Details are being planned for our annual Saturday dinner. We will post them when they are finalized. Much like in past years.  Cool

On Friday, we will have a ‘Paddlers Rendezvous’ beginning at 3:00 pm. Pizzas, beers, pop, (regular & diet) and water will be available. Cost is $5 for the room + whatever you order. Please bring cash. If you can read this, you’re invited.  Cool

Don’t delay in booking your room. It’s filling up. We hope to see you there! Cool

We now have a plan! Many thanks to MuleLars and Wally 13 for their assistance and wisdom in putting this together! Cool

All activities will take place in the meeting room of the Country Inn & Suites, 400 River PL, Menona, just a short distance from Copia. As you enter the main entrance, you will see the desk. Look to the right, just beyond the breakfast room, to see the meeting room. We will have a banner and sign to let you know you have found us. Just come on in and join the fun. We will have name badges available.

Friday will be a 'Paddlers Rendezvous'. Everyone is invited. We will begin about 3pm and be there until about 10pm or so. It is come & go or come & stay depending on your plans. We will have complimentary beverages including coffee, craft beer, pop (reg & diet), & water. This can be a good opportunity for trip planning (bring your maps), and talking about previous trips and plans. We are asking for a $5 donation to cover room rental. We will have a donation can for that purpose. It is on the 'honor' system.

Along about 6pm, we will poll those present for a pizza order. Pizza will come from Falbo's, as in the past. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) This will continue periodically through the evening. Please bring cash! Cool

Saturday evening will feature our annual QJ Dinner. We will begin gathering about 5pm, with dinner arriving shortly after 6pm. We are catering in BBQ from award winning Smoky Jon's BBQ, the best in Madtown. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) We may likely have chopped pork, chopped beef brisket, ribs, and smoked turkey, along with baked beans and coleslaw. The exact choices may depend on the number signed up. You can signup by posting here with the number you are bringing. Spouses are always welcome! The cost for the meal and room is $20. for which we will have a separate donation can. Please feel free to invite others. Please bring cash. Cool

If you plan to join us on Saturday, but are NOT eating dinner, we are asking $5. to cover the room. Cool

MuleLars, Wally 13, portage dog, and Old Salt are providing the complimentary beverages. If you will indicate which nights you will be there, it will help them to estimate quantities.

We hope you will plan to join us! Many say that these annual gatherings are a main reason they come to Copia. You may  learn more here than at the show. Cool

The above mentioned donations are only to reimburse actual expenses. Cool

I will be there both evenings as well, but not for the BBQ as I will be breaking bread with friends from Ely for dinner on Saturday.

I have no conflicts this year, so I will be on hand.

And to be transparent on cost, the room is $100 per night, plus tax. We can be fluid on the contributions, depending on how many folks turn out.

And to be further transparent, other folks can come, even without a lot of advanced notice. The pizza just gets ordered by people who are interested, and we can add to the Smoky Jon's order early Saturday afternoon for Saturday night, if we find out more than expected are going to come.

We want all to feel welcome!!

Looking forward to seeing everyone again!

The suggested donations are based on previous years attendance averages. As MuleLars has pointed out, he has committed to $200 + tax for the room. We don’t want to leave him short. Donate whatever you think is fair.

Let’s keep the focus on having fun together. Cool

I just booked a room at the Country Inn for just Sat. night.  I'll do the show Sat and Sun.  See you there!

BTW, I got the Rutabaga Canoecopia discount for 109.00  I cancelled my $83. room at the Mayflower for the convenience of not having to drive back and forth to the Sat. dinner.

If you have ideas/suggestions for future QJ gatherings or dinners, this is a good place to make them. In the past, we have gathered at a restaurant, and could possibly return to that. It seems like the going rate for a meeting room in Madison is about $100. Or we could meet as a party of ____ and order off the menu Dutch treat. Thoughts?? Cool

As of now, we have eight signed up.

I enjoyed the format last year as it gave me a chance to talk with some folks in a smaller, quieter setting.  It's also nice for going over maps as there's some room to move around.

"ALLLL aboard"......the Polar Vortex!   It was so cold here last night that I noticed the town "flasher" was handing out pictures Wink

TomT,

If somebody wakes him up, I expect we'll hear him answer in the "affirmative."  Magic has to get all the sleep he can between paddling seasons.  The boy is out on the water "on the go" almost the entire season!  I'm sure 2019 will be no different.

He's just "resting" right now....

I can certainly understand the ‘hibernation’ thoughts, given our current subarctic temps. Shocked
I suspect he is waiting for a generous QJer to pick up his tab? Cool

I'm about 51% a go at this point. Not that anyone is tracking it. Travel plans may be shifting. It would mean a late night arrival on Fri and stay until early Sun AM.

I called the motel and was told that it’s probably ok, but they advise that Bob call the motel and speak with the GM to be sure. The number is: 608-221-0055. They may have questions about the dog.

Whatever they say is good with us. Cool

What time Friday does the Bull Session typically start?

Looking forward to seeing everyone again.

I will be there for Saturday/Sunday for sure and I'll be in on dinner for Saturday night. Friday night is still uncertain depending on how some things shake out for work and non-work commitments.

Might drive over Friday with Old_Salt or might be coming later on my own on Friday night, or might not be able to leave for Mad-Town until dark-thirty on Saturday morning.  If anyone is coming from Twin Cities or Rochester on Friday after work or early Saturday AM and wants to share a ride, let me know. Depending on when I leave, we might be able to do so.

Ok, here is the list as I have it. There is still time to sign up & get on the list. We just need an accurate count for food & QJ Birthday cake. The names with question marks (?) are not because of the questionable characters who inhabit QJ, but because we don't have a definite answer. We will NOT order food for them unless they commit to the dinner. Our budget is non-existent. We hope everyone can attend! Cool Please bring cash. Wink

1) Old Salt.
2) Marten.
3) M Peebles.
4) Jimbo.
5) Wally 13.
6) Denton Doc.
7) MuleLars.
8) Tom T.
9) Magic Paddler x2
10) Pine Knot.
11) Snowdog.
12) Bob B + therapy dog
13) Jazzman
14) Quentin

The following need to let us know you are planning to attend. We want to include you! Cool

1) High n Dry?
2) Solotrip 4 ?

Anyone else? You can still sign up at the Friday Paddlers Rendezvous! Cool Thanks! Travel safe! Wink

It is possible that we will drop by on Friday night to say hello.  I am sorry to miss the cake (I love cake! and I also love birthday celebrations!) but we will be going to the BWCA.com dinner and I'm pretty sure you will eat it all up before we would get there after that.  Have a wonderful celebration.  We will hope to see most of you at some time or another during the three days.

We hope to see you on Friday! Are you bringing your granddaughter? Travel safe  Wink

Um, I’m stretching it even coming at all. I’ll be heading home Saturday afternoon. I have a special someone coming for the summer to help me out a bit and need to be home early Sunday. So only Friday pizza for me.... I’d pitch in for your party and anything for QJ... but I cannot be there Saturday night. Sorry Rich...

Looking forward to seeing all you guys again.

Wink

In answer to your question, Old Salt, we are not bringing Anna this year.  She is competing in the Illinois Regional Science Olympiad on that day.  We are glad that she qualified for Regionals, but disappointed that she can't come, too.

I was not going to be able to make dinner Saturday, but I was very much looking forward to the bull session at the hotel Saturday.   At the last minute my plans went completely to hell and I will not make it to the show at all.

A few minutes ago I cancelled a room at the Country Inn and Suites, with 2 queen beds.  If anyone needs it, let them know.

Kind Regards to everyone.  Sure wish I was in the crowd tomorrow.

I had a slight accident which has raised concerns if I may have messed up recent surgery repairs. I helped bring home a new to us fire truck and was climbing on it to check some things out. Still having ice on it from the trip I slipped and PLEASE I wish to keep this quiet. My kids and sisters would/ will roast me. And I’m already feeling roasted if you know what I mean. I’m hoping my “replacement “ will also take my spot for tonight. I’ll find out more on my condition today I hope. Enjoy your time together... your a great bunch.

Ben,

We’re sorry to hear you won’t make it to Copia festivities. Sorry about the knee. An X-ray will confirm or deny any lasting damage. My non-Dr suggestion is ice, elevation, and rest. As one who has had knee replacement the new knee is a lot tougher than the old knee. I’ve given mine some pretty serious blows and it keeps on ticking. Take care my friend! Hang in there! Cool

All -

Alas, with my limited skills, I was unsuccessful in attaching mpeebles' video of the QJ Choir's rendition of "Happy Birthday." Therefore, I have forwarded this (highly questionable) endeavor to our resident QJ "IT specialist" for possible handling.  While I wouldn't be surprised if our specialist succeeds in posting the video, even with his remarkable talents he will not be able to (nor SHOULD he even try) to "save" that audio.  Please Wayne, for the sake of posterity, do us a big favor & put the sound track out of its misery!  Boy, do we suck!

Anyhow, I do have a few pics of the event I hope to attach.  It was well-attended and we had a great time!

I may be limited in how many I can attach per post (2?).  Here goes....

Be well Ben. I missed seeing you at the dinner but it's better that you were home resting up. I can however attest to the healing powers of laughter as I never laughed so much as I did last night. There were some great stories --- and humorous. See you next year but I hope we can meet up at a late winter season/early spring wing nite!

I had a great time as well!  Thanks to all for the advice and tips.  I didn't know that they had coyotes in Madison but I swore that I heard some howling outside when we were singing happy birthday.   I also noticed that Jake hid under a chair during the same.  Besides paddling/exploring/fishing it seems that we have something else in common.....bad voices.  Except of course, dd.  Crap, I hope it's not contagious.  Better get checked out dd. Sure, I'll self-identify.

I was the guy behind the camera.

PS  Here's an update.  Our IT/media expert is, in fact, "challenged" by trying to post the video.  He's on it, though, and, if anyone can pull it off, HE can.  FAIR WARNING, however: the "audio" portion is best utilized when trying to drive off unwanted in-laws.  It really ought to do the trick.

Of course, there were some who came and went on both nights. I didn’t try to do a headcount but my guess is about 20 each night. About a dozen or so attended both nights. Cool Two or three are new to QJ. We look forward to getting better acquainted with them. Cool One of the new guys told me how glad he was to find us. I told him that I was hoping to know him better. Several told me that the weekend was too short. I thought so too. We have an awesome group here. Cool

I regret that the Spartans, Arnesr & his son, and a few other attendees were not captured on camera when picture-taking time rolled around. They certainly figured into the good time everyone had.  Arnesr, your son is the most mad-dog young fisherman I've met in a long time!  He'll carry his torch for sport-fishing to his grave, I'm thinking!  The kid is a "sponge" for anything to do with angling (alternative lure presentations, gear, etc.).  Holy mackerel!

I extend my apologies where "wrong names" may be associated with the pics ST has posted.  The fault is entirely mine & merely reflects the fact that I didn't get around as much as I would have liked and become better acquainted with folks I didn't know so well.  Also, in some cases, the crowded room as well as the angle and distance of the shot made it difficult to say, with certainty, who exactly is shown in certain pics.  Please feel free to "correct the record" where I may have screwed up. My purpose was to provide ST with a "quick & dirty pairing of faces with names he would know." I didn't really have building THE definitive record of all attendees when I sent him the note.

You get engaged in conversations and, before you know it, an entire evening has slipped by and you haven't really spent time with some of the very guys (and gals) you had most intended to see.  Nor have you met all the folks who happen to be "new" to you.  Hopefully, you do better next year.  That's just the way it is; I remember thinking the same thing the last time I was there.  You know how it is with old dogs....

Just as others have said, my weekend highlights mostly come from our evening get-togethers.  I attended Copia only through early afternoon on Saturday.  I bought 5 freeze-dried meals, one waterproof pouch to store my navigation electronics (my big ticket item this year at $20), and I attended one seminar (Stu vs. Rob Kesselring).  When my legs started aching from walking around on that hard-ass floor, I decided it was "nap time" (increasingly my favorite time of day as I get older) and retired until evening festivities resumed.  That's about "par" for the Copia course, for me.

MuleLars, Wally13, Old Salt and, their new "right-hand man" & ace-reporter/film maker, mpeebles, are to be congratulated for getting everything set-up and organized.  It was a good time.  Thank you!

I will post three photos that I took during Old Salt's "Alaska DYI Paddling" Presentation on Saturday.  Because of the size limitation, it will be three separate posts.  I don't know how to do it another other way.

I sure enjoyed visiting with so many of you again.  It makes it hard waiting for the water to turn liquid again.  I am thankful for the opportunity to bring my dog Jake along.  It was an excellent experience for him and I both.  Man he was tuckered out on the way home Saturday.  My favorite part of the show is visiting with you guys.

Bob.

My son and I enjoyed the Friday evening gathering and those we were able to meet.  We regret not being able to stay for part of the Saturday gathering before heading home.  We left right after the Aluminum Chef competition and driving home looked like flying the Millennium Falcon at light speed, lots of blowing snow coming at us, though we made it home safe.

I only purchased a couple of maps at the show.  We mainly talked to a few vendors and attended presentations throughout the day.   I enjoyed Bryan Hansen's seascape photography presentation and hopefully will remember to use some of his tips in the future.  It was also nice to see Jim Baird(History Channel-Alone winner) back doing presentations again this year after his first appearance last year, he does a nice job presenting.  We saw Cliff Jacobsen and Kevin Callan and a few regulars as well, and though I may not have learned anything I had not already seen in one of their other presentations, it's always entertaining listening to them tell their stories.

I noticed that Ontario did not send a representative for the second year in a row.  It was a pleasure to visit with Quetico superintendent Trevor Gibb in years past, and I had hoped their booth would return this year.   It's also nice to be able to purchase an overview map of the park that it seems no one else sells at the event.  Hopefully they will make a return next year if budgets will allow.

The evening get together is without a doubt the most valuable part of the show for me as I learn about great fishing spots, presentations and campsites I need to check out, as well as share some great stories.  Thanks MuleLars, Wally13, Old Salt & mpeebles for putting it together!

Hi guys! As far as the "League of Singing Impaired" goes, that was pretty darn good!

You should hear my wife's side of the family singing happy b-day. Uff-da. Then again, there was a time her favorite response to the "Where's Dave?" question was "I don't know, probably at some hotel with some guy he met on the internet again."

Thank you all for inviting me in to participate in both dinners at Canoecopia this year.  I appreciated the conversation, food, and opportunity to meet you.  There was a lot of canoe tripping wisdom in that room.  And I was inspired at the types of trips many of you are doing - age not an issue.

Yes TomT.  I was there on both Friday and Saturday nights.  And while I do not think I am young (my knees and need for a lot more sleep than I used to tell me that), at 48 I probably was the youngest guy in the room.
