Sounds to be about the same deal as offered by Steve & Evie.

Those canoes are heaviest Royalex I've ever carried. That solo was in rough shape several years ago when MagicPaddler tried to use it.  He had to return to base after a mile or so because of the really bad leak and trade it in for a heavier tandem.  Maybe it's fixed by now?

Despite those less-than-desirable vessels, I'm glad they have elected to keep up with the canoe outfitting.  Prior management was reluctant to expand, in large part due to trying to maintain "status quo" with the nearby First Nation folks whose attitude towards canoeists is, apparently, problematic.  Maybe that can be improved?

Opasquia has a lot to offer and I'd certainly like to get back up there.  About the only reasonably-priced option to do so is through Big Hook.

An update on the canoes supplied by Big Hook in Opasquia.

I attended the All Canada Show in Green Bay last night and spoke with Ryan the owner of Big Hook.  Ryan indicated that he had replaced one of the Roylex canoes with an aluminum canoe.

Starting to kick the tires on a three week trip up there in 2020.  Looking forward to talking to you guys about that at CI&S on Friday and Saturday.

MP.....I'm just starting to research the trip, looking like 2020 as I'm already planning WCPP again this year with a few family members.
I'll be talking to you guys more about it as we go along.

Although Jimbo did all the carrying, 80 pounds sounds about right.  I’d say the one that Jimbo and I used had been torqued a bit because regardless of how we loaded it, it wouldn’t track straight.

“Portages” were mostly relatively short, but crude (where they existed).  Many were marked by roller logs laid across the path ... used by First Nation travelers to drag their aluminum boats across.

Yeah,"80 pounds or so" sounds about right.  They were every bit that heavy!  Also, I had forgotten about the poor "tracking" until DD mentioned it.  Still, the cost of bringing your own canoe is probably prohibitive.

Like Magic, I can definitely see myself heading back up there.  It is a TRULY "remote" and wild place.  Also, you can't beat the fishing we found on some lakes.  On the other hand, be prepared to deal with contrary winds and skeeters.  You'll find BOTH, in abundance!

Check out Crown Land maps and Topographic maps.
Agree to terms and type in the name and you get something like the Paddle Planner map.
