Looking to share a trip...

Hey QJ,
I am shamelessly advertising for a tripping partner. What was a 4-man effort is now done to one as of this morning.  I am looking to enter Quetico from the north, and do a loop of some sort. My original plan was 20May - 30May, but I am flexible.  I have enough gear to completely outfit two people including kevlar, paddles, and your own solo tent.

I have been tripping QPP for about 10 seasons, so I definitely have favorite places to  visit, but I am open to suggestions. If anyone on the board knows of someone dying to do a spring-ish trip to QPP,  or might have an opening on something in the works,  please let me know as soon as possible.  Thanks, --paw (pawnipi_AT_gmail.com)

Hey Paw,
I know that the BWCA isn't exactly the Quetico....but we are going that week of May 20th and we need a 4th guy.
I laid out my usual program in the post below, and am sure you have already  read it...and I guess weren't interested.  I think we would be flexible to moving around more or trying someplace else in the BWCA, if you had a suggestion, but our entry permit is for Moose Lake on the 20th.   We are still looking for a 4th, and you seem to be looking for a trip.  Perhaps you'd reconsider what we are planning as better than either no trip at all, or a solo trip into the Q.
What do you think?

Dwight

I'm going in at EP16 from 6/6 to 6/13 with a partner but due to the long drive (I live in Tennessee) I want to stay a bit longer.  If anyone wants to begin on 6/15ish, I'm game.

Hey paw,
Why not just go ahead and do a solo?
My first trip into the BW/Q was a 10 day solo trip from Beaverhouse to Lac La Croix. No debate on how fast, when to stop, when to start, etc.
It was great!
Just a thought.

I'm also looking to go this year but don't have a permit or trip planned.  I do have all my own gear and a potenial fishing buddy to go with, however he is not as experienced in a canoe and I'm wondering if it is best to do a "safe" trip before heading into the vastness of the Park.  For this situation, it might be nice to do a trip with two canoes, 4 people.

Welcome Kenny B Grin Grin

I think your gut is giving you good advice Wink Wink
BETTER, a more "civilized" trip with someone you're not sure about, than to get in to deep and realize you have to take care of yourself and your paddling partner??
The 2 canoe's and 4 guy's is a good idea as well if 2 of you are somewhat experienced and can watch the "rookies" Grin Grin
Its also a confidence builder for your buddy, why get him in over his head and feeling like he's not carrying his weight, when a milder trip will sharpen his skills without putting a burden on you Cool Cool
More than one potential paddler has been turned off by being included in a trip that was way over there heads!!
People do it to there kids and there friends not realizing that for some, a "wilderness" trip can be a exciting but scary time especially if they have limited experience Undecided Undecided
Maybe go just deep enough to wet his appetite but not so far you can't get out easily if the situation turns sour??

I'm with Chinook. You don't have to make anyone happy but yourself. What happens if you get some one who is yackety- schmackety and won't shut up for 5 minutes? What then?

For me 2 solo boats has been the best trips.

Hi QJ
Shameless? Nah don't be. I've been paddling the BW for the past 6 years and also have found myself all alone. While I have done 3 solo trip I had hopes of finding a partner myself. May I'm not totally solo, my dog comes with. I already have my permits for a June trip but would be open to a fall trip. I planned my spring trip a couple weeks later than normal because I have had snow the last couple years and so this year with the crazy weather I have a feeling I am getting myself in the middle of bug central. Anywho any interest from you or anyone, I wouldn't mind some extra paddle power. Plan is to put in at Mudro and base camping on Horse with day trips.

Oh just to add to ya'll I do enjoy the solo trips but truth is a lone female at 120 sopping wet, a slight breeze can set me at bay. Maybe I need to buff myself up! Wink

paw,

I know how that goes, with the 4 guys dwindling to 1. That's what made me a solo guy... it's easy to find friends who are interested in good trips, and even commit to them, but then the launch date comes near, and all of a sudden everyone's got things to do. I still invite my friends on all of my trips, to the BW and elsewhere, but it's more of a courtesy. They know and I know that I'll end up alone.

So far I've got eight people on board for a Teslin / Yukon / South Nahanni River trip next summer, we'll see how many end up going - with three years to make the plans? It was supposed to happen this summer, but we agreed to push it back a year to give people more time to plan for time off, so if 8 becomes 1 by next spring, I'm going to be more than a little upset. Of course, anyone here on QJ is more than welcome to join the flotilla.

That said, I'll add my encouragement for the solo. There's only one moron to talk to and only one idiot to blame when things go wrong, but it's a much more relaxing experience overall. No distractions.

JPhilip, I'm putting in at Mudro on June 1st, making a loop back to Mudro via Basswood River / Friday Bay. I like to trip by myself, but I'm always open to share campfires and Jameson. If you see a green Argosy go by with the QJ decal, don't be afraid to say hello.

Nope. That requires clicking buttons and stuff. And reading. Who wants that on an internet forum?  Tongue

Sounds like a fantastic trip.  Are you going to paddle them all in the same trip?

Gee Willikers Yo Dude Hey man, this place is timeless! Really...

That said, welcome JPhilip! There is a "Member's Profile" thread stuck to the top of this forum. Replies in that forum tend to be helpful, especially for those who don't post a lot. Hooking up with like minded paddlers is why this particular board exists.

Beyond that, if you are serious about finding someone to paddle with, share your opinions and experience wherever as often as you can. The personal messaging feature is one of the more used/popular areas of QJ and it's still as anonymous as you care to make it.
