I would add that you should not attempt any route not listed as open without checking with Red Lake Outfitters. Thanks to Harlan at Red Lake Outfitters a lot of route options were ready as the paddling season opened.

I talked to the park office this am, and they mentioned that they had a big storm during the winter that broke a lot of trees. So there will be more blowdown across all areas of the park than you would normally expect.

So Marten, was the Irvine loop pretty rough? The one portage I think out of "Salamander" was a bushwack last year. Both us and Howard Holtman went to the right of the mess and found a better way. But it was still pretty tough.

Yes Ben, The Salamander end was not even evident. I almost chose the route you took as the easiest cutting. To stay on the older and better route took 3 tanks of gas just for that last section. Most of the timber is down so it should not be impacted much anymore with falling trees. It was not storm damage I had to get through but years of accumulation. The Irvine Loop is in the best condition since its inception.

What a twisty long road it has been to WCPP for me. Got a whiff and then got airlifted out........but I'm back up to bat having been mended.

My first step is to get the new map. My second step is try and find out what sort of plans there are for this spring as far as opening routes up.

I have always been rather fascinated by a route from Leano to Irregular via Eagle and the southern border. I was talked out of going to WCPP last year and was glad things worked out the way they did. I thank those of you who cared enough to educate me and had concern......you know who you are.

Is there a way to find out which trails have been cleared and what the plans are for this spring and early summer? I am looking at an August time frame.

The good news is that there is only a short list of places that have not been cleared. The passage to Eagle Lake is one of them. The NE part of the park still needs to be done and Red Lake Outfitters is planning on being there when the ice goes out. The page at the listed link was updated Sept. 6. The portages at the end of last season were in the best overall shape in years and probably since the park was formed. With a start like that for 2014 any problem areas should be taken care of by early season.

Thanks for the heads up Marten. Some folk need to be pointed in the right direction and given a little push to get them going in the right direction (umm, that would be me  Grin )

Should be the best trip ever. Has anyone slid into Piesk Lake east of Knox? I'm always on the lookout for some out of the way place that is not to hard to get to for when I get old and decrepit Wink.......Does Knox have fly in traffic? I might take a peek at that Piesk lake and give it a look for future reference as a base camp destination. Is it pretty? Are there big fishees? How about potential campsites? Inquiring minds want to know.....

MT -

Unless I'm mistaken, Peisk is the lake a former colleague of mine used to do "fly-in" trips each year for walleye fishing.  If so (& I'm pretty sure it is), I've been told the walleye fishing is excellent.  However, my sense of it was there was likely to be even more motorized traffic than you will occasionally see on Knox... which, frankly, wasn't very much when I paddled through there.

My guess is that it is very similar to Knox re: campsites & motorized traffic.

The Internet is a weird critter indeed. I googled peisk lake and a ton of info popped up, including fishing spots. There are two cabins on the lake. Thanks Jimbo, who knows how much time you might have saved me had I become fixated on checking it out.

I liked the easy run up a creek to a lake. Musclow also has my attention. That looks like a nifty troll if the day doesn't blow. The juices are starting to flow.
