I just read "River Stories" by Rob Kesselring.  I recommend it as a primer on how one man and his family somehow escaped the natural consequence of complacency, which is too often disaster.  Somehow the universe conspired to save him from all manner of catastrophe brought on by poor preparation and lack of respect for common safety protocols.
