Hi

New guy here. Just posted a profile.

I will be in the Gunflint Trail area mid-June to mid-July 2018. Will be in Ely mid-July to approximately November 1st.

I have a very flexible schedule and will be making multiple trips in the BWCA and Quetico areas. Prefer to go with someone. New to the area, definitely not new to the outdoors or paddling.

Don't overlook checking out small tandems you can solo too. If you can have just one canoe and you might want to bring a friend, a 16' tandem will do double duty.
Not as fast as a true solo, but the tradeoff in stability and load capacity might be worth it for you?

I agree with ST's advice.  Also, highly recommend you actually "test-drive" before buying.

I didn't do that but got lucky.  While there are certain aspects re: handling my Prism that I need to exercise care on, I was very pleasantly surprised how well it does "upwind."  Research hadn't told me that, either way.

When you're in Ely, the Piragis guys will let you test paddle anything they have 'on the lot' - a good opportunity to compare boats.  If you pass through Madison, WI, the good folks at Rutabaga will do the same.  Both are close enough to paddling water.

QJ is a fantastic place to ask all kinds of questions about trips, partners, etc.  But ... if you're a Facebook user, you might check out the page titled "BWCA Trip Partners."  I don't know if it has, or will, get anyone together, but I maintain it just in case.  And if I'm ever looking for a partner (the truth comes out at last).

Welcome to the site and this community of paddlers as well! I will be up in that area around those times. I'll post here when the time gets near. A fair number of my trips go up to QPP from there but I also do a couple BW trips as my work allows.

I use a Bell Northwind Solo for these trips but I also have a SR 17 for group trips.

This site is a wealth of information. Enjoy digging around!

My schedule is now Ely from June 19 to November 1st....  and I am still looking to spend as much time on the water as possible.
