Alaska is on several bucket lists around here. I will share some ways to make that happen without breaking the bank. Mark your calendars and plan now to attend. Free admission for all.

I will be presenting two Alaska seminars at the upcoming Spring Expo, April 24-26 at Midwest Mountaineering. Time and location TBD.

"DIY! Alaska Travel On the Cheap" will give you the basics for travel to and around the Last Frontier. Fly? Drive? Alaska Ferry? Learn how to save $100's and see and experience more than the package tours.

"DIY! Alaska Fishing On the Cheap" will help you experience the best fishing on the planet. Freshwater? Salt? Salmon? Trout? Halibut? Lingcod? Rockfish? I'll give you the basics for fishing Alaska on a budget.

OS,

I would love to be there for you presentation, but it's not in the cards.  I took our Scout troop up there in '11 and our fishing experience was pretty much a bust coming down the Copper River.  We 'caught' some post spawn pinks off the bay shore in Valdez.   Tongue - like eating wet cardboard.  We're planning another trip in '16 or '17 and want to do a tad better on the fishing.  Do you have a slide deck (soft copy, preferably) I could get from you, maybe at 'Copia this year?  Your other tips on travel, cost savings, etc. would also be most appreciated.  Thanks.

Alas, OS, I'll be jetting off to Utah on April 24th as my wife and I will be exploring Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Sorry to miss your presentations.

But Denali is on our bucket list, so I will likely pick your brain on that little adventure. Maybe over some BBQ...  Wink

OS.......I have several good friends who are planning an Alaska adventure of sorts. One was a salmon fishing guide in AK for a few years but the other two have never been. Not sure of their exact plans but renting a motor home to base out of is part of the equation.

Question.......Is your presentation going to be videoed? And if so will it be posted publicly? I have a strong hunch that you might be able to pass something onto them of value.

I appreciate the encouragement, but I'm not planning to video my presentation. If they have specific questions, I would try to answer them.

Driving a motorhome to Alaska is very expensive.

I think the plan is to rent one when they get there. Still probably a bit pricey. None of them are married and spend their dough on hunting/fishing trips. They went to Africa last year and had to drop some major bucks for anything they shot. Sounded a little expensive to me and the plane ride was not fun........I was glad I didn't go.

Why not video your presentation and post it on Utube? Easy enough. I would very much like to watch it and I have no Alaska plans. Probably would help lots of folks Thumbs Upup

The short answer as to why I don't video and post this presentation is that no one would need to come to my presentations to hear me. That may sound a little selfish, but the reason anyone books me is to draw folks to the larger show and hopefully spend money.

Another reason, is that the travel industry is constantly changing and adapting. Some of the money saving tips I shared last fall are no longer true and I am updating my material to show current tips to save money.I anticipate continuous revisions as long as I share this presentation.

If you want to hear some great budget friendly tips for traveling and fishing Alaska, you should plan to come to this great event

Rich  Cool.

The presenters schedule was just announced today. It can be found at:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) .

Both of my presentations are on Saturday, April 25.

I will be speaking on Alaska Fishing at 11:45am in room #102 Hanson Hall. I will share some basic Alaska fishing tackle and techniques, along with money saving tips.

At 4:45pm, I will be speaking on Alaska Travel On the Cheap in room 102, Hanson Hall. This will focus on various ways to travel to and around Alaska. Many budget friendly tips will be shared.

I hope Alaska is on your bucket list. Follow these tips to leave some cash in your bucket. Cool

Come early for some Alaskan fun and to get a good seat. Last fall these were standing room only.

If you plan to be there, let me know. I like to do coffee or BBQ with fellow QJers. I will be there most of the day on Saturday. Cool

I'll be wearing an orange fishing shirt and Alaskan cap.

OS, Where is Hanson Hall? I confess that I've never attended any presentations (of anyone's) during the Midwest event. Would love to sit in on the Alaska presentation -- I'm assuming what you will share would also apply to a Yukon-based adventure? Just curious.

Nanda and others,
Hanson Hall is part of the U of M campus. It is located behind MM between Riverside Av and 4th St. The best parking option is the 4th St ramp.

There is actually a good map on the website.

I'm not sure what you are planning for the Yukon so it's hard to say how much is applicable. If you want to send me a PM, I'll try to give you a better idea.

I'll look forward to seeing you. Perhaps we can do lunch. Cool

This years speakers lineup was one of the best I've seen. Really catered to canoeists. After the 'kayakacopia' comments I've seen, this one has earned our support. The Fall Expo dates are November 20-22. Cool
