The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival by John Valliant is one of the most amazing books I have ever read.  It is non-fiction but reads like a murder mystery.  It takes place in the Primorye province of far eastern Russia, a wilderness region unlike any in the world.  For one thing, it is the only place where tigers roam outside of the tropics.  Amur Tigers (improperly called Siberian Tigers) are, by far, the largest of Panthera Tigris Altaica and this is the story of one that went rogue and those that hunted it.  It is a story that takes you into the mind of a tiger and its staggering intelligence.  But it is also a story about this very isolated region of Russia and the aboriginal peoples that are still there but who, like the Cree of northern Canada, have been reduced both in number and their own sense of themselves.  This was one of those books that I couldn’t put down – not only an amazing story but extremely well written.  Highly, highly recommended.
