Found this unit on the Ostrum Outdoor site.
Here's the HOME page for the manufacturer.
Place in OHIO sells the LE for $52 plus.
Construction sounds unique, anyone here have it, or used one?

Years ago I had exposure to what I know as  a BUZZ Stove via campmore.....same principle------battery operatered forge style stove-the guide used it in the gates of the artic on a 65 day trip-when they return at the end of the summer season I inquiered about the stove and her experiences as I was very curious about her take....on the stove and the trip......she informed me that the stove worked but it was slow and she like gas better-when I asked if she would use one again-she replied yes in a small group/solo------asked the same of one of the groupys I was informed that the thing sucked!......there was no glow in her eye or the groupys for that matter about the stove. Mind you all this was 15 years ago-we were both buzzing about he Buzz-----sorted out a lot of weight issues and fuel issues as they are suppose to burn nearly anything that one can put a flame to.....never tried one and the buzz was the closest that i ever got....Yeah yeah I know not much help! There are others available too......I will be watching this thread as it has rekindled the interest. WinkSorry I could not resist. Droppings anyone! anyone?

The Sierra Zip Stove has been around for awhile. It too has the battery powered fan for a "forge" effect. I'm hoping one of the engineers on here take a look at the Wood gas camp stove and the Sierra zip, and tell us IF the Wood gas is REALLY different, or just the same as the Sierra?
It looks different, and the "How it works" section sounds different, but it might just be clever marketing Undecided
I'm sure someone with the "right" credentials will chime in Wink

A bit misleading, I think.  THere is no way you can burn fuel twice.  At best, it might be burning incompletely somehow at the bottom, then burning the remainder at the top.

I read somewhere, a long time ago, that "wood" does not actually burn, but rather, the heat gassifies the wood - i.e. it goes from a solid to a gas, then the gas burns.  You can kind of see that when a stream of gas shoots out of a burning log.

even gasoline liquid does not burn, it is the vapor that burns

I think that premise behind the forge style stove thing is that one gets a more complete burn, a faster release of the combustable's stored calories-because more O2 is supplied to the oxidation process via the fan.....The stove that I was speaking to was/is the Sierra Zip stove. It is the difference between making charcoal and white ash.....If I recall the Zip Stove had a much smaller combustion chamber and is smaller in overall appearance.....I wonder if that is the thing that the folks that manufacture/pedal this wood gas stove are speaking to ....the stove ability to more completely burn the gases because they remain confined for a long period of time in the combustion chamber? might be easier to load the fuel...Maybe. Are you going to play with it solotripper?

I'm going to get some kind of wood burning stove before my next spring trip, whenever that is Sad
I'll bring my trusty Peak 1 multi-fuel for a quick start in the morning, and use the Wood-Burner for the evening meal, and starting the campfire. I figure the trade-off from bringing less Coleman fuel and the weight of the Wood-Burner, will be about even.
Another thing I'm looking at, is that with my dry-fly tarp/tent set-up, that little Wood-Burner would allow me to use it as a miniature heating stove, if I rig some kind of spark arrestor for it.
I'm hoping someone that has either the Zip Stove or Wood Gas stove will way in on the differences IF there is any?
Worse case scenario, I'll order BOTH and send one back.
PS, Mad Mat is dead on about the liquid gasoline comment!
When I was a young buck , I worked with my Dad, we installed gas tanks/pumps and hoists in Service stations. Some was new work, most were additions, so we were around gasoline and vapors. My Dad showed me the real danger with a little "FARMER" experiment. He filled a metal bucket with gasoline, and proceeded to light a match, blow it out and threw it in the bucket Shocked
Too my amazement, the match went out! He then emptied the bucket into a bulk tank, and repeated the experiment. The bang and flash from the fumes scared the hell out of me, and made me realize what was the real danger was when working around or with gasoline Wink

The deal with wood-gas stoves is 'secondary combustion'.

As has been noted - in an open fire wood gasifies and the burning flame is in the gas - not on the wood.  I guess you'd call that the primary combustion - and it generally isn't all that efficient or hot, and tends to be sooty.

Secondary Combustion / Gasification burners have
  - a primary fire chamber
  - an introduction of heated air after the primary chamber

The secondary air at the output of the primary chamber results in a flame that more completely burns the wood gas - hotter and more effienciently.

I've got a fireplace insert that pretty much does that - she burns very hot, and doesn't use much wood.  My buddy put in a external wood-fired boiler that really only uses primary combustion - he's thinking about re-working it with baffling to get some secondary combustion to work.

I've played around with some coffee canish stoves trying to get a good burn - but haven't gotten around to adding a fan yet.

There's not too many fire setups less effiencient than a BWCAW official fire grate....

You don't just have to burn wood gas - you can actually run combustion engines with it.

Mister_Bubble,

I get the idea behind the wood gas stove, I'm just curious as too whether the Wood-gas stove I referenced is DIFFERENT than the Sierra Zip stove, or are they BOTH using the same principle?
They both have the blower, and the Wood Gas stove has an illustration of how it works. The Sierra Stove doesn't, but the explanation "sounds" the same?
IF the Wood gas stove could cut down on the pot sooting, that would be a big plus as far as I'm concerned.
Maybe the only difference is the NAME :question

Could be, always really wondered about the soot too-that is one of things got me away from wood. Is the Sierra jobby a sooty endeavor or is it better than the typical quick cooking fire and charcoal maker?

I looked at the zz website - with the double walls with ports up near the rim, it looks like the zip is probably a secondary-combustion capable stove.

I don't know how much air flow you really need to get the good secondary combustion going - I'm guessing it isn't all that much, because you can do it without a forced draft.
