I'm thinking of hitting the Flambeau over Memorial Day weekend.  Anyone have any experience from around that time?  I'm wondering if the campsites are tough to get, and how the fishing is.

Howdy AB.....

We paddled the north fork of the Flambeau last year the weekend after Memorial Day.  I would expect Memorial Day to be a bit busier than the following weekend, however.

There are quite a few campsites along the river but plan to set-up camp no later than mid-afternoon.  That should assure you of a campsite.

Many of the campsites have more than one tent pad so you should be ok.  Just plan accordingly and adjust for the numbers of people on the river.  A beautiful, hot weekend will bring out the canoers.  A cool, rainy weekend (aren't all Memorial Days like that?) will keep the numbers down.

If you need some specifics about the Flambeau, I'll try to help you the best I can.  It's really a great ride.

Thanks Jackfish.

I'm pretty excited about it as a long weekender.  I just found that it looks like Musky season opens the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, which would likely make it busier on top of the holiday.  Maybe I'll see if the crew can hold off a bit, or maybe even go the weekend before...

I used to go down the Flambeau every May on opening weekend of game fishing and always did well. Our primary target was walleyes. Be prepared for cold though. I've been in t shirts and I've been in full ice fishing wear.

Cheers,

thanks vet, the 'eyes are what I like to hear Cheesy   I'd like to catch a nice muskie someday, but I think I'd rather have a nice walleye dinner.

If anyone is interested in Flambeau river trips flambeauadventures.com runs canoes and shuttles people up river.  They can also answer any river or camping questions.  Just send them a e-mail through their site.

I picked up a neat brochure at CanoeCopia that has a ton of information, including small maps, on the Flambeau River.

You can find the same information at (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) .

They also list a phone number of (800) 269-4505.

Hope this helps anyone looking for a great whitewater paddle this year.

No commercial interest here.  Just a happy Flambeau paddler.
