Looking for first hand knowledge or opinions on Wenonah Voyager canoes.  There is one for sale locally on Craigs List.  2014 ultralight model.  Owner claims 33 lbs. at 17' 6" and nearly new condition.  Thanks for the help.

I have not paddled Voyager personally but I do own a Northstar Magic that is 16' long. I have paddled the Wenonah "Advantage" it is fast but a little stubborn to turn. The Voyager is very good for larger paddlers I was told when I was looking into buying mine. I am 5'9" and a 16 footer fits me very well.

Fast straight tracking canoe. Lively hull but solid when underway. A lot of free board, likes to carry big loads. Catches wind- best for big loads and big people.

Can you test paddle it? I would ask to do so.

Ditto Solus, I had one since 2001 when they first came out. I'm comfortable in racing canoes and go 180#. If you're confident with it, you'd be surprised how well it handles rough water, I'm just grinning in that stuff. But it'll catch the wind so you need to have your trim right. It's a lot of boat in tight upstream paddling but I can lean it very hard. I think you'd have to consider yourself an advanced paddler to really like it in all conditions otherwise count on staying on shore more days than you might in other solos.

Northwood Solo looks great but good luck finding a used one.

P. S. If it's the right price you can always try it and resell it if it doesn't work out.

I appreciate all of the replies.  I clearly do NOT consider myself an advanced paddler.  I was hoping for something more like, "Even a rank amateur  can paddle on of these babies in some knarly water?   I suppose that why I buy lottery tickets now and then.  Wishful thinking.

Kind Regards,

The Voyager, Northwood Solo and Magic are all very different boats.  The Voyager is 17'6" long - a huge solo boat.  It's designed to carry a big load on open water.  It has zero rocker, which means it's very hard to turn unless you lean it on its ear.  If you want a straight-tracking freighter, it could be your boat.  If you want a solo that you can use in smaller water, look for a boat with a bit of rocker and at least a foot shorter.

Mossback,

You and I are about the same size, though I might have you by about 20 pounds (maybe more... Roll Eyes) The Northwind Solo would be a good choice, but keep your eyes peeled for a Bell Merlin II or Wenonah Prism.  The Prism is a tad longer at 16'6".  I picked up a used Merlin II a couple years back and it rocks - at 15' long, 27" gunnel width and a bit of rocker on either end, it tracks well and is easily healed, very stable secondary.  I think you'd be very happy with it.  It spawned the Northwind Solo - basically the Merlin II plus 6"...it's got good heritage.  Good luck with the hunt.
