White Otter Wilderness Area

This may best be filed under the "other places to paddle" thread, but since White Otter is just north of Quetico and of similar qualities, I thought that I'd post this here. It seems that the summer youth trip that I lead may be going into White Otter instead of Quetico. Our groups may be a bit larger this year and permit fees, along with outfitter input may put us in White Otter this summer. I'm a bit disapointed, partially for symbolic reasons, I wanted to add to my knowledge of Quetico and to expand upon the areas that I've seen in Quetico. I also wanted to pass along more info on Quetico, though I guess the trade off will be passing along new info to the group on White Otter.

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has been to White Otter and has any suggestions, words of wisdom as well as general info on how White Otter compares to Quetico.

NW-
I thought about Wow for this year for similar reasons.  Just from doing that, I know some of what you're feeling.  Cry All the investment or time in route discussions, pouring over maps, etc.  It's hard to think about going somewhere I don't have most of the routes committed to memory!

The previous WoW thread didn't generate a lot of discussion, but some - you might want to look there.  It's certainly a lot like Quetico, but some cabins, some boats, some power lines.  (I haven't been there, but have first hand reports from friends who have.)

If you do end up going there, take good notes & give us a trip report!  The more I (and we) know, the more likely we are to go there!

I'm having problems tracking down the old White-Otter thread. I certainly will pass along any and all info in a trip report. I'm not paying for this trip, I'm actually getting paid, but I'd still rahter be in Quetico. I've got one White Otter map (not sure if it's just one segment of the area or the entire area) but it seems like the network of lakes and portages isn't quite as developed and there are just more options within Quetico, but that's just a first reaction. I'm sure that the outfitters will have much more info to pass along.

With Jim's markings on your maps, you should do well anywhere, eh?
