In a potential bind.......on July 11 I ordered my topo maps for woodland caribou. They still haven't arrived.

Called the supplier and since they are folded they went regular mail instead of parcel......no tracking.

Is there another source on short notice in case they don't show? Does Harlan carry topo maps? Probably can get around with the park map but I would not be especially happy about it.

I'm guessing Harlan can provide you with maps, give him a call.  Do you have a GPS.  I print my maps off my Garmin Basecamp program.

Yes Kerry I have already emailed Harlan.......GPS, nay, just something else to carry. Once in a great while I get overconfident and have to backtrack and once on the big lake across from Argo I became stumped and had to break out a compass. I have the Garmin base camp.......I hadn't much thought of printing the maps myself. Waterproof paper? Where do you get it?

Speaking of GPS I picked up a garmin Montana a few years back and added a very cool soft sided case that came complete with a Ram mount. The Montana has a nice big screen and is touch screen operated. I picked it up in anticipation of an epic Everglades trip which has some very tricky navigational challenges indeed. But alas, reality has a way of dashing the best laid plans (I was even packed)........maybe this winter.

Thanks for the reminder... Just went to Mytopo.com and ordered a couple maps. The beauty there is I can custom order maps by having a map made of the area I'm going. Eliminates extra maps... I get the folded map in waterproof. Give it a try!

I see my order shipped within an hour of me placing it. They say up to 9 days. But I'll bet they'll be in my mailbox long before I get home Wednesday. I can't wait to see how DD's maps look. When it comes to maps... he's the man!

Yes DD is certainly the map man. I'm just like him except without any technical abilities (which of course would also make me nothing like him  Wink ).........I do like my maps though, I suppose I should wise up and print my own. Now I'm between a rock and a hard place......didn't show today either.

Ben, I went on mytopo and didn't get much progress. I wonder if doing the work on an I-pad put me at some sort of disadvantage? Things did not go very smoothly, probably just me.

Harlan has gotten back with me and indicated he has every map for the park I could want. Plan B seems solid if these don't show......probably should of asked him first.

I like the idea of UTM grid and have always wanted to practice plotting my position via GPS coordinates. But with no GPS this trip I will be just lugging a bunch of extra paper.   Tongue

Not sure if you have the new park map but it will save you some headaches. Their are enough new portages and rerouted portages that it is a must. Things are always being improved and some swampy portages are relocated. If heading from Douglas to Indian House check with Harlan as one of the bad ones has been moved. This new portage is not on the new map.

Geez......expensive set of maps for sure.

Ordered them July 11 and they arrive on the 30th the very day I left for Minneapolis. I had to choke on the overnight delivery price. Ouch! Better start learning to print my own I guess.

I will send up a smoke signal when I get back...3 puffs of smoke in a row means I popped a 50 incher.

The monster under the bed.......what if you look and its actually there? Part of me is thrilled by the prospect of a 50 inch fish in a little boat.....part of me is a bit wild eyed at the whole concept. I certainly have done my homework....done the requisite research and acquired the recommended outfits and lures. Being attached to a big fish with 100 lb power pro means quite a bit of physics involved.......the line is not breaking, even if I want it to. I guess I will worry about catching the thing later. First I have to hook one......big unfamiliar body of water pursuing a fish that I don't know very well. If all works as planned I should have at least a week to beat the water to a froth......maybe a few day trips to other bodies of water since I have an insatiable desire to see what's over the next hill.
