CANOECOPIA
Dec 11th, 2006 at 2:06am
Quote Quote Print Post Print Post
Fishingbuddy and I were discussing tonight in the Council Fire about a get together at Copia this March.  We had several ideas, which hinged around weather and numbers in attendance.  Last year several of us had lunch on Saturday at the nearby bowling ally.  Had a great time but I thought giving some notice to them might increase the service.  We discussed also trying a tailgate party.  Another options might be a room at one of the hotels.
I know there are several on the qj that also frequent other boards.  Which planning a Saturday night get together might limit/increase attendance, due to other gatherings.

Also I was thinking that the Pink Flock should be there in full display. Undecided  Maybe even one of those fancy pink hats for Jimbo to wear.    Embarrassed

Anyone interested?
Any ideas?

Lunch Sat. at the Badger Bowl would get my vote. Last year we had the place to ourselves. Plenty of room for a larger group and no weather worries.

Although we can not be there, one trip home from New Mexico for Amy's graduation and the holidays is all we can handle, we would definitely vote for the Badger Bowl if we were going to. There is plenty of room and the food is always decent.

I was a little disappointed, last year, not to find "Sauteed Badger" on the menu.  That Speckled Cow beer was a reasonable consolation however.  I'd go back there, again, for more of the same....

Looks like I'll not be making the "Badger Bowl" this year -- committments elsewhere at that time.  For those of you who may be attending for the first time, hotel/motel availability is at somewhat a premium that time of year.  'copia is normally during the same time window as state-wide high school playoffs.  I found this out the hard way last year (my first at 'copia).  I wound up staying at a very nice place, but it was a "hike" to the 'copia site.  So ... book early!  (I might add the motel was "teaming" with high school kids...and parent...one night and I felt I nearly had the place to myself the next night.)

I believe the Clarion is already booked up.  Lucky for me Geo got our rooms a few weeks ago.  I do have a list of a few options near by if anyone needs them let me know.  I have the phone numbers too.

Count Scott, Brian, Kelly and I in for lunch at the Badger Bowl.  Prices look reasonable and the menu looks good.

Looking forward to meeting a good number of the QJ regulars.  Spartan 2 can take a group portrait but I am sure there will be a number of other cameras there also.

Since no one is heading this up, I'll propose that we meet at 1:00PM at he Badger Bowl for a QJ Pink Flamingo reunion. This will give those who are driving in from a distance a chance to get there. Order from menu. We trust Jimbo will bring the pinks and an appropriate banner. Who wants to be in charge of setting this up with Badger Bowl? Anyone live in Madison area? Wear your QJ colors!
Free pack extenders will be awarded to anyone who buys me lunch.  Wink

Mrs. fishinbuddy and I will be there.  QP if you want to call and warn them.  It looks like about 12 but, I think we may get a few more people.  I would suggest we take a last minute count and let them know.

We may want to start new thread to stay on topic and see how many will be going to the badger bowl for lunch, and pictures.  Maybe we can get one of our excellent photographers to bring their camera...any volenteers...

The Badger bowl is an interesting choice for lunch, it is close and should be enjoyable. If you are planning on spending anytime in Madison you need to visit the Essen Haus for dinner and music or at least beer and music. It is a great mix of people especially if you stick around for the music.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

also try a meal at the Great Dane brew pub, it is just off the capital square and has a great menu along with great beer.

Mrs. Jimbo & I will be in attendance.  She has decided to go slumming & check out the denizens of the QJ internet world where I live [it was either take her to "investigate" OR she was ready to sign the necessary papers to have me committed].

See you at the Badger Bowl!!

Badger Bowl has been warned.
They don't have table service on weekends so here is how it is set up.
Orders will be place by each individual party at the bar off the menu.  They will call or bring food to tables.  She did say she would be sure and have extra help that day.
I told her to expect 20 but be prepared for as many as 30.
Party name is QJ
Lunch Time is 1:00 pm
Date Saturday March 10th

Pink Flamingo's wearing spotted cow bells WECLOME  Shocked

Spartan 2 will have the camera.  Who is bringing the video camera?
A thought, to those going, might be to email cell phone numbers.  Unless we're all wearing pink shirts.   Undecided

S2, I think you have really gotten in the deep end on this one.  You know the saying, the only difference beween men and boys is the price of their toys...Well this crew is mostly men er I mean boys that never grew up.  Add the numbers we are talking about and a beer or two (no one drank that much last year) and thigs could spin out of control quickly... Shocked

QP, you should have used another boards name, that way QJ could keep it's clean reputation.

At least my wife will be there, she keeps me out of trouble for the most part!  The rest of you are on your own and QJ has no responsibility what so ever....

next week we should confirm who will be at the badger bowl so we can warn them.   Wink

Next year maybe we will have enough momemtum to take the lunch up a notch.

A big thanks to QP for being point man on this, so if something isn't right we can point at him and say ...

I don't think there is anything special about the Badger Bowl except that it is within easy walking distance of 'Copia, so we can avoid re-parking, etc..  "Kicking it up a notch" in the future is probably a good idea.

I thought we were headed to Badger Bowl this year because that new hot band, "QP & the Voyageurs" is doing a gig there that afternoon??

Of course, if "PJ & the Pipers" are in town, we should have the Badger Bowl pretty much to ourselves....

The 'Bowl is (kinda) a pit, but as Jimbo has pointed out, it has one huge advantage: location.

My suggestion from last year never gained traction (for good reason); tailgate in the Alliant parking lot, sampling fine Wisconsin brew, Old Wisconsin sausages, and Cache Bay fry breads.

I'm sure you guys will have a good time at the 'Bowl.

I am anti-social; attending Copia but not lunch.

Bon Apetit,

The Beaver, I thought it was a great idea, but a bit harder to organize.
I floated the idea by the people that run the Alliant place and the did not really say yes, they did not say no, but they have an agreement with the concessionair that they are the only ones to cater an event on the property.
That being said, we could informally have a tail gate but if it got too big or too organized...I am not sure.
I think organizing something off site is the way to go at least for now.  I do not want to open a can of worms here but if QJ was behind the event and it was not done through proper chanels then.... and we do not need any headachs.  It sounds so simple but with buracracy (sic) there is always something.
Maybe when we are there we could talk to them again, along with the Copia organizers and see if we can come up with something.  If I remember kingfisher said he may donate a few walleye fillets to the kettle. Wink

I though eveyone knew qp can't sing.  Maybe after the warm up act?  Grin PJ's pipes will offset the  hoot Owl Screeching of qp's voice.
Which key are you singing it in this time Jimbo?  Shocked  I wanted to make sure the sing along sheet music works with the rap. Cheesy

PJ,

Well, the closest word in Webster's to "mixolydian" is "mixology" (ie. the art of preparing mixed drinks).   No real surprise to discover you are such an "artiste".

Re: "F minor" key, however, I must plead musical ignorance.  Is THAT the key uniquely attained by a "strangling pig"??

Nope - that's the predominate key used when Cat Wrestling

This could prove to be VERY interesting!

One Question I have, when do we ring the Spotted Cow Bells?  Before the Cat wrestliing or right after  Strangling the pig?  I'm thinking with the proper amount of Spotted Cow  we might just get Jimbo to hit that F# an octave above middle C.   Shocked
Lets see ...

are there any Beat Bop'ers showing up?

Mr Evinrude and Sca-ish are preparing for the Hibbing High School choir trip to Ireland the end of March, so we will prod them to join in or even lead this little sing along.  We'll get them singing like they were after the lightning strike.  Little sister can outdo them though and she also will be joining us at the Badger Bowl bash, maybe we'll finally assign here a QJ board name at that time.  Instead of the strangled pigs, we'll have the squealing kids.  They know a full range from the roaring 20's through today's rap and beyond with a sound all their own.

I'm going to need a quiet trip into canoe country after this

Just a heads up on the Saturday 1:00 pm Lunch at Copia.
I spoke with the manager this evening at the Badger Bowl.  We are all set I told him to expect 20 -30 people. So he will be seting us up with a room off to the side of the bar.  i thought this might be best esp. if the band is performing  Grin

A QJ flock shall gather in the lobby area of 'Copia at around 12:40pm or so.  If attending Badger Bowl festivities, be on the lookout for a few QJ T-shirts & some dude in a long-sleeve flamingo shirt.  The flock shall then depart for the scheduled 1pm feeding at the Badger Bowl.  I hope to see you at one place or the other or both.

I can't make it up to Canoecopia on Saturday (longstanding work commitment), but am planning to be there on Sunday. I know I'm a relative newbee to the board and an irregular poster at best, but am looking forward to my first Canoecopia. Any suggestions on must do's for the Sunday?

The banner did not make the event but we still had a great time.  I also got to see the Pink Flamingos in action, reeling in fellow QJ people.  Jimbo was wearing a shirt with the pinks on the front and he seemed to attract people.  QP thanks again for arranging the lunch, we had our own room, I guess that was better for the rest of the customers.  Grin
I had hoped to see the hat in action, I bet even more would have been attracted to that lure, but I think Jimbo's better half would not let the hat out of the house.

Anybody go to Cliff's seminar?

I tried to buy the Surefire flashlight he was talking about but couldn't find it on the floor anywhere.

Man, that guy can talk.

Gotta say probably the most crowded Copia ever. Combined with the beautiful weather, and Bike O Rama and Girls HS Bball tournament across the street it was one crowded place.

TB,
do you remember the name of the SURE-LIGHT that he mentioned??
I know the brand from the Brigade Quarter masters military supply catalog.
There high end flashlights with a battle tested reputation??
I see they have models that can be used to disoriented??
I seem to remember someone mentioning that as a possible bear deterrent??
I'm curious if that is the model or models he was talking about??

I believe he said "shurefire.com" and I am going to try that. We just got home at 6 PM and had newborn triplet lambs in the barn, and a set of twins born while we were gone that are looking sickly, plus I need to download the group picture so I can get it off to db for POD.

It was really neat to meet a bunch of you!  We enjoyed 'copia a lot!

Andy, I'm sorry.  I just can't resist.  Temptation got the best of me but I'll console myself with the fact that someone else would have done it if I hadn't jumped in to do it first.  My mom was an English teacher so I will blame her for making me notice.

It's "grammar", not "grammer".  Cheesy

OK, I'm done.  Lips Sealed

Posting the pic here seems better than a pod and I'll even risk embarrassment by taking first crack at names. I reeeally suck at names so please forgive me if some are switched and for not knowing names of spouses, friends...  As individuals go, I'd say they're all "good people".

L to R
Back row:
GeoFisher, C-Dub, fishinbuddy, Jimbo, Mrs. Jimbo, old_salt, some guy Magicpaddler dragged along, Kingfisher, Magicpaddler, Spartan1, db

Front row:
Some guy C-Dub dragged along, qp, Mrs. qp, Mrs. fishinbuddy, Queenfisher, Wenonah Rider, Mr Evinrude, Sca-ish, Spartan2

Close?

Many thanks to Spartan2 for a decent pic in not the best light and qp for making calls. I'm not a people person and didn't go to 'copia this year but the afternoon was certainly worth my drive.

I concur with the identifications given, names have been withheld to protect the rights of the guilty.

I will say this, canoe country is a better place because of the efforts and passions of all those in the picture

Any suggestions on a board name for my daughter ??

The pic did turn out well, thank you Lynda

Well, Andy, I just saw this post this morning, but I guess the guys have pretty well hit you for YOUR spelling!

And no, I was a music teacher!  Grin  But I can spell "grammar", as well as most every other word--although I often don't read my posts nearly well enough and typos do get by me from time to time!

Your son was a delightful dinner companion, seems like a fine young man, and he will go far.  It doesn't look like spelling is his strong suit--could it be that the apple didn't fall far from the tree???   Roll Eyes

Lynda
And it wasn't really fair to correct that, so that all of our posts look rather silly now! Grin

We needed the wives and kids in the picture to give it a chance of turning out. The rest of those in the pic...Motley Crew was better looking

Honestly, I will say this. We are all young looking for our age.  I know those in the twenty and early 30 something crowds in much worse shape looks and fitness wise.  Our common passion for canoe country drives us to stay young and fit

It is a privilage to be in the pic with the rest of you

Looking at the shape we're in in the picture gives it away Wink  If we were in the late 20 /early 30 something crowd we wouldn't be in the great shape that we are in the pic or to go to canoe country, just check out the "what exercise thread" .   I am in much better shape now than when I was late 20 / early 30 something.......it's just my bald head and gray hairs that give it away  Smiley  That's why you'll need your sunglasses on the trip  Cool

Hey that is a pretty good picture, my wife even covers up my shape a bit, she is good at hiding my faults.   Kiss

When we were driving up I was not sure a spring trip would be possible, with my being gone so much and a lot to do around the house, I figured Mrs. fb would insist on postponing the trip.  After talking with so many that have a passion she is excited about a spring fishing trip and a family trip, and now she is thinking of going on a trip like I did with another solo paddler Shocked.  Talk about a turn of fortunes, thanks to everyone we had a great time.

Definitely an interesting group!  I remember many of you I met this summer, QP, Magicpaddler, Kingfisher, Jimbo, and of course Old_Salt... at least one is missing from last years picture!  and there are a few more this year I am not too familiar with!  Good to see all of you guys even if it is in a picture!  Hopefully, someday Mrs. Arkansasman and I will get to come up there and enjoy the whole thing!  And BTW... Jimbo. I love your shirt... It takes a real man to wear pink...  (Flamingo's that is...)

I'm not sure if you guys ever came up with the model of SureFire flashlight that Cliff was talking about, but I picked up one called the G2. It has a plastic body and comes with a 65 lumen bulb.
It was $36 on the SureFire website, and I coughed up another $25 for the 120 lumen, high-output bulb. (Be sure to also order their pack of batteries. 12 for $21. If you buy them locally, you'll spend $7 for two.)

You can also pick them up at Cabela's for the same price, but you'll pay just a little more for the batteries.

An AMAZING amount of light in a package that is the same length as a Mini-Mag!!

(I saw Cliff at the Quiet Water Syposium in Lansing last year. He CAN talk, and he loves his SureFire!)
