Have used one for a long time.... and absolutely love it.  We bring in some collapseable 2-3 gallon containers and usually fill a few of these up per day with clean water from the filter.  Hang the collapseable jugs from a tree, open the valve, and it's just like having a spigot with running water.

1.  Does it work?  Yup
2.  Do you like it? Yup
3.  How much ...? About $40 (unless you find a sale)
4.  Widely available? You can find them online and at stores like Cabelas.
5.  ... don't like about it?  It doesn't have an auto-shutoff and it doesn't fill itself. Wink

we use both the hiker and basecamp. we use the hiker on the move and fill everyones waterbottle in the lake, then use the basecamp in camp-it saves a lot of time and hassle. we found the filter lasts alot longer getting water out in the lake. nice thing both take the same filter.

We use (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) when we're on the go, and then use the base camp filter when we get to camp.

O.K., I'm confused.  The Katadyn Base Camp filter is between $55 to $65 everywhere I look.  I think it was DD said they could be had for about $40 on sale, but I don't see anything even close to $40, (unless you were referring to the replacement cartridge).

Second point of confusion:  On the Katadyn website under the heading 'Endurance Series', I find the Katadyn Camp filter.  It looks just like the Base Camp except it has a cleanable ceramic element.  That's a good thing...right?  Problem is I don't know who sells it and how much more $$$ it costs.  I need to do a little more surfing to see if I can find the ceramic element model.

Not an expert with all this stuff but have some experience.  We have done a week-long trip the last two summers.  The first year our group had my MSR ceramic pump filter and the other two filters in our group were the paper filter Katadyn pumps.  I wasn't too happy with my MSR at first because it is much slower than the Katadyn pumps.  And, because I didn't know what I was doing I didn't realize when it needed to be cleaned.  So, we mainly used the other two filters the first year.

This last year I bought one of the Basecamp filters and it was an instant hit with everyone (and we had 15 in our group- and no, not in the BW or Q).  I paddled out to fill it for the first few days but eventually as everyone was getting their water from it some folks filled it from shore a couple of times on about day 3.  That did it in.  It slowed to the point of not being usable.  We were back to pumping again.

So, it was great while it worked.  I think if you were using it for a reasonable amount of people, and were careful to fill it away from shore, it would be fine.  I ended up having to use my MSR after the Basecamp plugged and once I got in the habit of cleaning it often I ended up really liking it.  In a side by side with the slowly- working day 3 or 4 Basecamp the water coming out of the MSR was clearer and better-tasting. I plan on packing a spare filter for the Basecamp the next time we go.

So, there is my limited experience.  Hope it helps at least a little.

If I was buying a gravity filter right now I'd consider the MSR.  I have no experience with them but they say it's field cleanable and it's rated for 1,500 liters per cartridge versus the 200 liters for the Basecamp.  There aren't many reviews on them so it's hard to say if it would be a better choice and worth the extra money.  But, it would be worth looking at:
