WCPP in August or Sept.

I think I originally posted this in trip planning and buried inside another post. I was going into WCPP - Leano in June however things shifted on the home front and I couldn't do that trip at that time. Sound familiar? So, I gauged my odds for doing it in August and felt that they were more solid. I may be only going in via Onnie or Johnson with a goal of reaching the Hat, Wrist and the Aegeans and back out.

Several of you have offered some great advice on routes, campsites and fishing (thanks Kerry Smiley so I'm grateful. I'm still hopeful that I can pull this one off this year. With that thinking, I'm considering September even though heading that far north at that time of year seems a bit chancey with the weather. However it will give me another option if August doesn't work out.

I'll post if/when plans change. Let me know if anyone is thinking of being in the park then and/or in that area at that time.

A trip in September is still very enjoyable. Just have to adjust to shorter daylight and cooler evenings and fresh dew in the mornings. Warm sleepwear may need to be added to your pack.  You may find some colours appear in the woods and fishing for lake trout becomes easier.
We have a few groups paddling and camping in the park this month. I myself will be going in soon for 4 days for a quick project. Our biologist crew is flying out today for a week to assess caribou habitat in the recent burn as well as evaluate some campsites found within the burn.
There's still blueberries along some trails.  At this time, moose are moving along in search and beavers are busy beefing up their feedbeds.

Do you have updates on the condition of the portages and camp sites in the burn area?  The Leano entry is on our to do list for some year in the not to distant future.

I never made it as far as Leano last summer but it's on my radar again for this upcoming summer. I'm curious as well on the routes through the burn areas but also on the status of the road south of the Onnie entry. That was as far as I made it last summer.

Hey folks... I see that trip planning is underway for your next canoeing adventure.  As you know, a good portion of the park landscape was altered last summer by a wildfire.  It will be a while before our crews manage to visit all of the routes within the burn and assess degree of impact.  Some areas were visited last summer and observations were shared on WCPP message board at Canoeing.com...  our "go-to" page for providing updates.   We finally acquired Landsat photos that will help with the task of mapping out impacted areas.  Condition of roads leading to access points, condition of trails, water level, etc.... is all shared on the WCPP message board as soon as information becomes known to us at the office.   The park information guide has just been printed and contains lots of interesting information and tidbits that could prove helpful as you lay out your route.  Send us an e-mail message at woodland.caribou.mnr@ontario.ca to have a copy mailed out to you.   We are looking forward to hearing from you.
