I know that this is off topic somewhat, but I travel to Quetico one or two times a season.  My husband and I plan on taking our six children to the Outpost Lodge near Thessalon.  Has anyone been?  Can you give any advice?  Thanks!

Canada is a huge country.  Your question is kind of like asking about Springfield, USA.  Sorry, but it's a pet peeve of mine.  If someone asks about a place in Canada they should specify the province.

That being said, it looks like it's in Ontario along the Trans-Canada highway near Lake Huron. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) indicates they offer canoe trips on the Mississagi, but for only 6 miles.

Have fun if you go.

No problem, sorry to be grumpy.  I spent all night in an airplane.

How did you hear about this lodge?  Sportshow?  A friend who goes there?  It may be a bit of searching for the needle in the haystack here to find someone who has been.

The one I like is  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links), near Ely in Minnesota, USA.  I've gone a few years and it is good for kids.  I don't have any, but I've been up there with a family of 8 and they all had a great time.

firstmate,
this kind of question fits well in the "Other places to paddle" section - maybe a moderator will move it there.

My wife and I have been to the Outpost Lodge twice in the past. It is run by Ann and Jim Kehoe and their two sons Jamie and Sean. They are wonderful hosts and serve great food. The lodge is a very rustic log dwelling that sits well up above the lake providing a beautiful view. They have a very nice beach for swimming. The cabins are up on the same level as the lodge and are seperated by considerable space and lots of trees. If you are looking for a quiet, laid back get-away - you have selected the right place. Besides fishing, Jim can fix you up with a canoe trip down the Mississagi River or take you to his secret "big pike" lake. There is a number of things within a short ride to see and do in the area. Jim or Ann will be glad to fill you in on all of the local attractions.
I hope this helps to make your trip a good one.

Here's another relevant link for that lodge & the general area.

Well I just got back from the area & I did visit the Outpost Lodge as planned. Ann & Jim were very nice.  I really liked the place & the option of a canoe trip on the very beautiful Missisagi - we may go as a family next year.  The cabin that would suit my family is very nice & has a great view of the lake & faces north for aurora viewing.  I don't know about fishing, but my son caught 2 smallmouth in the middle of the day from the dock area while I was getting a tour of the camp.  Jim said hitting fishing at dusk is most productive.

PS: I attached a view from the lodge.
