a week or so ago I got an e-mail with pictures showing a bear vault that had been chewed open in the Bdub - bear had chewed thru the lid, taking out a pie shaped wedge and a bit of the polycarbonate barrel rim also.  Not sure if the bear had actually gotten any food out, but it could have.  From the pictures I could see that they had not tried to smell proof the can.

I paddle with a lot of people and I am the only one I know of who smell proofs their bear can - I always line the can with two layers of trash bags with the tops twisted and rubber banded shut, in addition to the packaging.  Leaving  anything with food smell is just an invitation to trouble, whether the food is in a bear resistant cannister or not - getting frustrated with one of those may make the bear check out your tent.
