WCPP Third Annual Gathering 2013

I am going to be in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park from mid-July to mid August. My route will mostly be on a bushwhacking route I have been laying out from Indian House to Craven Lake on the western edge of the park. I need to find the best way to get from Larus Creek over to Twin Lakes. That 2-3 kilometer is my last obstacle for the route. If I can find a way to wind through the trees and other obstacles I will be very happy.

That is my main objective but would be interested in another "Gathering."My route would be a poor choice for a gathering but I would hang enough supplies so I could travel quickly to the chosen spot.  I am only trying to get the dialogue started. I have other commitments and cannot get up there any earlier.

Hi Marten,
I will be in the park early August, maybe the first two weeks, but have not set a date or what route or for how long. Very flexable being retired. I will watch here for future developments.
Thanks, Robin

Hi Marten,

I'll be in WCPP the first two weeks of August traveling solo, and I'd be interested in meeting some fellow paddlers. Haven't decided on a route, yet.

If we don't do the Bloodvein River,  my canoe partner and I will be in the park the first half of August.  Not sure where, exactly, but we'll be there.

We'll be chasing (among other things) some of the smallies on the western end of the Bloodvein of WCPP (and working east toward Bigshell) in 2nd and 3rd week of June.  If you are in the area, make sure you come by and say HI!  Two solo canoes ... one skin color, one red.  Our campsite flag has a partying flamingo on it ... you can spot it from WAY off.

Farmer and I will be entering WCPP at the Johnson Lake access on July 28. We will be doing a loop and could be at the Glenn Lake campsite where the first solotripping 2011 gathering was held on either Tuesday, July 30 or Tuesday, August 7. I hope to be able to retrace a route from Indian House to Glenn that bushwhacks through Domain Lake.

My wife and I will be putting in at Larus Lake on August 8th.  We're planning a loop around the south western edge of the park then head east through Wrist and Glenn to our take out at Johnson.  I shouldn't imagine that we'd be on Glenn until late in August, maybe the 25th or 26th.  But who knows, if you happen on a black Bell Northstar, it may be us.

Don't know what your planned route might be from Larus ... but I'm sure you are aware that much of the shoreline on Larus (except for portions of shore on the northern half of the lake), all of Murdock, some of Knox and just a bit of Thicketwood were involved in the Red 124 fire 2 seasons ago.

Here is a link to a map showing the burn area (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I was considering going thru Larus/Murdock in June this year, but I'll likely go around.

Much of Murdock is burned but Larus remains largely ok and about all of the established campsites are still ok. I would not detour around these lakes, the spectacle is worth the effort. I would not plan to camp on Murdock however. I went through this area last August.
If interested I can provide more detail when I have my maps in front of me.

Did you do the portages into Thicketwood from Larus?  (I'd only do a quick trip to Murdock anyway to see the picto.)

Actually, from Larus we're headed directly west and south.  We want to make our first camp on Dunstan, spend a couple of days there and then head over to Walking Stick.  I've heard that both of those lakes have great Walleye fishing.  From there we plan to head south through Broken Arrow and down to Mather and then work our way east to Wrist.  Any knowledge about the conditions in those parts?  If anyone has been along that route I'd appreciate anything you can tell me about camp sites, fishing, or any points of interest.

Yes and they were very muddy.

Kerry, It was probably my video that you are getting this information from. Forgive me if we have already talked about this. If you PM me we can talk on the phone. The Dunstan to Walking Stick route is nothing but a bunch of cairns I laid out and is not any semblance of a cleared portage. Storm damage last fall could have left the area impassable. I would not suggest the route unless using a GPS with the "tracks" I have recorded.

Plans for the "Third Annual WCPP Gathering" have been finalized. We will meet on the Glenn Lake campsite we used in 2011: WGS84 15N 389497 5641892 Lat Long 50.9181 94.5722-[url]  . (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) Hogan, Farmer, Marten, Jazzman and son will be there for sure on July 29-30. Anyone else in the area is encouraged to stop in. It is a very spacious site with plenty of tent pads. In the past we have thrown together a buffet for meals made up of what each group has to offer.
