Gmap4 online mapping tool

I ran across this in Canadian Canoe Routes, and Gmap4 doesn't seem to have been discussed here before, so hopefully it will be of use to someone.

Briefly, Gmap4 is a free mapping tool with integrated topos and Google Earth photos. It has capabilities for adding routes, GPS tracks and waypoints.

I have just started playing with it, so I apologize to the developer for not having done full justice to the capabilities of his software in that short description. But the interface is quite intuitive, so try it out for yourself and see if you find it a useful tool for canoe trip planning.

Joe,

The developer will probably never see it here anyways, so no worries on what they think, other than they deserve a pat on the back for free mapping. Thanks for posting this, hopefully after the holiday weekend folks can see and take advantage.

I also started playing with it over the weekend, and am impressed.  It even has Canadian topo maps (just added)!  I am having a bit of trouble getting the maps to print the way that I want them to, but haven't worked at it too much yet.

I do like the fact that the maps are vector based, with means they scale up without pixelating.  I also like knowing the flowage direction, but I'd like a way to turn it off ... it is a bit of unnecessary clutter one you know which way the water is moving.

If you plan to use these maps for navigating, I'd do a thorough check with another set of maps.  Just for grins I looked at an area of Quetico where I plan to be traveling soon and noticed that the portage from Brent to William is missing from the Canadian maps.

Joseph (no relation) is in the process of making exactly this change to the code.

I don't want to turn QJ into a gateway to CCR (db seems bummed out enough these days as it is), but here's the ongoing discussion (with a link to a temporary "no arrows" fix):

No more competitor links "for a long time", I promise Cheesy

I figured out how to get the program to show portages overlayed on the map by pointing to the file on Azelea's site:

For some reason the campsite + portage gpx file doesn't seem to work though.  I think it may be the "+" in the file name that is confusing the app.  Perhaps it is something else though.

Anyway,  Gmap4 is a neat and useful app, thanks for pointing it out!

The gmap4 guy contacted me about this and I have chnaged the file name, replacing the "+" with a "-" so it now works with the new file name there.

Also I have put out there a version of the PCD waypoint file in GPX format.  It is as at

This may be a temp thing but it is there now if anyone want to play with it on gmap4.
