Title: Tennessee QJERS??
Post by Old Salt on Jan 5th, 2021 at 6:50pm
Our dream of retiring to the North Shore of Lake Superior hit the rocks last fall as Mrs Salt was diagnosed with some health issues that will make moving north unwise. She needs to be in a warmer, more moderate climate away from extreme cold.

Our thoughts immediately turned to where should we go? We have 3 kids, living in Alaska, Minnesota, and Tennessee. Our daughter lives in Nashville. So we are now beginning a new search for our retirement location. We are not interested in living in Nashville as we wish to avoid population centers, preferring something more remote and rural. We would like to be within a 2-3 hour drive so that we can visit her and our granddaughter and they can visit us. Generally, we are thinking east of Nashville. Wondering about Dale Hollow lake area? We are looking for a home with a nice acreage so we can grow crops and have a few farm animals. The only part of Tennessee we have seen is around Nashville. If you have any tips or suggestions about where to look, please share. PM or email if you don’t wish to post. Thanks in advance!

Hi Old Salt,

Sorry about Mrs. Salt's issues.  Hope all goes well for you with your move.

Not Tennessee, but we have friends who live in rural Franklin, Kentucky (about 45-50 minutes from Nashville) and it is beautiful there.  We visited that area with them a few years ago and thought it was really lovely.

Also have friends who live on one of the huge lakes near Loudon, TN and I know that isn't a place where you grow crops and have animals, but the area around Loudon is really nice.  It is such a pretty little town, too.  Farther away, probably 2 1/2 hours from Nashville.

Good luck to you.  I hope you find something that is just perfect for you.

I have cousins who moved from southern Illinois ages ago to Greenville, TN which is a small town nestled into the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. Absolutely beautiful. You could do worse!

I appreciate each of your suggestions and expressions of support. We are checking out each community or area that you suggest. We are planning an exploratory trip the first week of February to try to narrow our search.  8-)Thanks!  8-)

OS,

I've travelled through TN on both business and pleasure quite a number of times.  My own personal taste would put me somewhere east of the diagonal from Johnson City to Knoxville into hill country and the mountains.  However, my guess is that might be a bit too far from Nashville to meet your needs.  In any case, much of the eastern half of the state is quite scenic so I doubt you could go far wrong, wherever you end up.

You can fish for Stripers and Muskies in some of the bigger lakes in the far east.  At one time this was one of MY targeted retirement areas.  Family needs now point us in the direction of Florida.

Hey, you may know better than me, but might not Yellowbird be able to provide you with a few tips?  I think he's still down in southeastern TN.  I could be wrong.

In any case, I salute your efforts to better accommodate the needs of Mrs. OS and wish you both good luck and good health with the transition.

Jimbo   8-)

P.S.  Be sure to plant your corn a little early next year.  Also, be careful when you slop the cows and milk the hogs; they can get a little surly, at times.

Sorry about the diagnoses. It is just part of what happens at our age, Good luck with the move.  I haven’t worked up the courage yet.

We had a good trip, did a ton of driving and saw much of Tennessee over 4 1/2 days. We had targeted 3 big areas to see and feel that we got a good read on all of them. 8-)

Linda has gout and arthritis which is the reason for moving south. I have some arthritis also, but not as severe as hers. We had mostly great weather for the trip, which was a blessing as we dodged a couple of storms.

Our primary goal was to see as much as possible and to choose an area to focus our search. We spent some time in the Smokies area, but decided it was way too touristy and populated for us. We have chosen to focus in an area north of Cookeville and around Dale Hollow Lake. It’s an area that’s thinly populated, has some great landscapes with hills, ridges, and valleys. This is north-central Tennessee. We plan to go back sometime in March after Linda retires to focus our search and become more familiar with this area. 8-)

Of course QJERS are welcome to come by and visit after we move. We don’t really have a timeframe except that we move in the warmer season. Those who spill on the carpet are welcome to camp in the yard or the woods. 8-)

Dale Hollow is reputed to be a great fishing lake. The world record smallmouth was caught here, as was the Tennessee record laker. Also, waldos, northerns, catfish, whitefish, panfish and others live here. I’m looking forward to wetting a line. It’s a deep clear lake.  8-)

I moved to Western NC and love it here.  That may be too far east for you, but it is a great area for outdoor recreation.

We will move and close on our chosen property in mid-August. It’s near Crossville, TN off I 40. We have plenty of room and space. Let me know if you’re in the area. Lots of fishing, hiking, waterfalls in the area. It’s the foothills of the Smokies.  8-) 8-)

That's fantastic OS. It looks like a beautiful place from what I see on the internet. Some great history as well.

Our move got delayed for a couple of months due to unforeseen circumstances, but we moved in a couple of weeks ago and are getting better acquainted with the area and our new (to us) neighbors. If you’re in the area, let me know and we can share some BBQ… 8-)
