Title: Quetico Lunkers Club
Post by Old Salt on Jan 17th, 2022 at 8:10pm
Some of us have caught some true Quetico lunkers, and while everyone in the party, and perhaps on the lake knows about it, we might hope for the recognition of our peers on QJ. Where’s Stumpy? 8-)

Here’s the idea. When you catch a Quetico giant, document the catch with pictures and measurements (you were going to do that anyway). The following fish qualify:

Northern Pike 42” +
Walleye 30”+
Smallmouth bass 20”+
Largemouth bass 21”+
Lake Trout 30”+
Whitefish 18”+

The rules are simple. Send a picture of your catch with measurements (length & girth) along with date caught and name of lake or river where caught.
Angler must have a valid license and fish must be in season.
Fish must be caught in mouth with barbless hooks.
Fish must be released if possible. 8-)

Everyone who visits Quetico is eligible. No pre-registration. This can continue every year.

I look forward to seeing some fish pictures and reading a few stories. Thanks  8-)

Why 42 inches for a Northern.  I think 40 inches makes more sense.  A 40 inch northern certainly qualifies as a trophy.

The measurements are my opinions. Each is entitled to their own opinions. If you think it’s a trophy, it’s a trophy for you. 8-) A 42” northern is a trophy for me.

I can share a picture if you wish. It wasn't in Quetico, but Turtle River Provincial Park, and I didn't catch it, but a friend did on our trip last year...not measured, but it's a beaut...

Caught in Turtle River/White Otter Provincial park on a hand painted lure I bought on Amazon. I guessed the weight of the fish to be around 35lbs and the length in the 48" range...we should have used a paddle to measure it.

That area is often overlooked but is a great area to visit. Went there one year as part of a 4 man fly-in fishing trip. We had access to boats/motors but I could see it's potential for a canoe trip.

We had a great trip via canoe. Put in off the hwy 622 bridge, and exited in Clearwater West. My only complaint was the wind and waves. Our last day was spent paddling in water we had no business being in, but wind was our constant companion during the week....was also a wee bit hot the first few days. Fishing was superb.
