I hiked around to the SE end of the lake back in '77. Started on the Heart Lake trial (from the North), and around past the South Arm and the SE Arm, past the inlet, to camp on a nice sandy beach. About 24 miles one-way, I took a day and a half to get there. The lake was very shallow, with no drop off, and I had to wade out maybe 20 or 30 yards from shore to get above knee-deep so I could get some reasonably clear water. The wave action was stirring up the sand, and there was a lot of "seaweed" floating aroud, since the wind was pushing it directly onshore. I was really bummed out about that, thinking that my fishing was going to be hopeless, but it turned out to be pretty good from the shore. I'd hook a 15 or 16 inch Cutthroat trout every 2nd or 3rd cast - 2 out of 3 times, I'd just pick up weeds that killed the action of the little golden spoon I was using. It got to be boring, way too easy. I quit after a counted 20 fish, caught in about 2 or 3 hours. All but one were inside the slot limit and had to be released. I only wanted one for dinner, and I'm shure that that one fish must have been a 1/16th inch over the slot.
A couple of weeks later, I read in the papers that a woman had been killed by a Griz on the Heart Lake trail section that I had hiked in and out on, within a wek of the time that I had been there. I'd seen fresh Griz tracks in the trail on my way in. If I ever did that again, I'd paddle in and camp on one of the islands, and would not cook fish on shore again. I was maybe a mile at most from that inlet, and it was teeming with spawning trout ( off limits to filshing) - probably made a great bear attractant.
