Fishing Information

In 2017 I took a two week solo trip from Irvine to Royd with a side trip to Gammon.  While I knew what fish spieces of fish were in the "named" lakes, such as Irvine/Royd/Gammon, etc., I didn't do my homework and find out what spieces of fish were in the "no name" lakes in between.   While I ended up having excellent walleye fishing in the lakes I stayed on it would have been nice to know beforehand what types of fish were in the lakes.
This year two of us are going on a three week trip starting Aug. 21 on Moose lake and ending on either Lighting or Irvine, depending where the spirits so move us.  Goals are to base camp two to four days, explore and walleye fish to our hearts content.
So all that being said, here's what I'd like to do on this thread.  I'll start by mentioning a lake, such as Moose Lake and then gather information from any of you out there with knowledge of what types of fish are in the lake and what you think the quality of fishing is, be it walleyes, northerns or lake trout.  Because a lot of the lakes have no name, we'll take our proposed route and go lake to lake (side trip lakes as well), working off the the park map and/or topos.
This process will take some time so if you're willing, let's grab some maps and get started.
Thanks......Mike

There is a Woodland Caribou Park Signature Site publication, dated 2004, which contains "fish productivity" maps.  For instance, there is a band of lakes straddling the Bloodvein (east/west) which show as predominantly walleye/northern lakes.  There are some minor exceptions.  Likewise, it shows a parallel band of lakes just further south running east/west that show as lake trout/walleye/northern.  South of that, even, there is a patch of lakes showing as primarily lake trout/northern pike lakes.  It also shows lakes where muskies & bass are present.  In addition, there is a "lake productivity" map, showing the estimated kilograms of fish present per hectare of lake per year.  To the extent that map is accurate, it should provide relative productivity of lakes by fish type.

I seem to recall this same information posted on-line somewhere but I can't seem to find it just now.

We did Irvine/Royd/Gammon a few years back.  Seems to me that Marten & one of his paddling buddies have some experience fishing Lighting (& probably everywhere else on your list!).  I'm not sure I've been to Moose.  Irvine is primarily walleye & northern... with an emphasis on BIG northern!  Royd is an excellent lake trout lake but the guys with me did well walleyes on the west end & over on Kennedy, etc..

Wish I had more info to share....

Thanks Jimbo.  I did meet with Marten a few weeks back and went through some of the lakes we'll be on.  I didn't know what to expect for replies because there's not a lot of folks who get into Moose, Twin, etc.  I'm also real curious as to the lakes on the 'travel routes' located between 'destination lakes' such as the long narrow lake going s/e out of Ugly towards Royd.  Plan on exploring that area a little instead of just paddling through it.  I was going to work my way down there on this forum .
Thanks again.....Mike

Claire (Park office) and Harlan (Red Lake Outfitters) would be two other sources of great information. Harlan has even developed his own Park maps. Along with Marten, if they don’t know, probably no one knows. Cool

Thanks Salt.   I met with Marten a couple of weeks ago and went over our route.  Harlan sent me the info he had. I posted on BWCA site as well.   I don't expect to get much feedback on some of these 'off the path' lakes but thought, what the heck....maybe someone other than Marten, Harlan or Claire have been there.  I'll keep going along the route and see if I get any feedback.
Thanks again......Mike

OK, back from vacation and some 'timber time' to quote Bob B.

Moving along our route.....I know there's walleyes/northerns in Dunstan (we plan on staying there for some number of days) and Wanda (should we make a side trip there).

Has anyone fished the long, narrow stretch of water between Ugly and Royd?  I think we're going to take a few days to explore this stretch along with some of the back bays and maybe bushwhack into a few of the smaller lakes nearby.

.......Mike

Post up on myccr (Canadian Canoe Routes) under the Ontario section. Someone on there should be able to respond -- it's worth a try anyway.
