Winter Rendezvous - Twin Cities???

All -

This thread picks up where a thread/poll left off: see (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)  Kudos to Old Salt for keeping the idea going since last year's CanoeCopia.  I think this could be fun.

Snow_Dog, Old Salt, & I jointly wish to determine if there would be interest in holding a winter QJ rendezvous somewhere in the vicinity of the Twin Cities.

Our agenda would be to keep it fairly simple: socializing, dinner, and, IF there is enough interest, perhaps informal program of some sort.  The time frame we are looking at would be the latter half of January, 2011.  Most likely we would shoot for a Saturday evening, targeting the 5pm to 7:30pm time frame.  Yes, I AM certain there are those of us who might choose to carry on well beyond this time frame... especially if the appropriate brews are at hand.  We will find a decent restaurant that offers a quiet room where we can meet as a group (establishment suggestions welcomed!).  Hopefully we can set it up in proximity to reasonably-priced lodging for those who might wish to drive into The Cities for the rendezvous.

Anyway, that's the basic idea.  Pretty simple stuff.  There is no intention here to pre-empt/usurp the CanoeCopia 2011 event which will occur a couple months downstream.  We're neither competing with that nor do we wish to replace it on your winter getaway calendar.  Rather, you might actually find carpooling-for-Copia partners OR even future canoe-camping partners by venturing through the snow & joining us in January.  A great many of my paddling party members over the past several years have originated from acquaintances made at off-season QJ events.  We daydreamers seem to enjoy company.

At this point we are mainly looking for INTEREST LEVEL.  So, if you are likely to attend this Twin Cities rendezvous, please respond to this post OR drop a personal note to Snow_Dog, Old Salt or me.  If we determine there is sufficient interest, we'll invest more time & effort into the planning & take a couple more steps (ie. lining up a restaurant & room, determining if there is interest in some sort of program, etc.).

If nothing else, a rendezvous can be an opportunity to swap fishing hole, campsite, routing & equipment information.  Some neat trips get born at these get-togethers.  They serve to feed the canoe-camping hunger many of us feel during the LONG northern hard-water season.

Hey, if you have interest OR questions please post to this thread or drop us a note.  The more, the merrier....

One nice advantage of having this rendezvous in the TC, is the opportunity to shop at all of the great outdoors stores: Cabela's, Gander Mountain, Midwest Mountaineering, REI, etc.

I'd come up from Madison just for the chance to pick up some Surly's at the local provisioner  Smiley

Seriously, I'd be interested in participating, depending on the date.

I'd be interested... We do a Firehall Steak Feed the third Saturday of January so that date is out for me.

Smiley     Perhaps it is a reflection of the post-paddling season doldrums.  Perhaps winter travel in MN is too much of a hassle.  Perhaps 'Copia looms right around the corner.  Perhaps there is simply too much good football on TV in January.

Whatever the reasons, not enough interest has been demonstrated to warrant a Winter Rendezvous in the Twin Cities.  Therefore we shall put the notion to bed for awhile.  Could be we wake it back up again towards the end of hard-water season.

Our thanks go to those of you providing us with feedback!

well; thought the rondivouiox sounded good till I read tis in the cities...ever thought of having one a few hundred miles north closer to the BW/Q  Smiley or is going to the wilderness areas too much close to it :question......reminds me of the yukon jack poem....

The Men That Don't Fit In

There's a race of men that don't fit in,
a race that don't sit still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin,
 And they roam the world at will
They range the field and they rove the flood,
 And they climb the mountains crest;
Theirs is the curse of gypsy blood,
And they don't know how to rest

If they just went straight they might go far;
They are strong and brave and true;
But they're always tired of the things that are,
And they want the strange and new.
They say: "Could I find my proper groove'
 what a deep mark I would make !"
So they chop and change, and each fresh move
Is only a fresh mistake.

And each forgets, as he strips and runs
With a brilliant, fitful pace,
It's the steady, quiet, plodding ones
Who win in the lifelong race.
And  each forgets that his youth has fled,
Forgets his prime is past,
Till he stands one day, witha hope that's dead,
In the glare of truth at last.

He has failed, he has failed; he has missed his chance;
He has just done things by half.
Life's been a jolly good joke on him,
And now is the time to laugh.
Ha, Ha! He is one of the Legion Lost:
He was never ment to win;
He's a rolling stone, and it's breed in the bone;
He's a man who won't fit in.

Smileywell, it's been a good 10 or so years posting and I been enjoying the posts from others I,ve read, but time to move along Smiley

soooo loooong from one of the
"Men who don't fit in"
