Love this book !!! I have a signed copy given to my grandfather. Handel mentions that his favorite area is the region serviced by the following railroads: Algoma Central and Hudson Bay, the Canadian Pacific, the Ontario Northland and the Canadian National railways. Given that the book was written in 1953, what area specifically is he referring to ? The ilustrations by G. Fred Schueler are first rate too. Just looking at them takes me back to every trip I have made.

Algoma Central runs from Sault Ste. Marie thru Agawa Canyon and ends somewhere north/northeast of Wawa (connects to CNR if I recall).  There are a lot of fishing camps/lodges along the route that used to be train-in/fly-in only.  Some still are but many are on logging roads also now.
Ontario Northland goes ~Toronto to Moosonee (James Bay).

CNR and CP go lots of places.  Hudson Bay I don't know as a railroad, but you could google it...

VIA Rail, Canada's version of Amtrak, has passenger service between Winnipeg and Churchill, Manitoba, over the Hudson's Bay Railway (formerly owned and operated by Canadian National RR).  Check with (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) .

Other than that, this book claims to cover a lot of Canada north of the populated area.  Ontario Northland? That RR serves from north of Toronto to Temiskaming, I think.  So a pretty wide area.
