I stumbled on a sleeping bag made in the USA and after a little hemming and hawing I bought it. For insulation they use something called 'lamanate', some kind of synthetic stuff. I do know that some very knowledgeable folks only use down, but for me, the idea of useable even if wet is too strong to pass up. Or to put it another way, the more awful the consequences, the more certain I will, sooner or later, do it.
The sleeping bag system I bought is two bags that can be zipped together to provide a really cold weather bag or used alone. Both are mummy in shape and are rated as (outer bag) +35 degrees F., (inner bag)0 degrees, combined together -40 degrees. The whole temperature rating system is, to me, suspect. To be fair, as I age it takes more and more to keep me warm at night. Last night, testing out the zero bag here in my yard (in the tent and on a pad) it got down to 38 and I was almost too warm. No extra long johns, etc. Gad, it was nice.
The bags are well made and have a big serious zipper that seems to able to avoid catching the lining somehow. I got the extra wide and long and am glad I did. If a person likes a bag with all the adjustments and zipper pockets and handwarmers and magic signal ring decoders, then they probably won't like the simplicity of one simple draw string around the hood.
I'm probably being overly dramatic but one of my fears is being zipped into a mummy bag and I need out NOW, like when the bear is tearing his way into the tent. Wiggy's bags use a large zipper and best of all is that when zipped up to the top you still have about an inch of zipper left on one side. So what you do in an emergency is to grab the zipper tab and jerk it up that last bit and the whole zipper comes free and you just pull it apart. It's like when a zipper breaks and freely pulls apart. It will require a little pull to go over the 'bump' that acts to stop the zipper during normal usage.
When you find out it was only a chipmunk doing bear impressions, and need to get back into your bag, you need to pull the tab thing down to the bottom of the zipper and zip it up again.
I'm very glad I bought the bags, but there are some things I need to tell you so you get the full picture. I use those blue plastic barrels, rated at 8 gallons and I can just barely get both bags into one and the lid down and clamped. It is a struggle, actually it will be a good indication to see if the bags loose any loft, I should be able to tell right away. Using my bathroom scales the bags weight in at six pounds. Yah... I know, but you pays your money and you takes your choice.
