up!

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing? A lot. It’s a major feature for me.

Which species do you like to go after? I love catching northerns, I love eating walleyes. Lakers are a never-say-die challenge and smallies are just plain fun.

How much tackle to you bring? 3 small, flat boxes that fit along the inside of my Duluth pack. I keep one handy under my seat while traveling in case I want to trail a bait through fishy spots.

Are you good with a fillet knife? Good enough. The fish haven’t complained.

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered? I’m diabetic with arthritic knees, but neither have ever caused me to alter a route. You just do it.

Level of alcohol consumption? Zero

Are you a smoker? No

Is photography high on your list? It hasn’t been but I’ve decided it’s going to be. I’ve seen too many spots I wish I could look at again, but probably never will. (alas!)

Do you like to go after pictographs? I don’t go out of my way for them but do look for them when they’re on my route.

Do you like to go after waterfalls? I love waterfalls

Do you like to go after the northern lights? I enjoy watching them, but once you’ve seen them they’re pretty much the same.

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? No. You just do it. The bugs don’t eat all that much.

What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? None are difficult to deal with. You take what comes, enjoy it and adapt your plans accordingly. Lightning over the water is a cool sight as long as you’re not on it.

If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? Depends on the problem. If it’s a matter of tolerating, then I just do it, no big deal., If it’s about the safety of someone in the group then you better get it straightened out and dealt with.

Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home? I’ve only cut one trip short. One of the people in my group developed a severe infection, spiked a fever and we brought him (and us) out in order to get him home to his doctor.

Basics
Where do you live?
Northern MN, about 1 hour south from either Ely or Crane Lake.
Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping?
 300
Do you have the gear or use an outfitter?
I have all the gear, many variations I’ve tried over the years, and make some of my own tarps and packs.
Preferred/Typical party size?
 Solo/two/sometimes 5-7 campers.
What length of trips do you do/available to do?
7 days is always too short, the average trip is 10 days.  Have often gone 12-14 days.  Wouldn’t mind going for 30-60 days given the chance.
Preferred season?
Mid-August to 3rd wk in September, and early-May through early-June.
What % of the trip do you travel/base camp?
 75% travel, 25% base camping.
What difficulty level do you go for?
I don’t mind difficult travel.  I kind of hate portages longer than 75 rods.  I will generally paddle in any conditions with a spray skirt on my kayak, but get tired of bucking the wind all day.  As I get older the difficulty bar is getting lower also.
What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas?
Most familiar with the southern third of the Quetico, the border areas, and from LaCroix northeast to Kawnipi and southeast to Saganaga and the Gunflint trail.  I like to cover ground and see new lakes, bays, rocks and creeks.

Paddling
Bow or stern preference?
Prefer solo paddling, and am proficient at stern canoe paddling.  Since solo traveling in a kayak, any canoe feels like I am trying to paddle a box through the water.
What is your paddling rhythm?
Steady, moderate pace, generally all day (5-7 hours).
Paddle the shoreline or beeline?
 Shoreline, always.
How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in?
Anything regarding wind, but would quickly loose energy if paddling into a raging head wind.  Often go in huge rollers as long as they are broadside or behind me.  The kayak is small enough to float on top of the big ones like a cork.  Nasty water on rivers I avoid, partly because I have no ability in white water, and partly not to take any chances when soloing.  Cold water and the chance of falling in, in early spring and late fall, is also a mitigating factor.
Do you have strong navigation/map skills?
Yes, I use a compass and usually both Fisher and McKenzie maps of my route.  On confusing lakes I note on the map where I am from time to time so I do not lose track of my progress.

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage?
Double and sometimes triple, especially early on when the food pack is heavy.
Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry?
The kayak requires small packs to fit in it, so at the portages I unload and put them in a large Duluth pack I have brought just for that purpose.   The more I can manage in the larger single packs, the better.
How well do you handle the mountain goat portages?
No problem, but my loads have to be lighter.  Doing them in the early morning avoids the mid-day heat and makes them seem easier.
How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs?
Takes me a moment at the edge to mentally prepare for diving in.  I am still agile enough to manage the log balancing acts.  I almost hate the 6” deep (shallow) muddy portage spots as much.

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes?
 Wash the dishes.
Fresh or dried foods?
Fresh and boxed foods from the grocery store.  Not much freeze dried.
Cook over a fire, or over a stove?
Fire almost exclusively, unless forced to take a stove due to drought.
Cook breakfast or breakfast bars?
When solo, coffee and gorp for breakfast.  Oatmeal for group breakfasts.  More elaborate fare if not traveling that day.
How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip?
I do not fish myself, but occasionally one of the group is successful and we will have fish at whatever meal of the day is convenient.
Hang the food pack or ground it?
Hang the pack except very occasionally when there is no suitable tree.  If grounding, then I lash it to a tree or rock not far from my tent, put stuff on it to make noise if it is disturbed, and go to bed with a stout beaver stick to fend off burglars.
Axe? Saw? Both?
 Both
Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both)
Usually to bed at dusk, and up shortly after daybreak.  I never carry a watch and depend on my natural rhythms to tell me what time it is.  I prefer traveling earlier in the day, so up and going as soon as possible most mornings.  The bugs often have a lot to do with the time I hit the tent at night.
On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water?
Generally find a group can get going by 8:00 a.m.

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing?
 None.
Which species do you like to go after?
I have caught some bass and walleye in my life.  I like to use a fly rod.
How much tackle do you bring?
 None.
Are you good with a fillet knife?
Not at all.  I do know how to disassemble a raw chicken tho.

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered?
55 year old body.  Serious bee sting allergy (take an Epi-pen).
Level of alcohol consumption?
 Almost none.
Is photography high on your list?
I like to have pictures of the trip, but tend not to take time to use the camera.
Do you like to go after pictographs?
I like to see them when available, but they are not my destination.
Do you like to go after waterfalls?
Yes, usually great scenery.  Often also good campsites.  I like to camp at the top to cut down on moisture and noise, far enough away that the noise does not get annoying.
Do you like to go after the northern lights?
Yes, but I often sleep through the best shows.

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you?
I only mind the bugs if they are particularly persistent in biting.  Then I may retreat to my tent and refuse to come out until the bug conditions change.  Generally the bugs are not too bad, or the conditions will change soon enough.
What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with?
Wet and cold weather at the same time.  Wet is okay if I am warm enough and have an extra set of dry clothes and a dry sleeping bag to console me.  Cold is not too bad if it is also dry weather.
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?
Discuss.  Altho I am stubborn and it will take some convincing to get me to compromise or bury it.
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?
Dealing with camping companions who grouse, cry and whine about the conditions or with someone who is picking on, or provoking another of the party continually, making them miserable and the rest of us uncomfortable.
;)

Basic
What difficulty level do you go for?
What ever it takes to see new parts of the park, I will bushwack.
What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas?
Prairie Portage is our usual entry into Quetico but I have entered from the central portion of the park.

Paddling
Bow or stern preference?
I’m a tall guy and prefer stern but I’m willing to trade off.
What is your paddling rhythm?
Steady.
Paddle the shoreline or beeline?
That depends on circumstances, who I’m paddling with, lake conditions, and wind direction.
How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in?
That depends on with whom I’m paddling with. I have paddled in some tough conditions with confidence but prefer not to paddle into a head wind with rough waters.
Do you have strong navigation/map skills?
Adequate with a compass and map.

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage?
Usually double, I have tripled, and would prefer to single.

How well do you handle the mountain goat portages?
I also backpack.
How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs?

I always hang, losing the food pack would be a reason to end a trip early.
Axe? Saw? Both?
Both.
Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both)
That really depends on the day, if it is raining I will retire early. I really enjoy a fire nothing says out of doors as the smell of smoke and the crackle of a fire.

No later than 9 am.

My routes are based on seeing different parts of the park but I certainly won’t avoid them.

See above.
Do you like to go after the northern lights?
We will set camp to face north or have a north facing outcrop when they are available.

Personality

That’s why I prefer to travel in mid September to avoid mosquitos, ticks and black flies.
What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? Real cold/snow.
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?
Discuss it, I can be tolerant and haven’t drowned anyone yet.

What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? 10 days of snow and sleet would be a bummer but I come prepared with quality gear

photography...im a point and shoot guy, i get 5 or 6 good pics out of a roll.  i shoot WAY too many duplicate shots.

pictos...never seen one.  i will this may.  i hope i dont find the need to kick any rappelers butts when i do (crooked lake)

waterfalls...the highlight of my trips!

northern lights...some nights i see them in stereo (see previous alcohol question)  kidding....kinda  :)

bad bugs...no such thing, only bad preperation for bad bugs

annoying weather...only when its too windy to fish

group problems...ive never experienced one, knocking on wood now

what would end a trip early...besides of injury, i cant think of one

now id like to propose a new question to be asked on this profile...
"what would you like to change about the way you currently canoe trip?"

for me....LESS FOOD and LESS GEAR!     and less paranoia about finding an open campsite.

this was fun!      Jan

BASICS:

Where do you live?

We live in La Crosse, Wisconsin

Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping?

165 + in the BWCAW for me, Amy 10 days. We both have plenty more else where. We live on the Mississippi and all islands are free game.

Do you have the gear or use an outfitter?

We own all our own stuff, more than we need actually. It helps to outfit the novices that we sometimes take with us. We are very picky about who we introduce to the BWCAW.

Preferred/Typical party size?

1-4

What length of trips do you do/available to do?

Anywhere from 7 - 15 days

Preferred season?

Spring, usually around the first of June.

What % of the trip do you travel/base camp?

Depends on the trip/people. Sometimes we move everyday and others find us camping in the same site for days. A lot of it depends on the paddling ability of those with my girlfriend (Amy) and I. Weather can be a big factor as well.

What difficulty level do you go for?

This also depends on the people with me on the trip. If it just Amy and myself, we will try anything.

What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas?

South Wilder is like our honeymoon lake. It is fairly secluded because of it's end of the chain positioning and therefore not as well traveled. We are always trying a new area. Each year we try to go somewhere else.

PADDLING:

Bow or stern preference?

I generally paddle stern. Amy is too light for me to sit in the front.

What is your paddling rhythm?

Steady as she goes.

Paddle the shoreline or beeline?

Depends on what we are doing and where we are going. Also dependent on weather conditions and time restraints.

How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in?

I will paddle through anything, if I have to. I do not do it just for fun though. I defer to the other members of my paddle group, in this regard, they just might have more sense. Amy hates the windy days.

Do you have strong navigation/map skills?

Have map and compass will travel! This is not to say that I never mess it up but I do pretty well.

PORTAGING:

Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage?

Double trips, for my canoe and Amy. Other paddlers in my groups have caused triple and more.

Do you carry everything on your back, or a lot of hand carry?

Everything on our backs.

How well do you handle the mountain goat portages?

We do very well with these, thankfully.

How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs?

Not as well as I would like to, I struggle and Amy has it even worse.

CAMPING STYLE:

Would you rather cook or wash the dishes?

I cook, Amy cleans. Just like at home.

Fresh or dried foods?

The first few days maybe fresh food but I could not imagine carrying enough for 12 days! We dry all of our own. Freeze dried is too pricey for us! We would rather buy better gear than spend it on food. If anyone is interested in my methods of drying, or recipes please IM me. I love to cook and I love to share my "knowledge" of cooking!

Cook over a fire, or over a stove?

Heating water is mostly what we do, due to the dried food thing. In camp we usually have some water on the fire all the time. For in transit lunches we use the stove. On those rained in days the stove gets set up in the vestibule and is our main cooking instrument.

Cook breakfast or breakfast bars?

Breakfast is usually some form of instant oatmeal, grits, malto meal, cream of wheat...

How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip?

In a ten day trip, usually 2. I am not a big fish eater. I love to catch them though! Catch and release is the norm for us.

Hang the food pack or ground it?

We hang the food. Although I love seeing the bears, I do not relish the idea of having to survive on fish for the rest of the trip!

Axe, Saw, or Both?

Both, I like to cut wood into length with the saw and split some down for kindling.

Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or
both)

On a lot of the trips, I have found that in early June, it rains in the mid mornings... I will sit around the fire for hours and then get up at the crack of dawn to fish for a few hours before the rain sets in. Amy like to sleep in a bit so it works out great for us.

On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water?

The crack of dawn is my preference, but I rarely get it! As I said. Amy likes to sleep in a bit.

FISHING:

How much time do you like to spend fishing?

Given the chance I would fish from sun up to sundown. Amy likes to explore the woods and things too, so I split time between fishing and exploring.

Which species do you like to go after?

Everything that will bite!

How much tackle to you bring?

I carry a Flambeau "Quick Draw:" bag that holds (3) 11x7", adjustable organizer slot, boxes and one 3x4" box for hooks and sinkers.. It is quite compact and holds a ton of tackle. Loaded it only weighs 3 lbs. It keeps my tackle very organized. It also has a spare line pocket and a shoulder carrying strap. I absolutely love it.

Are you good with a fillet knife?

I am quite good with one, thank you!

MISC:

Do you have any medical conditions to be considered?

None.

Level of alcohol consumption?

We bring a smaller sized hip flask of whiskey and it usually returns to the car half full.

Are you a smoker?

No.

Is photography high on your list?

We takes photos but we are not pros!

Do you like to go after pictographs?

This June trip will be our first. We have not based trips around them but may in the future. We respect the Natives and First people a lot. I am part Tsalagi (Cherokee) and am just learning about the heritage that I should have always been taught.

Do you like to go after waterfalls?

We do not base trips around them but if they are in the area we are certain to check them out.

Do you like to go after the northern lights?

The Northern lights are a huge draw for us. Without them it would not be the same, but, we would not quit going if they were to suddenly cease to exist.

PERSONALITY:

If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you?

I am luckily not a target for bugs! WOO WOO. Amy on the other hand is. Until we bought her a head net, things were rough on her. Now she enjoys the bug freeness of netting.

What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with?

I have come to deal with weather very well. Years of canoe camping and backpacking have taught me to appreciate all seasons and all weather. Amy had a problem with rain until she bought a good rain suit. The cold is hard on her, she is a tiny little thing of 102 lbs. Staying warm is hard for her.

If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?

Lets get it out there and deal with it! No reason to ruin a trip. Very little can not be worked out!

Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?

I would never willingly pull out of a trip! I have, in consideration for some of my novice companions, though. It seems like no matter how much I stress the need for this or that, someone leaves something crucial behind, or can not afford it. Like good rain gear. This can make the trip rough for some.

Do you have strong navigation/map skills? yes

Portaging
double portage--I appreciate those walks in the woods for the flora&fauna (except the bugs).
Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? Pretty well-organized after many trips--don't hand-carry much but fishing rods&paddles (velcro-strapped together).

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? We only go when the bugs are bad--less people/more fish
What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? wind
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? We have all known each other for at least 30 years--if we couldn't handle each other's idiosyncracies we wouldn't still be going every year.

Basics
Where do you live?
Beautiful downtown Weldon Spring Missouri (pronounced miss-ur-rah)
Nestled in the armpit of the suburban sprawl that is St. Louis
Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping?
~50 (~30 of these are solo tripping nights)
Do you have the gear or use an outfitterer?
I have now accumulated everything but the canoe.
How many shopping days till christmas?
Preferred/Typical party size?
ONE. I like to be completely alone in the wilderness.
What length of trips do you do/available to do?
5-7 days. Want to do at least a 10 day next year.
Preferred season?
Early spring(mid-May), Late fall(mid-Oct, when moose season is winding down)
What % of the trip do you travel/base camp?
I'll take both please. A few travel days to get to a remote camping site. Then sit and
enjoy the solitude of the wilderness for a few days before I have to paddle out.
What difficulty level do you go for?
I go for places which offer seclusion and beauty. If it's difficult to get to, then the
 seclusion is about guaranteed.

Paddling
Bow or stern preference?
er, uh... I sit in the middle.
What is your paddling rhythm?
Sprint. Peddle to the metal. Balls out. Glide when needed.
Repeat as necessary until destination is reached.
Paddle the shoreline or beeline?
Shoreline mostly, I get nervous in a tippy solo canoe, unless the lake is like glass.
How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in?
Nasty? I'm staying put with a cocktail, camera, and my journal.
Do you have strong navigation/map skills?
What's a compass? I get from point A to point B by reading the map, watching the shoreline
for landmarks and knowing where I am. Easy to say, but I'm a dork. I steer clear of them
hugh lakes with a zillion islands if I can manage it. (yes, I carry and can operate a compass,
and yes I've found myself temporarily unaware of my position on a couple of occassions.)

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage?
Make mine a double please. More than two times across and the portage can get boring, especially
those 320 rod ones which I always seem to gravitate toward. Something to do with seeking seclusion.
Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry?
I like two free hands. I have a tendancy to wobble and fall down. Also like to
be able to operate a camera if something interesting pops up, slithers by, or runs
 across my path.
How well do you handle the mountain goat portages?
Just fine thank you. 300lb squats at the gym during hard water season make most hills a
 non-issue.
How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs?
As long as my boot stays attached, I'm a happy camper. I don't come out here to keep my
Eddie Bauer designer camp boots clean and shiny. Actually, I don't own any Eddie Bauer
designer camp boots, just a pair of well worn Redwings, and they stay wet the entire
trip. Something to do with how I learned to care for a canoe early in life. Last year
I rented a canoe which the outfitter had just acquired. It still had the owner's manual
taped to the thwart when I went to put it in the water. I was embarassed to see even a
few tiny scratches on it when I brought it back.

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes?
er, uh, if I don't do both, neither gets done. Same goes for setting up the tent, fly, and
 cutting firewood.
Fresh or dried foods?
A mix. I use my own designed cold sack for fresh. Store bought freeze-dried is handy.
I like a steak first night out. Hot dogs are a tasty change after a few days out.
Cook over a fire, or over a stove?
Stove always, 'cept for the steak. The fire pit is for cocktail hour ambience.
Cook breakfast or breakfast bars?
Cook, unless I'm in a hurry.
How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip?
I don't fish. I prefer barnyard animals when I eat flesh, and taking the critters out of the
lake just to throw 'em back only annoys them.
Hang the food pack or ground it?
 Bear can... grounded.
Axe? Saw? Both?
 Saw.
Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both)
I like a nice fire, and a cocktail of Crown Royal and lake water at sunset.
If cocktail hour drags on late into the evening, well... that kinda stuff just happens.
Either way, I'm usually up early, even on lay-over days. I can sleep when I get home.
On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water?
Up by 6, in the water by 8 when the weather permits.
If there's time (weather doesnt appear to be turning bad), I'll cook first.

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing?
None. See above. Just that much less gear I have to slug along.

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered?
If I had a medical condition, I would consider it.
Level of alcohol consumption?
Some is good, more's better, too much is usually just about enough.
Is photography high on your list?
 Yes. Digital.
Do you like to go after pictographs?
 Aint been there yet.
Do you like to go after waterfalls?
The sound of running water always makes me want to go.
Do you like to go after the northern lights?
I usually get up to go in the middle of the night. Something to do
 with the cocktails before bedtime.

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you?
Nope. They're all just part of the experience.
What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with?
 Wind. Wind, and Wind.
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?
 Fix it, discuss it later.
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and

head home?
Once non-stop wind and rain for 4 days straight made me crazy and I headed out early.
I'll never let that happen again. And I no longer spend any daytime in my tent when it's raining.
I like to sit out in the rain and enjoy just being there.

Basics
Where do you live? Western NY State, east of Niagara Falls
Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping?
couple hundred, dating back to late '70s; 75-100 in Quetico
Do you have the gear or use an outfitterer?
My own gear and canoes; use outfitter for bunkhouse before and after, plus a tow to PP
Preferred/Typical party size? 2-6
What length of trips do you do/available to do?;
I drive almost two days to get to Ely, so I want to be in Quetico at
least 7 days; prefer 10-14; probably do a solo this summer due to lack of available partners
Preferred season? Time contraints limit me to late July through August;
What % of the trip do you travel/base camp? have done both, but tend to be a traveler with a layover day or two
What difficulty level do you go for? moderate; have been known to push it when necessary, but I'm not into "going survival" either
What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas? north of PP; always looking to go new places...

Paddling
Bow or stern preference? stern
What is your paddling rhythm? steady as needed
Paddle the shoreline or beeline? beeline if good conditions; use islands and points to avoid wind as necessary;
How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? moderate chop, but I'll park my keister in camp rather than do something stupid; no hurry...
Do you have strong navigation/map skills? I favor using map and landmarks, but bring a compass; have been "misplaced temporarily", but that only adds to the fun;

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage? double usually, except last few days when food pack is lighter
Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? most on back; try not to carry anything but fishing pole
How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? I don't sprint anymore.
How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? I don't seek them out, but I cope. Not real fond of the hip-deep stuff, but it makes everyone look funnier than hell!

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? Either. My preference, actually, is everyone for himself.
Fresh or dried foods? Fresh first night or two, then boxed/re-packed. Fresh fish is nice...
Cook over a fire, or over a stove? Stove, except for 1st night steak
Cook breakfast or breakfast bars? both; pancakes are my favorite;
gotta at least have hot tea, though
How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip? whatever I can get

Hang the food pack or ground it? usually hang, but I am nuts about a clean camp so I've been known to ground it; even tented it a couple times(ooh, horrors!)
Axe? Saw? Both? usually neither; if I can't break it, I don't use it
Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both)I like a campfire, but usually not into the wee hours;
On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water? crack of dawn, to beat the wind

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing? couple hours morn & eve
Which species do you like to go after? whatever is dumb enough to hit on whatever I'm pitchin'
How much tackle to you bring? two small plastic boxes
Are you good with a fillet knife? ah...it's not a pretty sight when I'm finished; fillets end up more like nuggets; if someone else volunteers, I don't argue

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered? nothing fatal so far...beat cancer a couple years ago.
Level of alcohol consumption? A liter of Bombay Blue Sapphire per trip, which I mix 50/50 with Crystal Light iced tea in a mug.  Two or so TeaBombs per evening brings out the color in the sunset and enlivens the conversation, even on solo trips. One must be civilized, yes?
Are you a smoker? no, although a cigar (aka steaming turd) has been used on occasion to ward off man-eating skeeters
Is photography high on your list? I try to shoot 30-40 shots per trip, but I'm no artist. I just want to preserve memories. Helps to pass those long winters...
Do you like to go after pictographs? If they're there, I'll respectfully inspect. But I don't make them a destination.
Do you like to go after waterfalls? Not necessarily, but I do love a good soak in Louisa Falls.
Do you like to go after the northern lights? not really

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? nah. Haven't needed bug dope much.
What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? Cold rain more than 1 day. But it sure makes the sunshine extra special.
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? Discuss tactfully; bury. Never really ran into this...
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home? Mushroom cloud on the horizon? ;

Basics
Where do you live? Eagan, MN
Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping? 50-75 over 10 years or so
Do you have the gear or use an outfitterer?  My own gear
Preferred/Typical party size? One canoe - a lot of the point for me is solitude with a good friend or two!
What length of trips do you do/available to do? I would prefer to go longer, but small children limit me to around 5 days (my own choice - my wonderful wife would certainly allow me to go for longer trips!)
Preferred season? Before Memorial Day or around Labor Day - I like the cool weather
What % of the trip do you travel/base camp? 50/50 - I like to move until we've found a good fishing lake with a nice campsite. Sometimes that means moving every day, sometimes we'll base camp for most of a trip!
What difficulty level do you go for? Anything that gets us to a quiet lake with decent fishing & at least one loon - mostly that means moderate (amazing that you can get away from the louder folks up there with a single 100 rod portage most of the time!)
What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas? None in particular - we've been several parts of the BWCA - I have a map on the wall of my cube at work with the routes we've done marked. I'd like to add a lot more ink to that map!

Paddling
Bow or stern preference? I'm the power in the bow since we usually use a friend's canoe - but I've now bought my own & am getting the hang of the stern. Doesn't matter to me!
What is your paddling rhythm? Relaxed - except in a headwind
Paddle the shoreline or beeline? Shoreline when nasty, beeline when calm
How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? Depends on the experience level of my partner...anywhere from moderate to very rough
Do you have strong navigation/map skills? Well, I've never failed to find my way back.

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage? Double. I'm not in a hurry.
Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? Both. I try to get most of it on my back.
How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? I'll survive them.
How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? I wear sandals 100% of the time in the BWCA so I handle them by trying not to go in past my thighs & washing off my feet at the next put-in

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? I hate washing dishes in the wilderness. Pretty much the only dishes we normally create are for a fish fry - otherwise it's cold food & boiling water for freeze-dried meals
Fresh or dried foods? Fresh fish & freeze dried
Cook over a fire, or over a stove? Stove.
Cook breakfast or breakfast bars? Bars.
How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip? Probably every other night.

Hang the food pack or ground it? Hang it high.
Axe? Saw? Both? Neither - we rarely make fires in the BWCA.
Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? Wake early. We're usually too beat to mess with a fire. Laying on a nice flat rock & watching the stars is simpler & often more fun.
On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water? Whenever we're properly motivated.

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing? A lot!
Which species do you like to go after? Mostly pike & bass...since I'm a terrible walleye fisherman.
How much tackle to you bring? Lots of plastics & a small plastic box of lures
Are you good with a fillet knife? Good...hmm. I get the job done, no one gets hurt (except the poor fish) & it tastes good. However, speed is not one of my strengths for filleting a fish.

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered? Nope.
Level of alcohol consumption? At home yes, in the BWCA no. Although I'm contemplating inventing a powdered beer concoction.  :)
Are you a smoker? No.
Is photography high on your list? No, but I always regret not taking more pics while I'm in the BWCA.
Do you like to go after pictographs? I haven't been in an area with pictographs to date (that I know of).
Do you like to go after waterfalls? Absolutely. Love them.
Do you like to go after the northern lights? Love them too.

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? No. But that's part of the reason we stick to the book-ends of summer.
What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? None! Our best trip featured a high of 55 & constant rain. Although if I encountered a 90 degree day with high humidity, that might make me grumpy!
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? Discuss it. I like to talk, listen, argue, & debate. Nothing that gets buried ever stays that way in the long run!
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home? I honestly don't know. Losing the canoe? Finding a dead body in a campsite? A plague of locusts?

I'm heading back into the BW on Aug. 12th after a 5 year hiatus and can't wait to get back.  I hope to see you there.

Where do you live? Baltimore, MD via TX and St. Paul, MN
Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping? 30ish

Preferred/Typical party size?  4-8  Prefer 4-6
What length of trips do you do/available to do? Mostly 5 days but will shoot for 7 or 8 next year
Preferred season?  Late summer is the only option right now due to work schedule.  I also prefer it for the warmer water.
What % of the trip do you travel/base camp?  I like to do most of my travel on the first day and then base camp/move once or twice the rest of the time.
What difficulty level do you go for?  I would prefer hard but it depends on the group.
What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas?  I really like heading into EP #16 and am doing it again next week.  However, I also like getting up into Q-- Namakan river/Thompson lake area.

Paddling
Bow or stern preference?  Stern, almost always.
What is your paddling rhythm?  Depends on my Bow
Paddle the shoreline or beeline?  beeline, the faster to camp the better.
How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in?  Been in 6 foot waves on LLC before, wouldn't call it comfortable but it was still bearable in the Voyageur I was in.

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage?  I've never done anything but single.
Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? Back---I just strap everything on.  But I've never soloed so that would be a different story.
How well do you handle the mountain goat portages?  Can't say that I've run into too many of them.
How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs?  Nice change of pace.  As long as I don't run into too many consecutively.

Camping Style

Do you like to go after the northern lights?  I never expect them but love to see them.  They can absolutely MAKE a trip.

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you?  Nothing can ruin a trip, other than a serious injury resulting in having to leave early.
What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with?  Was in a blowdown about 10 years back, I'd say that was difficult.  Trees crashing down around the tent in the middle of the night is a bit hair-raising.  It sounded like a freight train making its way through the forest before it hit.
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?  Let's get it out there and resolve it.
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?  Absolutely nothing.

Basics
Where do you live?
-Edison, NJ. I also spend much of my time at my upstate NY cabin that I built this year.

Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping?
-I couldn't even begin to guess. I canoe 40-50 days annually, that's day and overnight trips. I used to be more comfortable in a sleeping bag than a bed, but age and a new mattress has changed that.

Do you have the gear or use an outfitterer?
-My own gear... 4 or 5 times over.

Preferred/Typical party size?
-About 4 or so in solo canoes. Otherwise solo.

What length of trips do you do/available to do?
-I've done everything from daytrips to a 6 month expedition. Currently I could manage a 3-4 day trip if a get together was in the works.

Preferred season?
-Spring/Fall

What % of the trip do you travel/base camp?
-Travel pretty much every day. I always want to base camp, but for one reason or another, never get to.

What difficulty level do you go for?
-Intermediate. If you mean whitewater, I don't generally go over 2+

What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to
spend time there or explore new areas?
-Still trying to make my first trip to the BW/Q. Would like to join a group solo with folks that at are familiar with areas. The whole permit thing confuses me...

Paddling
Bow or stern preference?
-Solo only

What is your paddling rhythm?
-There's really no rhythm, rhyme or reason to my paddling. I paddle relatively constant, but not haphazardly.

Paddle the shoreline or beeline?
-Somewhat shoreline, occasional beeline between points

How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in?
- I've paddled during an unexpected microburst and it was one of the most memorable trips for me. Whitecaps will keep me on shore

Do you have strong navigation/map skills?
-Average, but I love to follow the map and look for landmarks... it's kinda like following a treasure map.

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage?
-Single, I like to hike, but I enjoy the canoeing more.

Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry?
-On my back: All in the pack or canoe

How well do you handle the mountain goat portages?
-Depends on how well rested I am. The older i get, the more rest breaks I need

How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs?
-As long as I can get my boots back!

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes?
-Cook

Fresh or dried foods?
-Fresh first night, dried after that

Cook over a fire, or over a stove?
-Stove, except for the occasional kabob or fresh fish

Cook breakfast or breakfast bars?
-Cook 50% of the time

How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip?
-Not more than one or two

Hang the food pack or ground it?
-Ground it in a bear barrel or keep it in the tent (no lectures please)

Axe? Saw? Both?
-I like to keep it light, so just a saw, but occasionally the axe also

Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both)
-Spend at least a few hours around the campfire and get up by 7:00

On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water?
-Between 8:00 & 9:00

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing?
-Sometimes after camp is setup

Which species do you like to go after?
-Any

How much tackle to you bring?
-If fly fishing, only some flies and leaders. If spin fishing, a small tackle box

Are you good with a fillet knife?
-Average

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered?
-No

Level of alcohol consumption?
-Very occasional glass of wine

Are you a smoker?
-no

Is photography high on your list?
-yes

Do you like to go after pictographs?
-yes

Do you like to go after waterfalls?
-yes

Do you like to go after the northern lights?
-yes

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you?
-no

What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with?
I've paddled everything from blizzards to 110 degree days and even a hurricane once (dumb).

If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?
-Discuss it

Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?
-Family member crisis. Irritating people whom I am dependent on for a ride home.

How well do you handle the mountain goat portages?

How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs?
I hate it. I risk hopping on slippery rocks to avoid finding out if there's a bottom or not.

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes?
I'd rather cook. And for that matter I'd rather cook in the bakepacker so no one has to wash a crusty pan.
Fresh or dried foods?
Next year I'm doing my own dehydrating. I'm starting with what's in my garden this summer. :D
Cook over a fire, or over a stove?
 stove

What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with?
 Windbound... :(
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?
Depends on the problem. A rational camping/packing/paddling problem, let's fix it. Personal problem... Where's my poop scoop!
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?
I've been tempted due to party members having emotional meltdowns/adult temper tantrums, but it hasn't happened yet. Next year it's just us (me, hubby and son). Hopefully that eliminates past issues with other paddlers.

What is your paddling rhythm? in my head- automatic, really.

How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? pretty nasty- the nastier the better! I get a sick thrill from scaring my sternman in big waves:)

Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage? double, always with the intention of doing it in a single- where do all those packs come from??
Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? mostly on my back, paddles in hand, camera at the ready
How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? like a mountain goat
How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? try to plan my trip to hit these in hot, dry weather to avoid said boot-sucking

Axe? Saw? Both? both
Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both) definitely sit around the campfire all night- where else do you get views of the stars like that  (4 years in a row was in Quetico for the peak of the Perseids- incredible!)
On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water? 8-9ish- my trips are pretty relaxed, schedule wise.  that said, I'm not a slow paddler:)

What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? none really- just come prepared.  Being windbound for 3 days though gets a bit tiresome
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? discuss
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home? nothing really- its an adventure, and I love adventure!

Basics
Where do you live?
Toronto - don't hate me for it
Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping?
 200+ over 20 years
Do you have the gear or use an outfitterer?
Completely self-sufficient, but there's always gear to be bought.
Preferred/Typical party size?
No preference so long as I'm going.  I usually organise trips and buddies are always welcome to join if they want to, logistics permitting.
What length of trips do you do/available to do?
At least one week long trip a year.  At least a weekend each month from ice-out to ice-up.  These days about 20 nights a year.
Preferred season?
Early spring, before blackflies.  When the trout are on.
What % of the trip do you travel/base camp?
A rest day every 3rd day is planned for week long trips.  Anything 4 days or less is base camp.
What difficulty level do you go for?
Solo I plan for 10-15km/travel day.  Tandem 15-20.
What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas?
Totally new to Quetico.  Been all over APP & some Temagami & Crown Land.

Paddling
Bow or stern preference?
Stern, but flexible.  Being heavy-set, and a solo paddler, and never having a paddling partner in my weight class able to stern I usually get put in the stern for various reasons.
Recently learned a whitewater term, Fat Man Bails.
What is your paddling rhythm?
Depends on the day, my mood, sleep, aches & pains.  My strokes are too long and I know it.
Paddle the shoreline or beeline?
Depends on the distance for the day and the conditions.  Not afraid of open water, not stupid about it either.
How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in?
Solo about 1.5' of chop.  Tandem with the right bowman, I'll try anything.
Do you have strong navigation/map skills?
Decent sense of direction.  Not the best map/compass skills.  Any tromping around is done with a gps waypoint on camp and breadcrumbs as I go.

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage?
Double pretty much always.  I like the walk back, it's when I get to see things.
Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry?
Mostly on the back. I really like to keep at least 1 hand free.

Cook.  Too lazy after dinner to wash dishes.  A big fan of eating out of the pot.
Fresh or dried foods?
I do my own dehydrating for most trips.
First day is usually something fresh over the fire.  Ribs or wings or hot dogs or...
Cook over a fire, or over a stove?
 Stove.
Some recipies demand a fire.  Grilled burritos, the aforementioned ribs/wings/saussages.
If a fire is on, there's usually a pot on too for coffee/tea/washing/drinking.
Cook breakfast or breakfast bars?
Sick and freaking tired of oatmeal.  Looking for alternatives.  Beans & rice is good.
How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip?
As many as possible.  Fresh fish is the best!
Hang the food pack or ground it?
Hang.  I'm more worried about little critters than I am worried about bears.  I like to throw rope.
Axe? Saw? Both?
 8" pruning saw.
My knife has a full tang is great for batoning wood.  I don't need 5# of pig iron weighing me down.
Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both)
Both.  Nothing like falling asleep in front of the caveman TV and waking up to dawn light and songbirds.
On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water?
On the water by 10am though night-owl partners often ruin these plans and it's the crack of noon before we're loaded.
I hate travelling in the heat of the day.
I have set an alarm for big water crossings.

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing?
As much as possible.  Fishing is 30% of why I'm out there.
Which species do you like to go after?
Favourite is brook trout followed closely by whatever's biting my lure.
Summer flipping for bass while lazily floating from structure to structure.
How much tackle to you bring?
 1 rod/reel.  Typically 8# test.
12-24 various lures.  A couple packs of stinky rubber worms, I like purple.
Are you good with a fillet knife?
Gut 'em scale 'em and cook 'em!  Trout have no scales to worry about.
I should be better with a knife, I have formal cooking training.

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered?
 Nope.
Level of alcohol consumption?
Not a drinker, but I can be if the situation calls for it.
Is photography high on your list?
Oh yes!  Bummed that my camera broke.  Can't decide on what to replace it with.
Do you like to go after pictographs?
I'm keen to see some, never have.
Do you like to go after waterfalls?
Yeah, waterfalls & rapids are awesome.  I do not like to sleep next to them.
Do you like to go after the northern lights?
I haven't caught lights for decades. It's high on the priority list.

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you?
Sucks, but what are you gonna do?
What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with?
 Wind sucks.
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?
First discuss it... then I will bury you. LOL
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?
Mood.  I've been out there and after a few days simply felt like going home.  Packed up, went home.  It's my vacation.  If I don't want to be there then I should go somewhere I want to be.

What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas?   I'm most familiar with the northern and eastern portions of the Quetico.

Paddling

Note:  This is cut and pasted from the Inukshuk Forum.  Not sure if it contains all the details that some other posts have.  Am interested in potential solo partners for a September, 2011 trip in the BW.

Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? MOSTLY ON  BACK, AND HAVE DEVELOPED A WORKABLE SYSTEM FOR CARRYING A FEW THINGS IN HAND.

How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? I CAN DO THEM.  I HANDLE THEM BEST WHEN THEY ARE IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR.

How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? BEEN WET UP TO ARSE MORE THAN ONCE.  NOT MY PREFERENCE, BUT IF THERE ARE FISH OR OTHER SIGNIFICANT ATTRACTIONS INVOLVED, I CAN BE PERSUADED

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? WILLING TO DO EITHER AS LONG AS THE PARTNER WILLINGLY DOES THE OTHER.

Fresh or dried foods?  PREFER FRESH.  DON'T LIKE FREEZE-DRIED MUCH, BUT OTHER DRIED FOODS WORK VERY WELL.

On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water? AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.

Which species do you like to go after? THE BIG FOUR, WHATEVER IS BITING.

How much tackle to you bring? A MANAGEABLE AMOUNT.

Are you good with a fillet knife? PRETTY GOOD.

Level of alcohol consumption?  A MEASURED RATION (3 OZ OR SO) PER DAY.

Is photography high on your list?  YES.

Do you like to go after pictographs? THE ONES I'VE SEEN (ONLY A FEW) DON'T STRIKE ME AS WORTH GOING OUT OF THE WAY.

Do you like to go after waterfalls? AGAIN, IF THEY ARE ON THE ROUTE, GREAT.  THEY CAN BE VERY FISHY.

Do you like to go after the northern lights?   NOT SURE HOW TO DO THAT, EXCEPT TO GO NORTH.

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? I PREFER TO TRAVEL AT TIMES WHEN BUGS ARE FEWER OR ABSENT.

What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with?  COLD AND RAIN TOGETHER.  WOULD RATHER IT JUST SNOWED.

If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? BETTER TO TALK ABOUT IT.

Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?  GIVEN THE EFFORT TO GET AWAY AND GET UP THERE, VERY FEW THINGS THAT I CAN IMAGINE.

Other pertinent info?  I'M INTERESTED IN FINDING COMPETENT SOLO PARTNERS FOR A HUNTER'S ISLAND LOOP IN THE 2012-2014 WINDOW.  I WILL LIKELY BE IN ELY SOMETIME IN SEPT 2011 AND WOULD WELCOME THE CHANCE TO MEET POTENTIAL PARTNERS.  WILL POST AGAIN BEFORE MY NEXT TRIP.

Inukshuk Profile

Basics
Where do you live? I live full time in an RV (40’ motor home) so wherever the RV is sitting when the sun goes down is home. Winter in Florida typically. Summer of 2018 will be split between Gunflint Trail (mid-June to mid-July) and Ely from mid-July to approximately November 1st.

Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping?
50+ but not for a few years. Last trip was a 4 day solo kayak the length of the AuSable river in Michigan. I was in the Army for 20 years, I am used to camping.

Do you have the gear or use an outfitter? At this time, fall of 2017, I have some gear. I will have all my own personal gear by spring of 2018. Do not have a canoe, plan on renting. I am fine with renting any and all gear appropriate for a fun, safe and enjoyable experience. Already have SPOT, GPS, etc.

Preferred/Typical party size?  4 or less
What length of trips do you do/available to do? Overnight to 14 days.
Preferred season? Summer and Fall
What % of the trip do you travel/base camp? Mixed - if the fish are biting why leave?
What difficulty level do you go for?
Whatever it takes to get to where I want to go. I am 64 but and it sometimes takes me a minute but I am a ‘never quit’ kind of guy. Prefer to do things in a steady manner but not afraid to do a major project. Ideally, I would like to start out with a 1 – 5 day trip in late June or early July from Gunflint and work up to a 5 – 10 day trip. I will be in Ely mid-July until approximately 1 November.
What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas? It’s new area to me. I am open to suggestions.

Paddling
Bow or stern preference?
I tend to prefer the stern but typically defer to experience. If the person I am with knows more about it then they get to pick.
What is your paddling rhythm? Steady wins the race. I tend to paddle the same pace all day and don’t try to kill myself.
Paddle the shoreline or beeline? Both. I have been on big water in bad weather.
How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? I'm not a risk taker-in cold weather/water. I prefer a ‘wait it out’ style. This is an activity being done for fun. Why endanger yourself unless there is an emergency?  I am not afraid of nasty water, I just prefer to make the best choice depending on the conditions.
Do you have strong navigation/map skills? Exceptional skills. Very experienced at Land navigation.

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage?
Have not done a lot of portaging.
Do you carry everything on your back, or a lot of hand carry?
I tend to have one single pack with everything in it.
How well do you handle the mountain goat portages?
If I can go at my pace, I expect I will be fine. Again, not all that experienced at it so not wanting to promise something I can’t deliver.
How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? You can always wash everything. You do what you need to do.

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? Either. I believe in doing my fair share and a bit more. If both people do that, things usually work out fine. I am comfortable cooking and cleaning is fine also.

Fresh or dried foods? I’m flexible. I typically go with freeze just for convenience since I am fairly cost indifferent.
Cook over a fire, or over a stove?
Fish on the fire. All else stove.  I am open to suggestions and comfortable either way.
Cook breakfast or breakfast bars? Boil water for a freeze-dried meal or oatmeal, some fruit, maybe a power bar or something. Coffee in the morning is a requirement!

How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip?
I can eat fish a lot of meals.
Hang the food pack or ground it?
Hang seems to be the recommended method.
Axe? Saw? Both? Saw only is what I have read as the best choice.
Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both) Evening meal clean up, set gear for the morning, a few minutes watching the fire and call it a night.
On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water?
Up early, coffee, eat, crap, clean. Rather spend the time fishing than laze around camp in the morning. Also up for *early* wake up, go fish, come back for a late breakfast/early lunch.

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing? I want time in the BWCA/Quietco for two reasons: Fishing and being outside. I fly fish avidly. That doesn’t mean I have to fish every minute of every trip but I doubt I’d go on a trip without a fly rod unless it was a quick 1 or 2 day ‘out and back’ to see something specific.

Which species do you like to go after? Normally I am a ‘catch and release’ only type of guy. In the BWCA I am a ‘catch and filet’ kind of guy. Not all that fussy about species.
How much tackle do you bring?
2 rods/reels and a couple of fly boxes.
Are you good with a fillet knife? Oh my yes.
Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered? I am 64 and a Type II diabetic. It is easily controlled with meds. I take pills in the AM and PM. Never had any problem with it, never stopped me from doing anything. Would have no qualms about a 14 solo trip.
Level of alcohol consumption?  If I took a 6 pack on a 10 day trip I would return with 5 beers.
Smoker? Yes and I try and be considerate about it. I step away from common areas. I do NOT discard butts. I pack them out.
Is photography high on your list? Somewhat. I have some DSLR gear I would like to take after getting a few trips under my belt. I would consider doing a photo trip and skipping fishing. I’m flexible about this.

Do you like to go after pictographs?  I will certainly check them out if I'm in the area.
Do you like to go after waterfalls?  I am flexible
Do you like to go after the northern lights?
Seen them. I would wake up to view them. I am also OK with ‘if we see them, we see them. If not, that’s OK also’ style.

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you?
Bug spray solves that issue.
What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? Sudden violent thunderstorms. I tend to err on the side of caution about seeking shelter on land instead of racing a squall to the shore. That doesn’t mean I paddle for the beach every time the wind blows, it just means I’ve been caught out enough to be alert. Riding a storm out on land doesn’t bother me. Getting wet is just part of the experience. I like the German attitude of “There is no bad weather, just inappropriate clothing”.

If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?
Discuss it. I doubt much could come up that could not be worked out.
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?  Hmm …. That’s a puzzler. Probably not much. Maybe a paddling companion that doesn’t respect the environment or repeatedly does dangerous things like try and pet a bear.  I’m pretty flexible so I’m not sure of what might be bad enough to cause me to pull the plug on a trip. Certainly not typical events like wet, cold, wind, rain or such. Maybe a major wildfire? I haven’t really thought this one out.
ADDED BY ME:
Additional info: Spending time in the BWCA and Quetico areas appeals to me on a deep level. Going solo doesn’t bother me but the wife is not happy about such an idea and a 2-person trip is usually more enjoyable. The first thing I think of is taking turns paddling while the other guy fishes. At age 64, I am retired, an experienced outdoorsman and frequently described as a ‘handy guy to have around”. I am a very experienced fly fisherman.

The money for food and renting gear, tows, drop offs, etc. doesn’t concern me much. I’m not looking for a full-blown guide. I am however looking for someone with experience and my budget allows for me to cover, within reason, whatever expenses occur. I understand some folks are on tight budgets. Maybe there is someone who has experience and time but is limited by budget. A situation like that could benefit both of us. They get to do more and/or longer trips than they would normally and I get someone to go with. Again, going solo doesn’t bother me but I’d rather go with someone.  Just trying to make it as much fun and as safe as possible. Maybe some young flat belly with time who wants to go but must watch pennies. Maybe some experienced old fart that realizes his budget for a 3-day trip can turn into a 10-day trip if we go together. I’m flexible and I am going. Maybe we should talk?

Welcome to the board!  I'm curious why you are fully outfitted yourself but have only been to the BW one time?  Where do you normally trip to?

Thanks for the welcome Tom!  I have all of the gear needed because I have done some backpacking in the past.  Actually, I've got enough gear that when my son in law goes with me this summer he won't have to buy or rent anything either.  I seem to have two (or three) of everything.  Drives my wife nuts.  Lol!

Only thing I had to use from an outfitter in 2018 was Rockwood's bunkhouse the night I arrived and the night before the drive home.  My one trip into the BWCA two years ago was the first time I've ever canoe...or in my case, kayak...camped.    Unfortunately northeast Indiana doesn't have a lot of places to paddle into and camp, but there are a couple and I plan to do some this year locally.  And, of course, get back up to the BWCA in June.  Fell in love with the place and think it'll be an annual (at least) trip from now on.
